‘India Fantastique’ debuts at Sotheby’s

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on September 8, 2012

‘INDIA FANTASTIQUE’ MAKES ITS INTERNATIONAL DEBUT AT SOTHEBY’S, LONDON

The book ‘India Fantastique’ premiered at an exclusive, by invitation only, event at Sotheby’s, London. Dame Judi Dench and Mr. Amitabh Bachchan were the ‘Guests of Honours’ who released the book at this much anticipated evening.

Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla have dressed Hollywood stars of the calibre of Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Freida Pinto and Sophie Marceau. The designer duo is known for their their creation and interior designing in India as well as internationally.

The two met by chance in 1986. Abu was born in Mumbai and started out as a costume designer in the film industry. Sandeep was born in Kapurthala, Punjab and started out in the family leather business. The decision to work together was taken instantly and their first collection, ‘Mata Hari’, arrived just four months later. Their mission………to create the finest. A seemingly impossible dream. Neither possessed any formal qualifications, neither had money to invest. What they did have in abundance was raw talent and an unswerving belief in their own creativity.

Classical Elegance is their signature style. The finest fabrics, impossibly fine hand-embroidery, delicate embellishments and flawless finishing are their hallmarks. They are known as the Masters of Revival and Reinvention, taking ancient techniques and craftsmanship and elevating it to standards never seen before. Chikankari, Zardozi, Tharad, Mirrorwork are just some of the old that they have now made new.

The first volume of India Fantastique displays dozens of the duo’s impossibly elegant designs created over the past 25 years, including close- ups of exquisitely crafted details. The second volume focuses on their extensive work in interior design. Their hallmark maximalism runs riot in privately commissioned interiors, which incorporate art, artifacts, antiques and vintage textiles.

Dame Judi Dench spoke about the designer duo, “I first noticed Sophie Marceau wearing an Abu Sandeep creation on the sets of the Bond movie  ‘The World is Not Enough’. When i asked Lindy Hemming  who was the costume designer for the movie, she put me in touch with the boys and the association has continued to date I am happy to say.”

“They walked into my house one morning, years ago,a shy smile on their faces and a world of expectation in their eyes. Jaya introduced them to me as Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, young men stepping into the world of couture, in the city of opportunity – Mumbai. They were very talented, my wife Jaya had gushed, an opinion that often takes ample time over before passing. I  recognized immediately that they were destined to be our favourites, and I was not wrong.” said Amitabh Bachchan .

Prior to this, an exhibition of the designers’ work was held at Sotheby’s, 34-35 New Bond Street, London W1, from 3rd to 5th September, to coincide with the launch of India Fantastique. (pix attached)

Designed to literally bring the volumes to life, the exhibition was a 3-D showcase of their 25-year careers, featuring masterworks of couture, craft, textiles and art, juxtaposed with sumptuous photographic highlights from the books.

The spectacular evening had a guest list naturally comprising of A-listers such as Lakshmi and Usha Mittal, Anil and Kiran Agarwal, Gurinder Chadha, Tony Morgan, Robin Woodhead etc.

India Fantastique is a beautiful insight into the world of Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, India’s most celebrated couturiers, showcasing their creativity in all its myriad forms, from fashion to furniture, and celebrates their twenty-fifth anniversary year.

Together, they have built a 25-year partnership that has included designing for leading actors and actresses, working with directors on costumes for epic Bollywood films, and building a brand that exudes luxury, artistry and Indian tradition. Their world unites India’s ancient cultural heritage with original contemporary design.

Twenty-five years in design has seen them achieve many a dream. And as they bask in this moment, there is no greater tribute they can pay to their journey than dreaming anew. Always bigger, always better…

Manish Malhotra for Mijjwan

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on September 4, 2012

MANISH MALHOTRA DESIGNS AT MIJJWAN SONNETS IN FABRIC 2012

The third year of Shabana Azmi’s NGO, Mijwan Welfare Society, hosted a fashion show, Mijwan Sonnets in Fabric 2012 on 3rd September at the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai. The highlight was Mijwan’s female population had their craftsmanship showcased on ramp, by leading models and celebrities, through Manish Malhotra’s designs. The 2012 edition of the show showcased embroidery done entirely by the girls of Mijwan. Manish has translated work done by Mijwan girls into contemporary modern designs.

Three years ago Namrata Goyal and Shabana Azmi approached Manish to help them to promote the Mijwan Welfare Society. At the fundraiser for Mijwan Welfare Society an NGO that was founded by noted film lyricist Kaifi Azmi to empower the girl child, he was introduced to the chikankari work done by the Mijwan girls. He was very impressed by their amazing embroidery. It stands up to the highest standard of craftsmanship anywhere in the world. Manish has wanted to do some socially responsible work for some time and Mijwan provided him the perfect opportunity. Since a year and a half he has adopted Mijwan- a tiny village near Azamgarh UP, playing mentor to 55 women from rural India with regular work and input in embroidery. And boy are we impressed with their work.

Shabana Azmi and Namrata Goyal opened the evening with a talk   in aid of the Mijwan Welfare Society. Educationist Nita Ambani walked with two little girls :Shabanas niece Meghna from Bombay  and Babita from Kaifi Azmi s school in Mizwan  to support the cause. 20 Models and celebrities such as Priyanka Chopra, Sonakshi Sinha, Shraddha Kapoor, Prabhudeva, Ankita Shorey, Arjun Kapoor, Chirag Paswan, Chitrangada Singh, Dia Mirza, Imran Khan, Imtiaz Ali, Kalki Koechlin, Karan Johar, Kunal Kapoor, Malaika Arora Khan, Neha Dhupia, Parineeti Chopra, Prateik Babbar, Rohit Roy, Rohit Shetty, Sameera Reddy, Shahana Goswami, Shazanne Padamsee, Diana Penty, Mary Kom,(who got a standing ovation) etc  walked the ramp for the Mijwan Welfare Society. All the celebs were cheered on by the audience as they sashayed down the ramp in  Manishs creations that  reflected the beautiful  handiwork from Mizwan.

Guest who came forward to support the cause were Mukesh Ambani,  Adi and Parmeshwar Godrej, Poorna and Varsha Patel, Neeraj Bajaj, Bijal Meswani,Urmila Matondkar, Hard Kaur, Riya Sen, Poonam Dhillon, Satish Kaushik, Sheetal Mafatlal etc. The celebs on ramp too sportingly gave a huge round of applause for the guests who showed up the heavy downpour and Manish too was delighted that all the friends  on ramp and  from the audience had braved the rains to make it in support of the Mizwan Welfare Society.

“In the globalised world of Fashion today it’s pointless to offer silhouettes to the West. But we have craftsmanship which they do not. This is our USP and that’s what we need to focus on. Mijwan to me is a microcosm of what India has to offer the world. We have a long history of the warp and weft of design aesthetics. It’s time we rediscover ourselves and go back to our roots,” says Manish Malhotra.

“The sangeet ceremony of the media magnate’s daughter in London chikankari work in the outfit designed by me has been done in Mijwan. It is a proud testament to Indian craftsmanship and it is heartening to provide regular work to these talented women “,   adds Manish.

In a dreamlike jeweled garden weaving a tapestry of  dark and delicate stories seamlessly into art, reinforced by the primordial, blues, violets and greys and regenerated through fluttering turbulent reds, highlighting the glamour of the ball gown and its contextual accessories down the fashion decades through painstaking embellishments.

Sanchita Womenswear

Mythical garden

A Mythical garden with an air of surrealism and fantasy; each outfit an interpretation of the ball gown with historical references, complex in embellishment , texture and tailoring, many a time a nod to the 50s and  60s,a confrontation of the classic with
modern.

Delicate sheers embellished with exotic cut feather shapes and punched fabrics for a contemporary lace update. Reflective blacks and golds and  rigid plastics for a futuristic feel. Delicate chiffons diffuse opulent embellishment; Bands of plaited and knotted tapes and cords appliquéd to soft sculpted cocoons and body armours. Muted jacquards with opaque and metallic embellishments, a testimony to the constant innovation in materials and embellishment.

The designs have been shaped in Linear and restructured proportions, kimono silhouettes, cinched waist dresses and asymmetrical poodle skirt interpretations, trapeze, drop-waist sack and flapper dresses, structured and collapsible forms.

‘Sadhu and the Samurai’ by Payal Khandwala

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 1, 2012

PAYAL KHANDWALA PRESENTS

SADHU AND THE SAMURAI

‘SADHU AND THE SAMURAI’ draws on the subtle similarities and the definite dissimilarities between these two characters. Fundamentally they both personify discipline, focus and austerity. They share purpose and philosophy, and embody the virtues of loyalty, self-awareness and spirituality.

However, they are distinctly different in their manifestations and this dichotomy makes them significant and intriguing. Symbolically the monk and the warrior make the perfect beginnings for a collection that can combine these extremes, whilst embracing their spirit.

The idea is to marry the gentle, carefree and frugal with the structured, systematic and ornamental. To take the accidental and unintentional and team it with elements that are methodical, orderly and deliberate.

The clothes interpret this contradiction as the layered separates are draped and wrapped alongside more constructed shapes. The palette embodies the origins of both the sadhu and the samurai with an arrangement of burnt orange, crimson and ochre, with coffee brown, charcoal, bronze and indigo.

The silhouettes are long and relaxed. This is where the non-conformist, unconventional ascetic encounters the strong yet graceful soldier.

This collection will be showcased at Lakme Fashion Week – Winter/Festive 2012 on 4th August, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. IST.

‘India in Color’ by Payal Singhal

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on July 29, 2012

Payal Singhal Festive 2012

India in Color: Vibrant Young Modern and Global…. lets meet New India………

The pink of mystical Rajasthan, the joyous, bright hues of the northern frontier, and the balmy bright colors of the east offer a kaleidoscopic insight into an almost perfect blend of history and modernism.  And perhaps a trip down its many roads will lead you to an understanding of its pulse. Maybe you’ll take the road untaken and bring home a whole new hue to your life….

Inspired by Indian Adivasi costumes of Kutch and Orissa this collection of vibrantly hued ensembles in a rainbow of acid neon’s of cyan, fuchsia, lime, cobalt, and indigo is a tribute to the colorful tapestry of the country. Spun into a visual story with contemporary silhouettes like Kutras, kaftans, tunics, dresses, kalidar saris and short lehngas and embroideries like pita, abhla and zardosi for a rural meets urban text.

Payal established her label in India in 2000 to fill a niche for eclectic Indian clothing for young style setters. Now thanks to a global design sensibility the label stocks in various countries and travels with its unique mobile trunk shows all over the world.

Payal will be showcasing her collection on 3rd August, 2012 at the Lakme Fashion Week – Winter/Festive 2012. IFP likde her previous collection which had Indian bridal-wear, this time around we are waiting to be surprised by the designer with something new.

‘Wonderful World’ by Bhairavi Jaikishan

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on July 28, 2012

Bhairavi Jaikishan who has been in the fashion industry since the past 25 years presents a second season with a solo show at the Lakme Fashion Week with a fresh new collection that celebrates life. A wonderful journey of the designer through these past 25 years of creative beauty.

An emphasis on the styles and techniques developed through these past years and infused with new elements of color, silhouettes and techniques to present a unique and fresh collection for the season ahead.
Bhairavi Jaikishan is known for her pastels and bright colour pallete. However, in this collection, she breaks her tradition and incorporates a range of deeper colours she has never used before. A collection that features Black, Nude, Ivory, Mustard, Emeralds, Midnight Blue, Aubergine, Hot Pink, Red and Burgundy.

A focus on cocktail evenings, the collection shows traditional styles of saris and lehengas along with a unique silhouette that marries the two together. The “Lehenga-Sari” which has now become a trademark of every Bhairavi Jaikishan collection is the perfect combination of style and sophistication.

The silhouette offers the buyer an interesting alternative to traditional clothing. It maintains the classic style of a lehenga along with the grace of the traditional sari. Yet the amalgamation of both these styles brings forth a young and fresh feel, enhancing the feminine form.

Teamed with the concept of contrasting blouses which add an eclectic feel to the ensemble and encourages the concept of personal styling.

This collection offers a change from the classics yet maintaining a timelessness about them. Blouses with high embellished necklines that omit the need for jewelled neck-pieces. Statements by themselves.

‘Indian Fashion Police’ is delighted to get this sneak preview of Bhairavi Jaikishan’s upcoming collection which spells elegance all the way. Eager to see this collection at the Lakme Fashion Week which starts 3rd August, 2012.

Ritu Beri’s collection is inspired by the Marilyn Monroe of today who is eternally youthful with a spirit that is flirtatious and sexy but in a girly way. Monroe captivated hearts through her breathy, blonde bombshell appeal combined with her light comical approach to life- her timeless glamour is represented perfectly by the Volvo Cars and this young, romantic Ritu Beri collection relevant to today’s Marilyn Monroe. It is the same woman who is also a fan of the Volvo cars.

Monroe said, “I’m very definitely a woman and I enjoy it. I don’t mind being burdened with being glamorous and sexual. Beauty and femininity are ageless and can’t be contrived,  glamorous cannot be manufactured- not real glamour; it’s based on femininity”.

Following her concept of femininity  and the philosophy of Volvo cars Beri’s collection is a range of feminine and spirited clothes. The basic concept behind this collection is to create a feminine look for the woman of today; who lives life on a fast lane but looks inwardly for that primary element- the soul!

The colour palette is soft; lots of creams with a splash of bright colours like red, pink, blue, turquoise and yellow. The fabrics used are basic weaves of pure cottons and laces, all artistically blended and intricately embroidered to create a magical spell. The silhouettes are very wearable, contemporary with interesting subtle details. Essentially, the collection is western with  an eclectic blend of blouses, long layered skirts, slim legged pants, with elaborate evening dresses and gowns.

The desire to go beyond accepted limits; to flirt with the forbidden; to upset the established order- this is the genesis of Ritu Beri’s collection.

This is a collection that is glamorous and accentuates the female form thereby celebrating the spirit of today’s woman- today’s Marilyn Monroe!
