‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ Premiere

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on November 14, 2012

Yashraj Films Diwali offering ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ premiered at the Yashraj Studios in Mumbai. Displays of Movies directed by Yash Chopra adorned the canvas on the red carpet. In the memory of the late director YRF had this showcasing where all the bigwigs of Bollywood attended in order to pay their respects to the great film-maker. IFP gets you the update on the red carpet of this event.

The leading ladies of this movie looked goo posing on the red carpet along with Shahrukh Khan. Anushka wore a blue, shimmer gown by designer ‘Roberto Cavalli’ while Katrina stuck to her favourite ‘Tarun Tahiliani’ saree style gown in golden. Out of these 2 pretty ladies, I am wavering more towards Anushka’s red carpet style…………but Katrina did look beautiful. SRK was dressed in a tuxedo and posed with the cast, wife & friends.

Gauri Khan also opted for a ‘Tarun Tahiliani’ saree style gown in blue. The clutch looked out of place with this outfit……though Gauri did work the outfit well the styling of this look could have been way better.

The entire Bachchan family attended this premiere. Amitabh & Jaya Bachchan were dressed for the occasion with Amitabh opting for a tuxedo while Jaya wore a graceful saree from her personal collection.

Abhishek & Aishwarya posed for the cameras where Aishwarya opted for Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla design…as for Abhishek he went for a bandhgala in black. I wish Aishwarya would not start opting for more fitting silouettes since she has lost so much of baby weight. Wish to see her flaunt in beautiful sarees……………have seen too many of these voluminous anarkalis on her off late.

Sridevi and Boney Kapoor walked in for the premiere……..sridevi looked glorious in a peach, shimmer saree [my guess – Manish Malhotra]. 🙂 🙂 She matures like red wine with each passing day.

Madhuri and Dr. Shriram Nene attended the premiere, where Madhuri was in a pink saree while Dr. Nene went for a casual look with a dinner jacket over denims. I wish Madhuri would experiment more with her hair……….maybe an updo for a change 🙂

Preity Zinta was the sunshine at this premiere……….she looked beautiful in a canary yellow saree with floral motifs all over. IFP does like the outfit plus the colour scores browny points from me………:-)

Aamir Khan made an entry with wife Kiran Rao. Aamir seemed to be experimenting with a new style of combining a vest with baggy pants……….unfortunately the pants were what went wrong in this look which he topped off with ankle high boots. 😦 As for Kiran…………no complaints for her look which was neat & sleek.

Hrithik roshan was present with his family too. Posing here with wife Sussane who was dressed in a pink Abu Jani – Sandeep Khosla anarkali. Dress whcih I do like……….it is the oversized clutch which I don’t like with this outfit. As for Hrithik……….formals might have looked better on the red carpet……….:-(

Akshay Kumar & Twinkle Khanna made an appearance post their new baby girl was born. Twinkle wore an Abu Jani – Sandeep Khosla design as well in beige & bronze but it was the big hair that made the look go wrong. The emerald earrings and Bottega Veneta clutch is classy but not crazy for this look. :-(. Akshay Kumar did look dapper but it were his shoes that made me sigh…..SIGH.

Imran Khan who has donned a mustache and looks every bit like a Haryanvi but still handsome. Wife Avantika was trying to channel vintage look with the hairdo & outfit. IFP does like the saree but the hair messed it up. She is young and should bring out that image of hers than try to look older than her actual age……. 😦

Rani Mukherjee was in her signature style – ‘Sabyasachi’ lehenga . Rani did look nice in this outfit especially with the pearl strings. on the red carpet IFP likes this look of hers….:-)

Sonam Kapoor in Elie Saab gown for the premiere……the outfit is beautiful but on Sonam it comes out to be heavy and voluminous. The gown does was beautiful detailing though but the entire look is not working on Sonam.

Rekha was all glam & glitter at the premiere in a golden Kanjeevarem saree. I would love to get into her wardrobe just to see her awesome collection of Kanjeevarem sarees. Though the colour is too bright for me…………..it works on Rekha. No complains here ……….:-)

Parineeti Chopra opted for a ‘Gauri-Nainika’ gown in black……………this structured gown  required more definition in terms of styling. The hair is too soft for this outfit o=plus the clutch adds to my woes…………..a sharp hairdo combined with demure make-up should have done the trick………and swap that clutch with a shimmer one please. Not liking this look one bit…….. 😦

Juhi Chawla was accompanied by her husband Jai Mehta. Juhi also stuck to her signature style of anarkalis with wedge kolhapuris……..I seriously wish to see Juhi in glamorous sarees and beautiful kurtis rather than see her in this look every time…..another sigh from my end. 😦

Mini Mathur has me drooling over her saree choices…………at the premiere too she wore a beautiful white saree with colourful border.  She poses here with her husband Kabir Khan…………IFP likes her look as she manages to stand out of the crowd. 🙂

Ameesha Patel looked good in a white gown with dangling earrings and a shimmer clutch. I think this might be one of her better looks in recent days………IFP likes. 🙂

Hello! Hall of Fame Awards 2011

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on November 10, 2011

Hello! magazine had organized ‘Hall of Fame’ Awards at the Trident hotel in Mumbai and all the fame monsters made their presence felt wearing the most stylish designer. A glimpse of the red carpet of this event.

Deepika Padukone looked red hot in this feiry red ensemble by designer ‘Gauri-Nainika’………the structured hair do, the make-up and the dress of course, all looked fabulous. L-O-V-E this look…………..this is what celebs should look like when they walk down the red carpet at any award event.

Kajol walked the red carpet in a ‘Manish Malhotra’ saree but had me on the earrings which were somehow not looking well co-ordinated with the outfit. Wish she would have opted for chandelier jadau earrings and cut out the net sleeves. The saree though was a pretty one. The clutch is of ‘Malaga’ by Malini Agarwala who has also featured in our ‘Interview with Designer’

SRK who I think would be dressed in a Karan Johar-Varun Bahl creation worked the 3-piece suit well. I dig his choice of sleek suits which are always well fit and stylish. Black remains his color of choice but how about trying Monochromatic prints for a change?

Sonam Kapoor walked the red carpet in a Gucci gown which somehow felt flat on this lovely lady. Have seen Sonam do better but here the  ‘out-of-place’ hair spoils the entire look plus the oversized clutch is no good either. Wish Sonam would have opted for a pulled back hairdo and a glittery tiny clutch for complete her look.

Karisma knows how to stunn fashionistas when she walked in wearing this LBD. She remains my eternal favorite celeb who knows what actually looks good on her. The pulled back hair works well plus the make-up is subtle. Karisma is looking every bit ‘Divalicious’. See her full length pic below and be a judge about the looks of the 2 pretty ladies

Women love men who are always sharply dressed………………………..no wonder why we cannot get enough of Rahul Khanna. Only he could carry off this shiny grey jacket and make it look so good. Me liking this look…………and you?

Jacqueline Fernandez wore a ‘Givenchy’ feather dress with a lace belt but funnily even her hairdo is styled like the feathers. She looks stylish and does absolute justice to this outfit. Like it……..

Madhoo in a ‘Herve Leger’ outfit but the bright color clutch is quite a distraction. The print ‘Herve Leger’ is enough to grab attention……………..the ‘pop of color’ was not needed. Other things aside,  Madhoo does look good in this outfit.

Queenie Singh in a ‘Jatin Varma’ dress certainly looks good. Thank god she did not opt for one of those short dresses……..this print dress from Jatin Varma’s  recent collection compliments her body yet makes her look like a ‘Diva’………..Way to go Queenie.

Gayatri Oberoi wore a black off shoulder gown with emerald jewelry but the improper fit of the silhouette marred the entire look for this beautiful lady. Plus the accessories and the clutch are not of much help too. But I do like the fact that Gayatri dresses up very gracefully on the red carpet.

F1 Rocks After Party

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 31, 2011

The buzz of Grand Prix Formula one is on a high in India with the opening of Lap Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida. It is for sure a glorious moment for racing sports in India and to celebrate this event UTV stars had organised the After-party at the racing venue. Lady Gaga was there to entertain the guests which had the creme-de-la-creme of the Page 3 world. We had to get the glimpse of red carpet to you………..

Deepika Padukone was all sparkle on the red carpet at this event and looked ‘H-O-T’………the sequin dress with a nude open toe heels and a tiny clutch. The hair, the dress, the shoes…………………love the look for such a fashionable event.

Perky Sonam Kapoor came in with designer Manish Arora wearing one of his designed creations. I am for sure not digging this look since the sequin dress is paired with golden leaf earrings…………..it is somewhat appears like a mis-match. The look was vintage inspired, but a more demure look would have suited the theme of the event. The pretty dress ought to have been paired with a crystal neck piece or eye-catching accessory. Though Sonam This is too plain on the lovely Sonam…………..sigh.

King Khan who must be definitely on a high post the success of Ra.One, looked pretty tired when he came to this event. Wonder the travel promoting his film did take a toll on him………….he is in a 3 piece black suit……….same old in black………..SRK please give us some color.

Preity Zinta also went the sequin mode with satin gloves…………now tell me who wears a satin gloves these days?? Even Brides have chucked this accessory………PZ wanted to make a style statement but sadly this look falls flat. Wish she would have donned a gothic look to rock the red carpet.

Lady Gaga performed at the after-party wearing a ‘Tarun Tahiliani’ outfit and a veil………………this outfit which has been seen in a saree version on the red carpet, was modified in a shorter version. But the net stocking with the ankle-length boots………let’s face it with Lady Gaga, nothing should be surprise people anymore.

Bipasha Basu came in a Falguni-Shane Peacock outfit which had a trail behind……………Like the short version from the front, but the trail seems unnecesary. The hair would have looked better in a pulled back look………I do appreciate Bips for the fact that she experiments with her outfit choices and has the guts to flaunt it on the red carpet.

Actor Imran Khan made an appearance with wife Avantika where surprisingly Avantika took the limelight in the style section as Imran donned a sloppy look. The sweater with a tie and denims with a stubble are ‘no-no’ on the red carpet. Imran we love your look in a crisp suit, this one is way too lame. As for wifey, love the sophisticated look combined with a stylish animal print clutch.

RA.One premieres in London

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 26, 2011

RA.One arrived at London as well with King Khan and his team walking down the red carpet for the premiere of the movie. It is the first Bollywood movie to be released overseas in 3D. Now that is an achievement in itself. No matter what critics might say, I feel people should go ahead and watch every movie. Thereafter you be the judge about the film, since there is alot of hardwork and effort put behind any movie. For now enjoy the photos of the London premiere.

Shahana wore a pink one shoulder gown in which the drape of the gown fell flat, but neck up I feel Shahana looked very pretty with those dangling traditional earrings and side swept hair. Though I did like her look at the RA.One Dubai premiere much more than this one. Will wait for the Toronto premiere to see her walk the red carpet once again.

Shahrukh Khan added a muffler this time around to his tuxedo which gave a very mature vibe, wish he would have walked the red carpet in a bandhgala or Jodhpuri jacket. This look has been seen so many times till now……………..need to see something new.

Kareena Kapoor all dressed up in a black D&G gown though the big bow was an eyesore, but that is just me. Kareena did look sexy in this outfit and this is quite a change from her saree clad looks which one gets to see her at most events. Like it……absolutely.

Arjun Rampal has been my favorite celeb who will make it to the list of best dressed celebs. A formal suit and a clean shave look works for me, what about you??

RA.One Premiere in Dubai

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 25, 2011

Ra.One finally releases on Diwali day but King Khan held the premiere at Grand Cineplex in Dubai. Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Shahana Goswami along with child actor Armaan Verma & the crew walked the red carpet at this event. Here is your look at the star studded event…………I am all eyes for Kareena Kapoor’s saree designed by Manish Malhotra.

GQ ‘Men of the Year’ Awards

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 1, 2011

GQ magazine gave away ‘Men of the Year’ awards in Mumbai………………..and we  had to write about who wore what and how did they fair on the red carpet. So here we go……..

Shahrukh Khan has been voted the best dressed man in India but I sometimes wish he would experiment with a bit of color rather than always playing safe in black. Though he does look good in his statement black tuxedo complete with push back hair.

Mrs. Khan of the other hand is definitely a graceful dresser……..Gauri was seen at this event wearing an ‘Emilio Pucci’ lace dress, Judith Leiber clutch and Jimmy Choo shoes. I like the fact that she did not go all matchy-matchy with her accessories instead opted for a silver clutch & nude open toe heels. Simple, elegant and absolutely appropriate for the event.

Farhan Akhtar seems to have forgotten the essential of these Tux……………the bow-tie of course. A handsome face like him definitely would have looked better styled if he had taken a little more pain in completing the evening look……………rather than just walking in without the tie.

Anushka Sharma was seeing wearing this green ‘Dior’ gown with loose curls on one side…………I am not much into this color but I cannot deny the fact that Anushka looked absolutely amazing. On anyone else the outfit would not looked so good, but Anushka sure makes it work.

Freida Pinto posed for the shutterbugs in this ‘Versace’ gown………….unfortunately the sequin-feathered tail gown could not make Ms. Pinto stand out in the crowd. In a single colour, the gown had too much detail work which did no justice to Freida’s petite frame. I wish she would have chosen one of her knee-length dresses which she is able to work so flawlessly.

It was a surprise to see Prateik in a suit looking dapper plus with a pretty arm candy!!…………now that’s ice-cream with cherry on the top. The lady in question is British model Amy Jackson who will be seen in India films soon. As for Prateik, please dress this way for red carpet events, casuals are best left for time-out with buddies.

Deepika Padukone looked glamorous in this gown [my guess is Ramona Narang] but the shoes were just so wrong on this outfit. I wish she would have opted for strappy heels instead of pumps. The hair, the make-up and the lady all do look fabulous, but one wrong thing can make the entire outfit look bad.

We might have to wait to see Siddharth Mallya carve a niche in the business world, but this man definitely rocks on the red carpet. I do like his sense of style and the effort he puts in to look good at every event. Even here he looked neat in these tuxedos……….some established bollywood stars should make a note on ‘how to dress’ for glam events.

Imran Khan never makes a mistake when he has to dress up a formal event. I suppose his style at GQ event speak a lot about his sense of style. Love to see him in well tailored suits and tux…………perfect 10 on 10 every time. As for his wife Avantika, she did look pretty in her red wrap dress and bronze peep-toes.  Except for the hair, I do dig her outfit………….nice.

‘Vision in White’ is how Simi Garewal likes to keep her style………..no doubt she looks incredible and absolutely defied aging but I do wish she would add more color to her styling in form of accessories. All white can be boring at times………..:-)

More pics coming your way.

IIFA Awards 2011 – Green Carpet

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on June 26, 2011

The Final day at IIFA Award 2011 arrived with so much of craziness all around. The entire Bollywood is have a ball at Toronto and making it’s presence felt in the far west. We have gotta see what the star looked like on the Green Carpet at this event………….even Hollywood celebrities turned up for the event………now that’s what I call Glam……

Shahrukh Khan

King Khan we know that you loooooooovvvvveeee black whenever you are on the red carpet, in this case the green carpet…………..but please give us a surprise once in a blue moon. He arrived in a basic black suit with a black shirt and to top it all a black tie………….he does look dapper, but I need a change from the routine………..seriously.

Bipasha Basu

Bipasha Basu looked every bit Glam in her Ramona Narang outfit in beige with golden accessories and coral nail paint. Though I feel the dress was just too short for the event but I am glad to know that she did change into a black gown afterwards before appearing on stage. Nonetheless she does justice to this outfit and looks great. Only she could have carried this outfit off with such an ease……..

Anil Kapoor and Hilary Swank

Handsome man with a beautiful woman as an arm candy are always a ‘Hit’ on the green carpet………….and Anil kept both these elements in his mind. Thank god he opted for a black suit with a golden beige tie looking every bit like a gentleman…….seems like he did take tips from beti Sonam…..:-) As for Hilary Swank, perfect is the only word for her.

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra wore a ‘Manish Malhotra’ Summer collection for IIFA………….a white lucknowi detail work lehenga with silver gotta and a velvet blouse to add the much desired pop of colour. Love the outfit but it falls flat due to the styling part….. I wish she could have gathered the ‘pallu’ and left it on her left instead of drapping it across. But Priyanka does look pretty when it comes to her make-up and hair.

Malaika Arora Khan

Malaika Arora Khan came in to shock me with her choice of outfit…………a one shoulder lace number with a cut out waist pattern spoiled the look for this beautiful lady. Plus the heavy earrings did no good either. The hair, the accessories, the dress, sadly looked disastrous on Malaika. Let’s just say that it was not her day at the IIFA Awards.

Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma also came in as a surprise to me when she dressed up in a ‘Sabyasachi’ saree for the event. I had expected her to go in for a demure gown or a short dress…………..sadly this ensemble did not excite. Seen this before on other actress as well but Anushka looks pretty as ever. She even took home the trophy home………maybe Sabyasachi is lucky for the leading ladies of bollywood???

Sonakshi Sinha

Flawless, flawless, flawless is my review of this pretty young star…………….the all shimmer dress in black, a Bottega Veneta clutch and a pink flowers in her updo was what I am looking out for a red carpet look. Sonakshi just delivered that look effortlessly looking like a million bucks. Love the dress, the styling and the make-up. She gets two thumbs up for getting it right with her 1950s look on the red carpet……..

Sridevi

Woooooooooooohhhhhhhhhoooooooo, Sridevi is such a Diva in this red gown which reminds me of aValentino due to the drape of the gown. The pulled back hair updo look, the diamond accessories, I am all eyes for her, even at this age she looks better than ever………….young ladies entering the filmi duniya, go take some lessons from her on how to be a star at any age.

Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Shetty in an off shoulder black gown is a good idea but add in a chucky necklace and a bright large purple clutch with lace shoes…………….then you have the recipe for red carpet disaster. But this time around hubby Raj Kundra looked good in this understated look…………Shilpa should have ideally ditched the clutch, opted for a ruby & diamond neck piece and wore a Jimmy Choos for this event………….I am sure she would have looked heavenly.

Sharmila Tagore

The gracious Sharmila Tagore was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award which made me think that she is way too young to get this award. I mean look at this pic above and you will realize that she still looks amazingly beautiful more than the actress these days. The saree, the jadau necklace, the simple hair & make-up…………….one word for this Diva – ‘Classic’. She is the Audrey Hepburn of Bollywood for sure.

Genelia D’souza

Genelia D’souza came all dressed in a Gaurav Gupta gown for the event, though I am not that impressed by the detail work on the one shoulder pattern plus the layered trail on the side……….I must say that Genelia still looked pretty in this outfit. The beige-golden colour and the hair were appropriate for such events, just the clutch somehow seemed out of place. I do expect Genelia to give us better red carpet look next time around.

IIFA Awards 2011 – Day 2

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on June 25, 2011

After the Grand opening of IIFA on day 1 plus the Double Dhamaal premiere, day 2 had loads in store for us with a Rcok concert. Even King Khan made an entry at IIFA. Sonu Nigam and Jermaine Jackson performed at ‘IIFA rocks’ concert where tribute was paid to Micheal Jackson on his 2nd Death Anniversary. Here is your glimpse at what our Bollywood stars wore on the Green Carpet and some performances……….

Dia Mirza performs at ‘IIFA Rocks’ Concert held in Toronto

Sonakshi Sinha works her charm on the runway for Gitanjali Jewelry in a ‘Vikram Phadnis’ Bridal outfit.

Designer Vikram Phadnis showcased his Bridal collection at this event.

Bipasha Basu in a ‘Sabyasachi Mukherjee’ couture during a fashion show held at ‘IIFA Rocks’

Shahrukh Khan

Shahrukh Khan was obviously dressed in black but this time around he added red tie to feature some pop of colour to his attire. But tell me something………who dresses up in formal ensemble for a Rock concert???? Shahrukh who is known looking best in his casual wear, somehow looks more ready to attend a board meeting………..this time around, the outfit was a total mismatch with the occasion. Whereas Anushka Sharma looked awesome in a black gown with tear drop earrings……I think we have a new fashionista on the block.

Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi Sinha also made an entry on the Green Carpet in a jumpsuit with nude belt & wedge shoes……….I like the fact that she went casual for the concert but her shoes absolutely destroy the look. With a jumpsuit I feel a nude peep toe heels would have suited better than the wedges in order to give a better effect of the ensemble.

56th Filmfare Awards – Red Carpet Review

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on January 30, 2011

The big, big, big nite had many beautiful celebrities take stage at 56th Filmfare Awards. How could I stay behind in getting the red carpet review for the event. Though I somehow don’t agree to who won the award since I would have certainly picked other deserving actors. But red carpet review is my honest expression, no bribing here. The event was held at the Yash Raj Studios on 29th January, 2011 in Mumbai. So keeping it short and simple………….let’s see what our celebrities wore at the award function…………….and how well they fared on the red carpet.

Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif was seen here wearing a Manish Malhotra outfit but frankly I am confused over whether it is a gown or a lehenga with an ultra long kurti???? What this outfit needed was a shorter kurti or better, a choli with a dupatta. Secondly this outfit was way too heavy to be worn at an award function, would have worked better for someone’s marriage. My Verdict : Pretty detailing, lovely colour………..but it was a case of overdressing for the occasion. Remember less is more at such events.

Malaika Arora Khan

Malaika Arora Khan a.k.a. ‘Munni’ wore a white and golden gown with gold accessories and nude open toe shoes. A ‘Diva’ like her can gracefully carry off any western attire and she did justice to this ensemble as well. The fault however was the design since somehow the golden one shoulder detail work seemed out of the picture. The gown would have worked better if it was a strapless gown with the detail work only on the bustier. My Verdict : Love Malaika in this gown, else the outfit would have not looked this good on anyone else.

Sonakshi Sinha

It felt like a breath of fresh air the moment I saw Sonakshi wearing this pretty ‘Gauri & Nainika’ outfit which is just right, given her young age. The green colour with minimal jewellery and ‘bling’ in form of the clutch. She also won the ‘Best Debut – Female’ of her role in ‘Dabangg’ which was truly well-deserved. My verdict : Love it………..

Vidya Balan

How can a woman always end up looking so flawless on the red carpet in a saree???? That is what I always ask myself whenever I see Vidya Balan in a ‘Sabyasachi’ creation. The attention grabbing statement bib necklace, the designer blouse, the black saree with detail work on the border………………Divine. Plus have never seen Ms.Balan in red-painted nails……..who so ever inspired her to get all dressed did a pretty good job. I am sure many jaws dropped once she made an entry at the award event.  My verdict : This is the tipping point for Vidya Balan & designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, please don’t ever go back to your earlier looks.

Urmila Matondkar

Urmila who has remained faithful to designer Manish Malhotra, wore his creation again. What a relief to see this beautiful women looking gorgeous on the red carpet. Yes I am still confused with the length of the kurti but Urmila is able to carry it off well plus the ‘bling’ is restricted above the waist and on the hemlines. Since her earlier red carpet sightings were a bit of a let down, this is better off than her earlier appearances. My verdict : Like it, suits her ‘petite frame’ well.

Hrithik & Suzzane Roshan

‘Lady in Red’ accompanied by her knight in shining armour…………………literally. Seeing Hrithik in those shiny pants and the grey suit I thought he had borrowed it from his father’s wardrobe where Papa Roshan might have still stored his 1970s clothes.  Suzzane on the other hand fares a wee bit better except for the pink clutch which looks out of the place. Again I would love to see her wear jewellery like a pair of earring on her gown. My verdict : Hrithik can look amazing in Karan Johar – Varun Bahl creation or a ‘Tom Ford’ suit.

Kajol

Kajol who made an appearance after a long time, also took home the award for the ‘Best Actress’…………………stylewise she seemed to have grabbed a Manish Malhotra outfit in a hurry. She is yet to lose her baby weight but why hide it under an oversized ill-fitting anarkali. I am sure that Kajol would have looked way better in a simple salwar kameez or even a saree. As for the baby weight, all I can say she still looks adorable. My Verdict : Honey you are beautiful in whatever you dress up but drop the baggy oversized clothes. They make you look bigger than you actually are.

Imran & Avantika Khan

The newly weds Imran Khan and Avantika made an entry very much in love…………….Imran was dressed in a tuxedo while Avantika went in for a bubble gum pink knee-length outfit with a black belt and nude pumps. Though not a fan of the shoes, I am happy that Avantika took a risk wearing this shocking pink colour for the red carpet plus the hair done up in a ‘do’ works for me. I would have just changed the belt to something with more metallic studs and shoes to match it. Imran looks dashing as ever……………..how many of our stars actually dress up like him for the red carpet. They are young and can easily experiment with their looks. My verdict : As a couple they look lovely, but I prefer Imran’s sleek look in the Tux over Avantika’s ensemble.

Preity Zinta

Is that Preity???? Whoa I never thought of seeing her dressing in Indian attire on the red carpet……………….no doubt she is looking refreshingly different and pretty but why is the beautiful work on the inner skirt which looks more like a lehenga hidden underneath the drapes??????? Is this another new styles of Manish Malhotra???? If your outfit has detail work please don’t hide the amazing work done by our hardworking Indian craftsmen. Preity looks beautiful but I am not digging her net saree. My verdict : Could have looked way better if the saree drape was different.

Rani Mukherjee and Shahrukh Khan with wife Gauri

Shahrukh Khan and Gauri made an entry with Rani Mukherjee and a friend, where the ladies donned midnight blue gowns  looking flawless. Like Gauri’s one shoulder Donna Karan gown but the oversized clutch is what I am not a fan of. Rani went for the shimmer halter neck dark blue outfit which for her petite frame works wonders. Shahrukh Khan is dressed as usual in a black suit and bed hair but this time the ladies got me drooling over their outfits. My verdict : Shahrukh is smart to have beautiful arm candy to complete his look……………;-)

Prachi Desai

Prachi Desai who was one of the nominees came in this blushing pink gown which was indeed very dreamy but her hairdo somehow woke me up from that dream. The braided hairdo would have looked amazing on an Indian attire than on a gown……………….anybody recall Vidya Balan wearing a saree with braided hair. How classy was that???  Call me traditional but this is somehow not working for me. I would have styled her with side swept hair kept open. My verdict : Love the dress, hate the hair.

Amitabh Bachchan with Bahu Aishwarya

Papa Big B made an appearance along with Aishwarya…………..I do recall that he had boycotted this award function last year……….let bygones be bygones for now. Aishwarya who was nominated in ‘Best Actor – Female’category was looking ravishing in this Manish Malhotra off-white creation. I truly wished she would have at least won the ‘Critics Award’  not that Vidya was not deserving, she is a brilliant actress………………but Aishwarya did stand out in ‘Guzaarish’. Maybe this is just my opinion but stylewise Aishwarya looks elegant. Big B on the other hand wore a two-toned blazer which he was able to carry off for this glitzy event. He received an award for completing 40 glorious years in Bollywood. My verdict : Father & daughter-in-law look graceful. Aishwarya is definitely my pick for the ‘Best Dressed’ at the Filmfare.

Prateik Babbar

Is this the same young guy we had seen last year at the Filmfare wearing sneakers with a suit???? Hell, yes it is Prateik Babbar looking suave and happening…………….Dhobi Ghat seems to have done wonders to his style sense. Thank God we are able to see his good looks in this clean get-up of his. I am sure he would have found many girls eager to party with him the night away. The black single button blazer suit with clean-shaven look gets a thumbs up from me My verdict : He looks very sophisticated…………Ohh La La…….

Raveena Tandon

Last time when I saw Raveena on the red carpet, I jumped out of my seat quite literally. But this time I am not disappointed with her choice. The black anarkali is also MM creation [Hope you know MM stands for Manish Malhotra who has dressed half of the ladies for this event] is definitely a good break from her earlier red carpet appearances. Though the dress itself does not stand out much, Raveena still looks good in it. My verdict : Strictly Like it, though I feel Raveena can do much better. I would dress her in more contemporary, sophisticated fashion.

Sridevi & Boney Kapoor

Sridevi is looking ‘HOT’ as the days are passing by……………..seriously I wonder why she never wore such beautiful gowns on the red carpet earlier. The only thing which should have been skipped is the shimmery stole. The satin gown itself is gorgeous enough, why let it get distracted by anything else??? As for Boney Kapoor, I cannot see him when his beautiful wife takes all the attention on the red carpet. My Verdict : Sexy outfit, skip the stole.

HDIL India Couture Week 2010 – Day 2

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 8, 2010

Karan Johar & Varun Bahl

The best dressed men of India walk the runway together…………………Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan and Shahrukh Khan……………….Uffffffffff can’t get enough of glamour. The event HDIL India Couture Week 2010 and the designers were Karan Johar & Varun Bahl. Big B wore a black coat with velvet collar design while Hrithik wore a black velvet jacket which had a very regal touch to it with the antique watch on the side………very vintage. Where as Shahrukh who couldn’ t keep from dancing on the ramp as well, was wearing a suit designed by the duo. The three handsome men definitely were a delight to see on the runway together……………………….yummy…….:-)

Coming back to the collection, the clothes were very Victorian era inspired with frilled cuffs, long coats & jackets, the big collars, vintage detail work………….the collection was absolutely original, wearable and elegant. Karan’s vision & Varun’s brilliance make for a commendable collection……………celebrity or no celebrity, the collection has substance.

Queenie Dhody

Malaika Arora Khan walked the ramp for jewellery designer & socialite Queenie Dhody……………it was all emeralds & diamonds for Malaika though not liking the outfit a bit. The styling I feel was all wrong here………………a western outfit fitted with a traditional waist band???? I would have preferred these jewels with a sexy choli and a shimmer white saree that would have acted as a perfect background for the jewels. Plus the hair would have looked better if left open & tossled a bit…………….a petite like Malaika needs volumes when it comes to hair. The outfits for Queenie’s show were designed by Nandita Mahtani.

Maheep Kapoor

Maheep Kapoor had the entire social circuit on the runway…………….literally. But i must admire the fact that all the celebrities some of who are close friends of Maheep, walked the ramp wearing Seema Khan outfits and Maheep Kapoor jewels. I feel she is the only designer to have only celebrities walk for her than models……………which brings to me to a question………….are our models gonna go extinct if celebrities take over???? Sonakshi Sinha, Natasha Khan, Ayesha Takia, Bhavna Pandey, ‘Aisha’ movie celebs Amrita Puri & Ira Dubey and many more. I liked the jewellery but was not convinced of Seema Khan’s designs on few celebrities…………..like the white asymmetrical gown with the stark black broad belt which took centre stage than the jewellery on Sonakshi with the hideous hairdo was not upto the benchmark of a couture week, Ayesha Takia’s strapless dress put more emphasis on her assets which required less attention. Though I liked the LBDs……………not a fan of the other outfits.

Raj Mahtani

Raveena Tandon was the showstopper for Raj Mahtani’s jewellery collection…………..she came on the runway wearing  a very vintage traditional necklace which had loads of precious stones………..asmuch as the jewellery was beautiful, the styling was bad with Raveena wearing a body suit along with a sheer drape in black & golden. I wish she would have worn somethin equally vintage as her jewellery. Even a brocade saree in dark hues would have done the work…………..as for the hairstyle, please don’t get me started……………it was worst. Who ever styled her, needed to go to styling school first…………….but in the end I cannot deny the fact that Raj Mahtani’s collection was good.

HDIL Couture Week 2010 Bash

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 6, 2010

Another couture week is here but in my opinion I feel we should limit ourselves to a maximum of 2 couture week per year that showcase all designers………………why do we need so many couture week where one gets to see the same designs, the same designers and of course the same celebrities again………………have we become addicted to couture weeks???? Do we love fashion so much that the sense is going out the window???? I often ask myself these questions but for the sake of fashion, I am ready to let go of this Q & A session in my mind………..

The HDIL couture Week 2010 started with a bash held at Grand Hyatt.

Shahrukh & Gauri Khan along with Rani Mukherjee

Shahrukh Khan with lady love Gauri an friend Rani Mukherjee posed for the cameras………..Shahrukh dressed in a brown shirt and black trousers looked quite ready to party the night, Gauri in a beautiful red Valentino and Rani in a short aquamarine dress designed by a Greek designer…………….all three looked good on the red carpet especially Rani since the outfit fits the bill for her petite frame. As for Mrs. Khan, I would have opted for a shimmer black or grey clutch plus shoes……………..Shahrukh was at an ease when it came to dressing up, but hey it is just a bash………….

Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone who is our Style Star for the month, wore a satin beige one shoulder top with black fitted skirt and satin heels with rosette on them……………..on the whole I am not digging the look because of the shoes and the lack of glamour in her look. It gives vibe that one is trying to minimize the sexiness quotient in this outfit by adopting a ‘girl next door’ make-up & hair. I would have prefered if the top would have extended hemlines till knees and acted as a short cocktail dress…………Plus those shoes just don’t gel that well……………..though love the one shoulder top along with the crystal clutch……………..but a beautiful soul like Deepika needs to look glamorous by adding the accessories.

Raj Kundar & Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Shetty also made an appearance with hubby Raj Kundra in tow but I have to say………….why does Raj always have that messy look on his face??? With such a fabulous looking ‘biwi’ as arm candy, he should dress to the core complete with good personal grooming. I feel that he should either go in for a beard or no beard…………….the style ‘in between’ does not suit him at all. Whereas I have no complaints about Shilpa………………she looks perfect in her Little black dress with gold trimmings and loooooooooooooovvvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeee those shoes. Must say that combining black and golden in western wear is not easy and Shilpa knows how to do justice to it……………Mr. Kundra would expect you to clean up next time.

Karisma Kapoor

I can’t get enough of this ‘Diva’………………….there have been no instances till date that this fabulous ‘momma of two’ has ever dressed up shabbily. Not a hair is out of place whenever she is on the red carpet……………….in this outfit, I simply adore her look in a little black dress with hoopla earrings adding a dash of glitz to the look while keeping the clutch and shoes simple. The key to achieve her look is to let one piece get all the attention while other pieces act as a background. Simple yet ‘oh so classic’……………….I don’t mind declaring that she is one of the most well dressed women of our country.

Queenie Dhody

“The animal, the animal instinct in me…………….” that’s just a long lost song which I happen to remember looking at Queenie. Her favourite animal prints are doing a lot of appearances on the red carpet, unfortunately none of them work. The dress combined with golden jewellery, belt and the animal print shoes are overwhelming and absolutely not age appropriate…………….I would rather see a 20 year old young lady wear this outfit than Queenie……………as I said in my earlier posts, animal print in 40s works better if used in small amounts. This dress would have worked better if it was in a plain dark colour with alluring pair of heels.

Malaika Arora Khan & Arbaaz Khan

Malaika & Arbaaz came in as a pair wearing nautical stripes……………but the matchy-matchy is just getting to me. Arbaaz’s torn denims are definitely a red carpet no-no please paired with those formal mocassins……………..sheer disaster. Neither do Malaika’s leather pantlook and the heels paired with Louis Vuitton clutch don’t do much for her look. My say is this look is OK if you are going for dinner out with family or buddies………………but for a couture week bash………….please dress up a bit eventful.

Manish Malhotra, Urmila Matondkar and Sophie Choudhary

Did Urmila make a dress out of a silk scarf????? Looking at her dress I feel that she just did that……………..and those shoes………..kill me someone but they have spoilt the entire look. People firstly leave the animal print alone, secondly I would have liked it a bit if the shoes were strappy heels or open toe pumps. Why do ourbollywood women have that affinity with flowers on their feet. Manish Malhotra seems like he has had a very tiring day and just came to the party to get a break. While Sophie looks ready to pary in her short printed dress with Bottega Veneta clutch and black basic heels. Out of the three, Sophie definitely wins my vote for keeping in simple yet party right.

Gayatri Oberoi, Sonali Bendre and Goldie Bhel

Gayatri Oberoi poses here with Sonali Bendre and her hubby Goldie Bhel……………..Gayatri looks ultra glam in the Herve Leger bandage blue dress pairing it with Judith Leiber clutch and golden heels. While Sonali kept it simplein a little black dress and bronze heels while Goldie who also kept it simple,  is enjoying his moment with the lovely ladies. My favourite out of the three has to be Gayatri for looking ‘Oh la la’ in that dress of hers.

Raveena Tandon

Raveena Tandon was sighted after a loooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnggggggg time wearing black on black. Where is the glitter??? The all black attire is now getting to me……………Raveena could have worn a beautiful pendant or earrings or even jazzy belt with funky shoes. But a beautiful woman like Raveena, this look is not doing any wonders for her.

Bhavna and Chunky Pandey

Bhavna and Chunky walked in where Bhavna was wearing a pretty navy blue strapless dress with a stylish belt, while Chunky is more in a very casual avatar in denims and a white shirt. But somehow I am digging his yellow mocassins which adds the much desired pop of colour to the outfit. It is unusual choice but works well on Chucky’s look. On the whole, the couple looking good together.

Arjun & Mehr Rampal

Mr & Mrs. Rampal camein hand in hand where Mehr wore a Malini Ramani kaftan one shoulder outfit and Arjun was in his casual avatar. Thankfully Mehr added that much needed colour to her style but would have preferred this outfit in a shorter version. With that hot bod, why hide it under loose clothes when you can show them off with elegance. Arjun seems to have just got out of bed and onto the red carpet……………….Wake up Arjun…………….its time to party.

Things that are OK to be worn again!!!

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on July 28, 2010

People have a big misconception that once you have worn an outfit, shoe, jewellery……………..that is the end of it and they would not want to repeat the same even if that piece is a classic. Just for your fashion info I have some basic necessity in a woman’s wardrobe that are absolutely OK to be repeated and should not be considered a fashion crime…………I might be no one to re-write the fashion rules but a ‘vintage’  or a ‘classic’ deserves to be worn again and again.

Jewellery

This is one of my most favourite things in this entire world — Jewellery……………but why are people not open to the idea of wearing it again. I wear mine since the past so many years…………….gold, silver, platinum, precious, semi-precious or even not so real ones……………wear it as many times as you desire it. Women wear their wedding bands and engagement rings all the time……………..then why not your beautiful pair of earrings.

Deepika Padukone has worn her pair of Kundan earrings at many different occasions on the red carpet………Like the first one for Chandni Chowk to China Premiere, Cannes 2010 and the Miss India Contest where she was one of the judges. Earrings are a Stunning piece of Indian Jewellery and I see no reason why such a fabulous piece not be worn again……………Kudos to Deepika for carrying it like no other………………Love those classic earrings.

Handbags

Handbags are something I advice all you ladies to buy a good piece every year and stick to it all year round. I you can afford more than more the merrier but avoid buying fakes at all cost. If you cannot afford the high-end range it is better to go in for a brand that fits your pocket. Carrying a fake is definitely a fashion crime but carrying a brand within your budget is a ‘must have’. There are infinite number of colours and designs available in today’s market………..go ahead, take your pick.

I might not be a ‘Birkin’ fan but Shilpa Shetty definitely makes her Birkin bag in chocolate-brown work pretty hard…………she takes it wherever she travels………..with a classic bag like this one I can carry it for more than a decade.

Shoes

Love, adore and take good care of your shoes……………….literally. They are the most hard-working of all fashionable buys………..so own a good pair. Have at least 4 pairs of shoes  – everyday wear, basic flip-flops, party wear and casual wear. Flats or heels………..wear whatever you are comfortable in………………it is not necessary a woman should only be seen in a 4 inch above heels at all times………even Sarah Jessica Parker wears flats when she is not on a movie set. So clear off that misconception in your heads, ladies.

Check out Kareena Kapoor wear the lovely pair of platforms at different venues along with different outfit…………..a good pair of shoes no matter how old are always ‘In Vogue’. Same goes for men……….seen below is Abhishek Bachchan wearing a pair of Blue colour crocodile leather shoes…………PETA might not be very happy but the shoes are unique and different from the usual black pair of shoes. Pair it with denim or formal it works well. [Maximise by clicking on the pics]

Sunglasses

Once you have found a perfect pair of sunglasses…………….STICK TO THEM…………..honestly I don’t understand the obsession with people and their sunglasses……….does one really need that many pairs of sunglasses. I feel one pair is good enough for a year or max 2 years but a pair like Raybans ‘Aviator’ or ‘Wafers’ last a lifetime. But a good pair that is not just stylish but also gives you UV protection from the harsh afternoon tropical sunrays. Go for a shape which is unlike the shape of your face………..kinda a square frame for an oval-shaped face and find a pair which can be worn with formal as well as casual.

Seen here is our very own King Khan sporting a pair of Aviator for his daily outings at the IPL……….he is stylish that is beyond doubt but he also is smart enough to make the pair work with a pair of denim with T-shirt as well as a blazer.

Watches

This glorious tiny little things which makes the world go around is an absolute must have in every person’s wardrobe. Can be an Indian brand like Titan which makes one of the best watches in our country and I have 2 pairs of it which I have been wearing for the past 10 years……….it is still working amazingly………………else you could get yourself an international brand like Tagheurer, Omega, Rolex, Guess, Rado the list is endless………..whatever fits your pocket. You might be able to afford the best brands but the watch should suit your personality and most important should suit your wrist. A young guy’s sports watch does not suit an old man claded in a three piece suit and vice versa………………so see to it suits and enhances your personality. The choices are infinite  in Indian market today……………so go ahead buy a stunning piece of time for yourself.

Shahid Kapoor seems to love his watch since he has been seen sporting it on many different occassion………..the watch is smart, nothing flashy and suits him well.

Fashion & Bollywood movies……………….

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on June 19, 2010

I am a movie buff & there is no confessing about it. If you are an Indian who does not see any Bollywood movie or dance to any of its melodious tunes…………….please don’t call yourself a ‘Saccha Hindustani’…………….Bollywood is in our blood. These days it is in our dressing too…………ever notice your next door neighbour auntyji dressed in a Madhuri Dixit’s ‘Hum Aapke hai kaun’ trademark blue saree or your best friend trying to be like the gorgeous Deepika Padukone in those shorts & spaghetti tops which she wore in ‘Housefull’ or a guy walking in a denim with T-shirt reminding you of Ranbir Kapoor’s recent flick or the sexy siren dancing in a party dressed to kill as Kareena Kapoor in ‘Kambakt Ishq’…………………we all have seen these people somewhere right!!!

Let me take you through the fashion down the decades in bollywood and how it has changed the face of what you, me or anyone as a matter of fact wears in our everyday life.

1950s

I think the obsession started with seeing the yester year actresses like Madhubala, Nutan, Meena Kumari, Nargis Dutt, Waheeda Rehman all dressed in sarees with blouses which were printed or plain had puffed short sleeves.  The Western wear of the 1950s was long middy dresses since it was considered inappropriate for a woman to be dressed in revealing clothes. How can I ever forget the beautiful vintage jewellery like jhumkas, hooplas, matha tikka, chokker, bangles….. ahhhh……. jewellery……………… beautiful jewellery. The keyword for this decade was ‘Simplicity’……….be it the designs of the clothes or the make-up it was all kept minimal.

Legendary Actors like Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Kishore Kumar wore traditional clothes like dhoti kurta, kurta pyjama and when it came to formal western wear they opted for suits with tie. Hair for men were short accesorized usually with hats and women usually wore their long hair in a bun, plaits or simply left them open. There was no space for a tom-boy in that era since women were considered to act more feminine and men had to be thorough gentlemen. Movies like Awaara, Naya Daur, Chalti ka naam gaadi, Daag have set the trends for the people of India. But the fashion of the 1950s is classic and evergreen just like the movies.

1960s

Enter the Era of Anarkali suits, chudidhar with fitted kurtis & Mumtaz Saree [as seen above] were what one who has lived that era can recall……unfortunately I was born 2 decades late but would have loved to live the 1960s era when fashion had made a grand entry into Bollywood. People were discovering new styles in both Indian & western couture, experimenting with their looks.

What I can remember after seeing the movie is the high hair updos, ‘Sadhna’ cut which was a name given to fringe haircut, elongated eye-liner, big earrings, tight fitted clothes and the famous ‘twist’ dance. Asha Parekh, Mumtaz, Meena Kumari, Sharmila Tagore, Helen, Saira Bano were the top actresses in this time era influencing the fashion. The clothes were bolder than the previous decade in this ‘eastman’ colour decade.

Of course how can I ever leave the men behind…………..Icons like Shammi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Dharamendra, Manoj Kumar, Sunil Dutt ruled the bollywood scene and they generally prefered wearing western attire. Even today when I see the movies from this era, I brings so much of joy………………..Mughal-E-Azam, Teesri Manzil, Junglee, Aradhana, Bramhachari, Sahib, Biwi aur Ghulam, Jigri Dost, Padosan, Pakeezah [though released in 1972 it was made in the 60s]……………always refreshing to see these movies.

1970s

The ‘Flower Power’ or the ‘Disco Age’ years must have been the era that left quiet an impression on minds of very bollywood fan. The bell bottoms, platform heels, colourful sunglasses, psychedelic prints, butterfly collar shirts, big  jewellery, Maxi dresses, tie-dye designs are still fresh in my memory.  ‘Big’ was beautiful in the 1970s……………now that can be your hair, the print on the fabric, buttons on the shirt or the hemlines of your pants…………….

The hemlines went up and the necklines plunged a bit…………bold, demure style followed in this era where actresses like Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Neetu Singh, Hema Malini, Jaya Badhuri Bachchan ruled the time. The ‘bangs’ or the ‘wings’ look was very ‘In’ during the 70s for women…………Men too loved wearing their hair long with prominent side-burns. The leading men in bollywood were seen wearing fitted Blazers which were a bit flared at the hip coupled with broad ties………..I remember my Dad still has a couple of those and still not ready to give them up saying it was huge trend during his college years. Three piece suit also gained prominence during this era where one could see the hero’s of Bollywood wearing this style on & off the silver screen.

Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharamdra, Shashi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Jeetendra, were the idols for the young generation. Movies like Sholay, Seeta aur Geeta, Deewar, Yaadon ki Baraat, Amar Akbar Anthony, Bobby, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Anand, Guddi, Chupke Chupke were the movies making waves in bollywood.

1980s

I am a sample piece from this era since I was born in 1980s……………I am not telling you the year though………..but the bell bottoms + platform heel trend was phasing out ……………enter the strappy sandals and denim. Loads of colour was also the focus of the 1980s but people prefered wearing single colour instead of going in for fusion.

Rekha, Sridevi, Jaya Prada, Shabana Azmi, Dimple Kapadia, Padmini Kolhapure, Amrita Singh, Poonam Dhillon, Neelam ruled the silver screen in the 1980s. The saree in plain colours was a rage when Mr. India released…………I could see all the friends of my mother buy sarees in plain colour and consider themselves Sridevi……………Bhagyashree made the white Salwar Kameez famous in ‘Kabootar Jaa Jaaa’ song from the movie ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. The hair style meant more volume and people were simply crazy behind Dimple Kapadia’s hair do in ‘Saagar’ that every beauty salon put up a poster of Dimple in order to boost their sales. Hope you all remember the ‘Sagar Choti’ ……………..that is where the name came from. This era also made pants much more of a fashion for common people with denims catching the focus.

Actors like Sunjay Dutt, Sunny Deol, Mithun Chakravarthy, Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Naseerudin Shah, Rishi Kapoor made the fitted pants or jean…a routine. Of course not forgetting Jeetendra who made the white pants with white shoes a must have for every guy………………………. The rugged look was ‘In’ for the guys of the 80s. Movies that left a mark not just at the box office but also in fashion were Umrao Jaan, Mr. India, Maine Pyar Kiya, Chaalbaaz, Silsila, Shaan, Sagar……………

1990s

I remember the frenzy that followed the weeks after ‘Hum Aapke hai kaun’ released in India, If I ever went to any wedding I could see a belle dressed as ‘Madhuri Dixit’……………….remember the famous purple saree [Pic above] from the song ‘Didi tera devar deewana’…………….

Colourful Bandhni, shoulder pads, scarves, chunky jewellery, ankle high boots, tight fitted skirts, hair bands, big decorative bindis and matt lipsticks were a rage in 1990s. And of course all the actress like Kajol, Urmila Matondkar, Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, Raveena Tandon, Juhi Chawla set the trend for it. Menswear had also changed to a lot of extent with waist coats, leather jackets, baggy pants, loud print ties, dungrees, colourful denim making an entry into their wardrobe. Even if a guy is not all muscles he would wear a T-shirt underneath his over-sized shirt to make him look like a hunk……………..yeah I know you have been there too, buddy. Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan have sported that look in many of their movies. Talking about movies, I feel films like Hum Aapke hain Kaun, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil toh Pagal hai, Yes Boss, Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam, Rangeela, Raja Hindustani made an impact on the fashion industry as well.

These movies also made way for designers to enter Bollywood in a big way………….famously known was Manish Malhotra for transforming Kajol in DDJL, Kuch Kuch hota hai or giving a make-over to Karisma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani…………Designers made it big and created a new path where the clothes were not required to be rented from the dresswala but to be picked up from a boutique. The 1990s era was a gateway for Fashion designers who were able to showcase their creations not just in movies but also on Ramp and international beauty pagents. Actors & Actresses became more image conscious with respect to what they wore…………..each one wanted the designer to create a unique style for them. In india this was a revolutionary period in terms of fashion for sure……

2000s

Enter the era of ‘Stylist’ since the designers were already here……………the bollywood actors & actresses started making more frequent appearance on the red carpet hence needed someone to style them both on and off the screen as well. The best example of course can be Dhoom 2 where stylist  and fashion editor of Vogue India Anaita Shroff Adajania had made all the people look ‘hot’ with her styling tricks. She was also a part of the cast of ‘Kal ho na ho’ which was another style forward movie. But people loved the ‘Dil Chahta hai’ gang that changed the way men looked at themselves in the mirror.

Suddenly ‘Metrosexual Men’ were very much in vogue………..they styled their hair well, wore designer labels only, went in for a regular manicure/pedicure & professional grooming, carried a pair of stylish shades…………..in short men became much, much more fashion conscious which was a woman’s business till the turn of the century. Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan,  Saif Ali Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal we owe this change to you guys……..

It was ‘More the Merrier’ for women too who had an array of style to choose from…………she could go vintage with the classy ‘Devdas’ look by wearing kundan jewellery with designer saree or look like a million bucks by adorning short dresses which Kareena Kapoor carried off  in ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ ………else look feminine in the Anarkali chudidhar which Sonam Kapoor wore in ‘Saawariya’…………..the choice is unlimited.

Kareena Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherjee, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, Bipasha Basu are the front runners from the beginning of the 21st century. New faces like Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut are being looked up as the ‘next best thing’ in Bollywood fashion. The movie list that set a fashion trends would go on forever since today fashion changes as quickly as the movies in the theatre……….hope the next decade is even more fun-filled.

Stylish Indian Gentlemen

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 12, 2010

Just the other day when I was busy updating my blog, my husband came in my work area and asked me……….”Why is that there is not much about men and their style in your blog??”…………………Valid question for which I had no answer……..maybe I like many other fashionistas kept thinking that fashion only meant ‘what women wear’………….but now it is time to change my focus and include men’s fashion as well. Though I will try my best to bring forth new articles about the opposite sex, people’s recommendation on the same will always be welcome…………….

Since I have written an article about the stylish women in India, I start off my section on men with the most stylish Indian celebrity.

Hrithik Roshan

‘Greek God’ is the word for Hrithik Roshan, everytime I see him on screen my eyes are wide with amazement………..no, not because he is good looking, so handsome, has such a good physique……………not for those reasons, but for the way he dresses up on-screen and off. How does he manage to get his look right for his role every single time. Of course he rocked in Dhoom 2 where he wore designer jeans with shirts and T-shirts, as a black phantom in ‘Krrish’, as a King in ‘Jodha Akbar’ or his look in forthcoming movie ‘Kites’………………..every frame , every angle he simply looks ‘Wow’. Hrithik’s plus point is that he knows very well what suits him and what he can carry off with sheer elegance on the red carpet. My favourite look for Hrithik has always been a good shirt paired with denim or in tuxedo. Hrithik can also try wearing a Jodhpuri jacket since these days Hrithik is more into a mature look with a beard and the jacket will suit him fine.

Amitabh Bachchan

The ‘Czar’ of Indian cinema needs no style tips from a nobody like me……………..I adore his style in bandhgalas or even in tuxedos which have a hint of Indianess in them. The designer who has done a lot of justice to his look has been Raghavendra Rathore for the movie ‘Eklavya’ and also  ‘KBC – Season 1’ [This is entirely my opinion]. The reason why Mr. Bachchan can carry off any outfit with ease has a lot to do with his personality. Surely if any other actor was to dress up in an outfit designed for Mr. Bachchan, I bet it might not look that good on any other person. He might not have the conventional good looks but has a charm which even the most good-looking men would lack. In my opinion he dresses up like a perfect gentleman and is a truly a ‘Legend’. If I were to ever style him for the red carpet it would be definitely in a ‘Tom Ford’ Tuxedo or Jacket.

Shahrukh Khan

Shahrukh Khan needs no introduction to style but even though he was never born fashionable, he learnt the trick to look good. I appreciate the fact as mentioned in my earlier write-ups, that Shahrukh Khan always makes an effort to dress up for the Red carpet which many male celebrities fail to do so……………he always has a perfect suit on, clean-shaven look, hair set well……….I won’t be surprised if he was the one to start the culture for men to dress up for the red carpet. He also looks very stylish in jeans and a simple T-shirt, I think it is not him wearing the clothes but his attitude which makes even the most simple outfit come to life. I do remember seeing his super-duper hit movie ‘Kuch Kuch hota hai’  during my college years in which he was carrying a ‘Tommy Hilfiger’ bag…………..the very next week of the movie release, loads of people in my college had the very same bag of course from the flea market since Mr. Hilfiger was yet to open a store in India and as a college student we could not afford any branded stuff. Still I just wish to see Shahrukh on the red carpet dressed in a Jodhpuri jacket or a bandhgala since I have seen him less in ‘Indian Avatar’ and more in the western high fashion brands. No doubt he fits in those suits like a glove but a dash of Indianess in his style would surely turn heads.

Ness Wadia

Ness Wadia who is the leading man of the ‘Wadia Group’, co-owner of Kings XI Punjab, great-grandson of Mohammad Ali Jinnah,  a regular face on the Page 3 circuit and of course one of India’s eligible bachelor has a very tasteful sense of styling. Though few years back we used to see him in his designer suits only, these days one get’s to see a more relaxed Ness Wadia wearing his jeans and his team jersey. He might stay away from the Bollywood hype but makes people sit up and notice him wherever he goes. He sure looks like a man who takes his dressing very seriously………..I have never seen anyone carry off those made-to-fit suits with so much of panache. His flamboyant style is the reason why he is on this list. But would love to see him in a knee-length black Achkan with white chudidhar to show-off his regal looks or he can even experiment with Ralph Lauren suits & casual wear.

Prannoy Roy

As a kid I would hate to see news on television but somehow I used to watch ‘The World this Week’ with utmost attention as if someone was telling be a story…………………the reason definitely was Mr. Prannoy Roy’s presentation of the past week’s historic events which even as a kid I could relate to and absorb the knowledge provided by his program. No wonder today Prannoy Roy is known as the face who leads the Indian Media with his NDTV channel. The man responsible for changing the visage of news reading in India keeps his attire totally business like. Of course not everyone have a salt & pepper beard and still manage to look so graceful. These days he is seen on television only while covering important matters but has been usually seen wearing a suit. Best part about Prannoy Roy is that he never craved for attention despite being in limelight, maybe his understated style has made people notice him. Any man who is works in an Indian corporate work culture can relate to him easily in terms of his style……………..simple, sophisticated, no frills and to the point. The reason why he makes this list is the realistic, practical approach which Prannoy Roy has towards his work and his dressing.

Omar Abdullah

On usually sees big and even the not so big politicians always walking around with an entourage consisting of their party member plus bodyguard. It was pretty unusual for me to see Mr. Omar Abdullah travel in an economy class in a no frills airline without any such crowd. He was what we usually call a ‘common man’ in that flight……………….a wonderful change to see in young politicians since he hails from the influential ‘Abdullah’ family of Jammu & Kashmir which has been involved in Indian politics for generations. Why do I call him stylish?………………come on how many Indian politician have ever made it on the cover page of ‘GQ’ magazine looking like our Indian version of ‘James Bond’. The fearless Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir looks suave even when dressed in Kadhi or a simple cotton kurta. He has a very demure sense of styling and knows well what looks good on him be it his attire, his hairstyle, everything is perfect even while he is campaigning. Hope that his sons also grow up to be as dashing as Omar and carry on the family legacy.

Saif Ali Khan

‘Chote Nawab’ as he is well-known within his royal family, should definitely give a lot of credit to his genes. It was a difficult path for Saif since people had a lot of expectation from the son of handsome Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and elegant Sharmila Tagore, but he has indeed made a standing for himself in Bollywood. Love his sense of style which is contemporary but has a very ‘regal’ air to it. The past decade one saw Saif grow to more mature roles with oodles of charm. His key style have been tailor fit suit for red carpet events, denim with T-shirt for casual wear, a blazer with jeans for a launch party, bandhgala for wedding occasions. He is open to experimenting with his look which is what makes his one of the most ‘Stylish Men’ in India. Whether we see Saif on the big screen or off he has never ever disappointed by wearing anything hideous. Unlike other actors, Saif has matured like wine and embraced his age gracefully rather than trying to look like a teenager.
