Manav Gangwani – ‘The Timeless Couturier’

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 30, 2011

A wise person once said “If fashion is wearable, then it is not fashion anymore”. Only few designers have been able to pull of this statement with success since there is a thin line between ‘Haute Couture’ and ‘Passe’. Every fashion week, I await so many designers to come up with something truly exceptional, sadly I end up being disappointed most of the times. But off late I do enjoy seeing a whole lot drama in Manav Gangwani’s collection when they are showcased on the runway. His designs often surprise me to some extent shock me, but the rarity of his designs is what I find very unique and am left wanting for more. His creations are definitely larger than life but that is what makes him stand out of the rest. Today he is one of the top-notch designer of our country……it is a fashion writer’s dream come true to write about Manav Gangwani. There might have been many interviews with Manav Gangwani before mine, but I promise to explore every facet of this designer’s world in my article.

Manav Gangwani is one of the most creative, innovative and promising designers in India, at a young age has carved a niche for himself in the world of fashion with his compellingly bold style statements. No one that I have seen, has ever made a modern age version of a lehenga so alluring on and off the runway like Manav.

While still in college, Manav recognized his strong inclination towards fashion designing. An Alumnus of Pearl Academy of Fashion, ………Manav began his career with ‘Carma’ in New Delhi in the year 1999. From then on there has been no looking back for Manav…… The Manav Gangwani label has become synonymous with luxury and style………….someone who has been able to single handedly create a ‘Brand’ out of sheer hardwork & knowledge.

He has designed the wedding trousseau of Lara Dutta and Raveena Tandon to name few…….Celebs like Karisma Kapoor, Rahul & Akshaye Khanna, Shruti Hassan, Jacqueline Fernandes, Zayed Khan, Soha Ali Khan, Sophie Chodhury, Dia Mirza have walked as Show stopper for Manav…………..and nearly every single Bollywood Celebrity has worn his creations on the red carpet. Delhi Couture Week, Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, IIFa and numerous other fashion weeks have seen Manav’s design on the runway……

He is also a, a multi-faceted designer who also paints comical canvases of people who inspire him in his spare time. He has painted for a number of celebrities like Karan Johar, Shahrukh Khan, Simi Garewal, Raveena Tandon Thadani, Amjad Ali Khan & family amongst many others. He has also combined with Sarod players Amaan Ali Khan  & Ayaan Ali Khan to release a music album ‘Passion’.Manav is also one of the most loved designer among his celebrity friends and has quite a fan following on ‘Twitter’………..’moi’ being one of the followers.

Manav Gangwani has recently opened his flagship store in the plush DLF Emporio, New Delhi. His recent ‘Timeless Affaire’ collection can be seen displayed at his store. I do wish to someday attend his creations on the runway and witness the drama and the bling in all it’s glory. But for now I am fortunate enough to get my chance to interact with the ‘Timeless Courtier’ himself………

A View inside Manav Gangwani’s Flagship Store at DLF Emporio

Interview With Designer Manav Gangwani

1.      Your recent Collection ‘Timeless Affaire’ is truly a work of Art…….what is the story behind this
‘fashion forward’ collection??

Manav Gangwani : I was Inspired by the Story of a warrior woman travelling through time going in and getting hold of her love and finding it and taking over it…. It’s my interpretation of a rendezvous between dream and reality transcending space and time, a fifth dimension solely entrenched in the realms of fantasy where desire merges with superstition to make dreams come alive.

2.      What is the toughest challenge that you face before showcasing a new collection at fashion weeks????

Manav Gangwani : It’s my intense compulsion, that I have to perform, I have to play it right, I have to leave my Audience Spellbound!!! And this at times is intensely stressful!!! Once, I move past this….& then of course the rest just works out….

3.      Saree or a Gown…….which one of these two makes your imagination run wild when it comes to designing?

Manav Gangwani : Tough Choice!!!!  Fashion is what makes my imagination run wild…..whatever the garment maybe!!
But if I have to make a choice, then it has to be sarees!!! There are so many ways you can play with the Drape,  it’s limitless…besides this, Blouses are my USP!!! I absolutely thrive on creating Stunning Blouses….

4.      How did you start off with fashion designing……… what inspired you to enter this field???

Manav Gangwani : Ever since I recollect my earliest thoughts, I have always wanted to be a designer. Clothes & Fashion have always been of great interest to me.

5.     You have designed outfits for the ‘Runway’ and made customized outfits for Celebrities…how would
you describe the difference between designing a collection and designing for a
particular person???

Manav Gangwani : When I design for the runway, it is a collection….I am exploring my Creativity as a Designer & as an Artist….While customizing outfits for Celebrities, However, I keep in mind What would accentuate the Celebrity’s personality, what the occasion is & of course, I am open to suggestions from them.

6.      Any Designer in particular whose work you admire???

Manav Gangwani : I admire Gudda [Rohit Bal] & “Abu & Sandeep” [Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla]

7.      You have dressed so many celebrities is there a particular ‘someone’ you would want to dress up on the red carpet?

Manav Gangwani : From Bollywood- Rekha of course!!! She is “The Diva” of Bollywood & I think she is breathtakingly gorgeous!!!From Hollywood – it has to be Angelina Jolie…..she has the most Stunning Figure & an indisputably alluring Face!!!I would also Love to Dress Oprah Winfrey…..Am completely taken by her personality & Elegance….. I admire her
tremendously!!!

8.      Wardrobe Essentials which you as a Designer feel every woman should have.

Manav Gangwani : A saree for sure!! It can be draped in different manners & in combination with options of blouses, can be worn to
suit various occasions.

9.      Heavy drapes, bold designs, crystal detail work, elaborate patterns, beautiful style of fabric layering …………What according to you is a ‘Manav Gangwani’ Signature style???

Manav Gangwani : Specifically all my Collections are known for their “Bling” Factor!! Exquisite Swarovski  Crystal Detailing & Intricate cutworks are the Signature for “Manav Gangwani”

10.     You have also launched a new flagship store in DLF Emporio Mall, what’s next for the label ‘Manav Gangwani’?

Manav Gangwani : There are various projects in the pipeline, which I shall reveal as they are finalized….However, to mention a couple, I am opening my Showrooms in Dubai & Mumbai early next year.

11.     Manav’s personal style mantra would be……….

Manav Gangwani : Blue Jeans & White shirts, accessorized with a pop of color in the form of shoes & shades!!! I am addicted to them!!!

Lakme ‘Absolute’ by Manish Malhotra

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 26, 2011

Manish Malhotra was the designer for the Finale of Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive. The colourful collection had loadsof lehengas and Anarkalis………..wish he would have added more sarees to this collection. But I do like the menswear designs which are very sleek. Here is your look of his recent Collection.

Celebrities at Lakme Fashion Week

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 23, 2011

Celebrities and fashion fraternity have always been like ‘Ying & Yang’……..one is incomplete without the other. Celebs have graced the runway every season since the inception of Fashion week, but what I find more interesting is to see them off the ramp and on the red carpet. That is exactly when my devil’s horn come out and mind spins into action mode. Let’s catch up on what the celebrities wore for the big event:

One got to see Karisma Kapoor on 2 days at LFW where she had come in to cheer for her neice and sister Kareena. Seen wearing a white ruffle collar top with blue denims and a b/w bag…….no one can do the basic white shirt better than Karisma. As I always say, Karisma is all about ‘Class’ and she reflect a good one in the above outfit…….

Though her look on the LFW -Finale Day could have been better since the top was more of a dress combined with skinny jeans………..I missed the glamour factor in this outfit. This one appears more of what one can expect Karisma to wear on a casual day……….for a Fashion Week, I wished she would have put on a more alluring attire to woo people.

Twinkle Khanna also attended the LFW where she was seen in a black & white attire……….nothing much to ponder over but I do like the ‘Scorpio’ brooch that she had accessoried her top with. Rest was too casual for a Fashion Week………ladies please dress up a bit more fashionable.

Neil Nitin Mukesh who came in dressed in a suit designed by Designer ‘Narendra Kumar’ looked undoubtedly handsome. The suit is all shimmer but other things are kept matt which works well here……..I am never in favour of men sporting a stubble on the red carpet, but in Neil’s case I make an exception.

Queenie Dhody had daughter Tiara Dhody for company at the recent LFW………..now here is the truth, they both look like they are best buddies dressed in similar style, unfortunately the hemline of Queenie is shorter than her daughters, talk about age-appropriate dressing…………..I am literally bored of seeing Queenie do the short dresses at every red carpet event………..need a change.

And I at last get my wish of seeing Ms. Dhody in pants coupled with a ruffle top and a ‘Hermes’ belt to grab the attention to that slim waistline. Like it for sure………..hope to see Queenie in more of these in future.

Also seen at Sabyasachi’s showcasing of his collection was Vidya Balan. Vidya is obviously wearing a ‘Sabyasachi’ creation. The peach blouse with a white saree reminds me of vintage fashion which a timeless beauty like her can carry off gracefully………though I am not a fan of her black potli bag……but that is just me.

Katrina Kaif choose a ‘Manish Malhotra’ creation when it was time for her to attend the LFW. We have seen this same look at the Filmfare awards where more than half of the actresses were dressed in floor length anarkalis. Not a fan back then, not a fan now either.

The ever so ‘Hot’ Sridevi confirms her star status every single time she steps on the red carpet……….despite the fact that she has not had a movie come out for more than a decade but she can certainly give new comers a run for their moolah. Sridevi attended Sabyasachi’s show in a Sabyasachi saree………..’Divine’ is one word for this ‘Diva’.

Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive – Day 5

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 22, 2011

Here is a quick glimpse at Kareena Kapoor walking as showstopper for Manish Malhotra…….more coming soon.

My pick of the day 5 at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2011 are………….

Shagufta Quamar

‘Moksha – The Pursuit of Inner Peace’ had a collection of bags which had images of Lord Buddha and Shri Krishna on them…….I liked the funky colourful bags which were a variety of them……clutch, sling bags, handbags, potlis………the collection had it all. Styling was kept simple with emphasis on the creations only………I kinda of liked the rudraksh mala and other neckpieces which were contemporary. My Verdict : Creative work which is funky……..young, hip and trendy………I like it.

Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive – Day 4

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 21, 2011

Our pick for Day 4…..

Neeta Lulla

Neeta Lulla presented her latest Bridal collection at LFW……………..one got to see bright reds, orange, browns, golden beige, blue colours with Andhra Pradesh’s famous painting form ‘Hastkala Kalamkari’ on the silhouettes. I am always for the idea of incorporating Indian Art in the creations…..Neeta has sure done us proud on that front. The lehengas, fish tail skirts, sarees, corset, jackets, cholis, short kurtis, Anarkalis were all heavily embellished with golden zardosi, kundan & velvet. The outfits were very regal but there was too much of detail work in few outfits which I felt could have been avoided. Prachi Desai opened the show for Neeta Lulla in a floor length Anarkali.

My Verdict : I liked the richness of her detail work and the concept of Indian Art form being used in creating an outfit. The floor length Anarkalis were passe but I do give my vote to short kurtis and the fish tail lehengas.

Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive – Day 3

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 20, 2011

The Designers who rocked Day 3 at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2011………….

Pria Kataria Puri

‘Persian Punk’ the latest presentation from Designer Pria Kataria Puri was more demure than her Resort 2011 collection. The signature Kaftans, kurtis, cocktail dresses, evening wear…………had more sharpness in their style……emphasis was given on wired sleeves, fit of the silhouette, minimal sequin detail, loads of jewel prints, addition of tassels & fringe. It was an extension of her earlier collection ‘Marrakesh’ ……….I adore the colour sunset yellow used in this collection which looked so alluring on the runway.  Styling was neat with absolute emphasis given on the outfits & jewellery. The jewels were ‘The Cappuccino Collection’ who are also the official partners with LFW this season. Actors Arjan Bajwa and Neha Sharma were Pria’s show stopper for the evening………..Arjan walked the runway in a printed Kaftan combined with trousers while Neha was seen in a short one shoulder outfit. My pick has to be the handsome Arjan in PKP Kaftan……….uber hot. My Verdict : Pria’s collection has always been unique w.r.t to the prints and the style that always makes the wearer stand out of the crowd.  Wearable yet elegant flowy dresses are a clear winner in this collection.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee

With the ongoing movement in India for ‘Jan Lokpal, designer Sabysachi seems to have drawn inspiration from history of our country. The early 1920s & 1930s looks were captured & showcased in this collection, the culture of the north-west India reflected in the silhouettes……….thank god for the return of short kurtis……….I was absolutely sick & tired of the floor length Anarkalis. The collection consisted of kurtis, Patiala salwars, jackets, dupattas, sarees, shirts, scarves and handbags………it was a surprise to see men wearing Anarkalis but Sabyasachi took the cake by combining the same with jackets, churidhars and shawls………Velvet took centre stage amongst fabric used in this collection. The signature Kashmiri detail work which has been seen in his earlier works too, is commendable as it keeps this rich craftsmanship alive in our country. The show closed with the tunes of ‘Vande Mataram’ which itself left a ‘feel good’ factor amongst the audience. My Verdict : Vintage is back in ‘Vogue’ and the credit goes to Sabyasachi. As predicted earlier, the short kurtis will be fashionable in future seasons. Sabyasachi can never go wrong when it comes to presenting something ‘out of the box’.

Shyamal & Bhumika

The bridal collection is something most designers refrain from these days………maybe due to the amount of work involved in creating a bridal trousseau. The detail work, the rich fabric, the embellishments, the draping style………..the work is enormous. This season too they did not disappoint me. They had incorporated embroidery like zardosi, gotta work in their designs with velvet, net, chiffons, silks………….Indian Bridalwear is all about it’s richness, one got to see that in their creations. The show stoppers were Actress Hema Malini & Esha Deol both looking splendid in signature ‘Shyamal & Bhumika’ designs. My Verdict : Few of the designs were seen last season but overall the collection was beautiful.

Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive – Day 2

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 19, 2011

Here is your glimpse at Day 2 of Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2011. IFP will only be showcasing the designs which caught our attention and were worth discussing.

Anita Dongre

Anita Dongre presented yet another colourful bridal collection in which she had captured the prints and fabrics from the vibrant states of our country. Anita seems to draw a lot of inspiration from the beautiful Rajasthan…………….the rich work reflects in her ‘Timeless’ collection…………Bandhej, gotta & patti work, ikat, brocades…………..it had all the elements to wow the audience. The equally liked the one shoulder dresses and blouses paired with lehenga skirts. But the only thing that distracted me from this beautiful collection were the bags strapped around the waist like ‘kamarbandh’………….seen this in JJ Valaya’s earlier works………..honestly not a big fan and never would understand why would a women wear such a hideous accessory over a heavy embellished saree. Nonetheless the outfits were signature ‘Anita Dongre’ style……………..wearable, affordable, elegant and very contemporary. My Verdict : All for the flowy skirts but definitely not a fan of the outfits wherein velvet was incorporated. Felt it was too over-whelming when combined with prints.

Narendra Kumar

‘Fly me to the Moon’ Frank Sinatra sang this wonderful song………….and Narendra Kumar took inspiration from it to create this classic collection. Of course Narendra Kumar focused on menswear this time around with jackets, blazers, tuxedo and suits for the handsome one. It was a pleasant surprise to see the ever so graceful Kabir Bedi walk the runway as the show stopper for Narendra Kumar………such poise, such grace………..only few men age well & Kabir is definitely a handsome face rarely found at this age. The rich fabric, the royal colours, the subtle detail work were commendable……though not a fan of cropped pants in bright shades of red, pink & peach. Call me old-fashioned but full length fitted pants are ‘Couture’……………..I think the show stopper proved my point. The colour palette was inspired by F.Scott Fitzgerald’s literary work – The Great Gatsby. The lush emerald-green, deep sapphire and midnight blues, wine, light pink, neutrals and ubiquitous “black tie”. Authentic luxury and decadence of the golden era is displayed through the predominant use of variety of silks and other fine fibres; Dupion silk, opulent silk velvet, textures and patterned silk, smooth and lustrous Ari silk. Textured hand-loom silk and brocade adds richness to the collection, whilst combining with traditional Indian handicraft with a contemporary clean-line silhouette. My Verdict : Fabulous jackets & tuxedos………they were absolutely unique………..loved the fit and the rich vintage look.

Nachiket Barve

‘The Golden Hour’ by Nachiket Barve had a pretty impressive line of outfits in vibrant hues…………sponsored by DHL, Nachiket successfully incorporated the colours of DHL in his designs. Yet the ensemble looked stylish and very fashion forward. The blending of colours, the layering effect, minimal detail work actually caught my eye for its freshness. Absolutely loved the way hot pinks turned into sunshine yellows………the saree draped in a contemporary form underneath a corset was definitely one of its kind.  The flowy Georgette looked equally stunning on the runway. My Verdict : Perfect synchronization of colours, cut & fit. So far I like this collection for its vibrant colours. I guess one might get to see a lot of Nachiket’s designs on the red carpet in future.

Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive – Day 1

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 18, 2011

Since my childhood I used to hear that the clothes worn by the models on the ramp are not wearable in reality………..but I am amazed how the designers have proved such myths wrong……….today one can wear any design off the runway and look like a million bucks. This fashion season, one might get to see loads of festive and ethnic attire on the runway……….I am eagerly waiting for many high-profile designer creations since these designers are the ones to set a benchmark for the future in fashion. Here is your exclusive look at what each designer had to offer.

Jatin Varma

Jatin Varma’s new creation ‘Paparazzi’ inspired by the red carpet glamour. To set the mood before the show, a line of photographers clicked guests on the red carpet as they made their way to their seats. The show started to the sounds of cameras going “click click”!! Fitted gowns, flowy dresses created from silk chiffons, lace, net and sequin embellishments. The drapes were beautiful…….. better than his earlier collection presented at LFW Resort 2011, the colours were soothing to the eye and thankfully not garish. The use of square sequin details was subtle and appropriate………..gave a very fashion forward look to the silhouette.  Jatin Verma will also be presenting his collection at ‘Pret-A-Porter’ show to held in Paris.  My verdict : Wearability takes browny points from me, the collection was stylish, very feminine………… I am all for the peach, turquise blue, golden beige colours along with the animal prints.

Payal Singhal

Payal Singhal presented a very festive collection which reminded me so much about the Mughal Era…………..the outfits were very regal which any Indian women loves to wear. The bridal collection consisted of Anarkalis, short kurtis combined with patiala salwars and churidhars, lehengas, sarees all in pastels with metallic detail work for that touch of shimmer. The beautiful outfits created from fabrics like silks, tulles, brocade in sky blues, melon greens, blush rose were mesmerizing with the heavy sequin embellishments. Payal Singhal also unveiled the first look of her festive wear line for young girls, with Alea Motwane (Karisma Kapoors neice) and Rysa Pandey (Bhavna & Chunkey Pandeys’ daughter) walking the ramp dressed in the kidswear line. Singer/Dancer Shibani Dandekar was the show stopper for Payal. My verdict : I am in ‘AWE’ of this alluring collection. Two thumbs up from IFP for such a beautiful piece of ethnic work.

 Archana Kochhar

Archana Kochhar ‘s recent collection had loads of black and white with a hint of colour here & there…………what I absolutely loved were the skirts. The sequin long skirts did remind me of seeing this last year’s fashion week but Archana managed to make it look glorious by adding the sequin details and combining few pieces with a bolero style jackets. Though I am not that impressed with the too much of layering on the bodice part of an outfit………….that felt a bit too heavy, would make the wearer look bulky. Miss India International 2011 Ankita Shorey was the show stopper for Ms. Kochhar. My verdict : I am more in favour of the traditional attire than the western wear. I feel Archana has been able to give a contemporary look to the so called lehenga combined with shirts & jackets.

JJ Valaya

Eminent designer JJ Valaya showcased his recent work ‘Tasveer’ inspired by the images JJ Valaya has captured behind the lens as a photographer. This collection was also showcased at Delhi Couture Week last month. I love the ‘Alika’ jackets which are unique….a design so rarely seen in Indian fashion beautifully combined with sarees & lehengas. The detail work is so rich, it’s like seeing a work of art, the colours are so festive and the drapes need no comment at all. The menswear was even better with the subtle detail work. The sheer opulence of his work gets a bow from me……My Verdict : For people with a good taste, will definitely love JJ Valaya’s Collection. To see more of his collection click here.

The Lakme Fashion Week or LFW as I will be addressing in the posts opened with Rohit Bal’s show. The collection aptly titled as ‘Shaanti’ was presented at Tote. The collection was also showcased at Delhi Couture week which took place last week. I was all praise then……………and I am all praise now. The magnificient whites blended with bronze detials & colours which one gets to see cross nature. The floral detail work was indeed unique. The show stopper was but of course the handsome Arjun Rampal. Here is your look at the beautiful collection.

Citrine by Purvi Dhruv [August 2011]

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 6, 2011

‘Citrine Jewellery’ by Purvi Dhruv

A bubbly, young girl writes to me about her experience in designing………she seems to be bursting with loads of ideas,my guess was that she was talkative and fun to be with. But after looking at her collection I can call her ‘talented’ as well. Let me introduce you to my ‘Find of the Month’ for August is Citrine Jewellery by Purvi Dhruv.

As said earlier, this page is all about the upcoming designers and their creations. Purvi hails from Bangalore and founded ‘Citrine’ in 2010…….yes she is new but not as new in this field as one might think. She got to learn the tricks of the trade from an early age and now runs the show on her own. I do have a soft corner for Indian inspired jewellery and the traditional designs, hence posting ‘Citrine Jewellery’ as my pick for the month seemed the right thing to do.

Purvi creates her beautiful jewellery with precious & semi-precious gemstones set in 24kt gold plated silver. Her creations are worn by Hollywood celebrities like Jennifer Love Hewitt and in India have been seen on Saina Nehwal posing for Hi! Blitz magazine.

Citrine has a range of earrings, pendants and necklaces to choose from. Purvi has creatively named each of her collection…..Enigma, Aarnaa, Myrah, Ashkaa……..you simply get lost in her world of creations. Hoops, tear drops, jhumkaas, chandeliers, studds……….you name it, she’s got the designs in her kitty. The impressive range starts from Rs 800 onwards……..IFP will keep you updated for the ‘Citrine Jewellery’ exhibits held in your city.

I also got a chance to know the designer behind this label and I am sure my interview will tell you more about this young talented designer.

Q & A with Purvi Dhruv – Creator of ‘Citrine Jewellery’

1) Like I ask every budding designer, I would like to know your inspiration behind your creation ‘Citrine Jewelry’??

Purvi: My family is involved in manufacturing chemicals used in the jewellery industry and also have a casting jewellery plant. I used to often drop by at my factory in my free time as i was intrigued by the manufacturing process. I used to see the designs being manufactured and frankly wasn’t very impressed. Thus I started taking interest in the designing and gradually started getting my own designs manufactured. They were very well received in by the showrooms where we used to supply. But again I wanted to experiment with the designs, use different textures, materials etc which was not possible with gold. Also a lot of my acquaintances who had seen my designs in gold really appreciated them but could not buy them because of the ever rising gold prices. So I tried a few pieces in silver and they sold like hot cakes. Then there was no looking back. The Citrine gem stone is actually a cheaper substitute for a yellow sapphire, which is very expensive. And I personally love the Citrine colour.

2) Was there any formal training involved before starting your own label??

Purvi:I have done a basic gemology and diamond grading course. But most of my training was on the job. The karigars whom I interact so closely with, have taught me the different types of settings, finishes, textures etc.

3) Any Designer that you idolize or whose creations make you go ‘WOW’???

Purvi: I do like Amrapali.

4) Was it difficult at first to start this brand since there are numerous other designers out there???

Purvi:Not really. From the beginning my designs have been well received. My jewellery ranges from contemporary to Traditional. I think my designs have been appreciated over the time and i have my regular set of clients who keep on coming back to me. I also do lot of customization and also use gemstones, beads etc that my clients have to offer. I try to give the same finish as gold in terms of setting, quality of gemstone, pearls, only the base metal is silver instead of gold. So the piece of jewellery looks just as it is crafted in gold, but actually u are getting it very very cheap. Also my jewellery is very competitively priced as compared to Amrapali or any other brand in the same bracket..

5) Your creations have been worn by Jennifer Love Hewitt, is there any particular celebrity you wish to see wearing ‘Citrine’??

Purvi: Yeah. Deepika Padukone. I think my designs are very indo-western. and Deepika is the perfect epitome of the east-west amalgamation. I think she will carry my pieces beautifully.

6) Out of all your creations, is there any which might be your favourite???

Purvi:Every new line that comes out is my favourite…The new line Enigma, which is inspired by the Venetian Mask was a big hit. I had crafted a few pieces using the Murano glass that was sourced from Venice itself. I think that was kind of my favourite.

7) ‘Citrine’ is well known in Bangalore, what are your plans to take your label to the next level?

Purvi:I am in talks with a leading store chain in Singapore, and my jewellery is already retailed in the US under the name RKG D’Zines. A cousin of mine does shows on my behalf  in Ahmedabad and Mumbai. Infact I have one lined up at Cymroza Art Gallery, Breach Candy, Mumbai on the 18th and 19th of July[IFP had put the same in it’s upcoming events section in July] Anyone can order online through my facebook.

8) And any plans of participating in Fashion weeks???

Purvi:Yes very open to the idea.

India International Jewellery Week [IIJW] – Day 5

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 5, 2011

The Grand Finale had alot of shine to it………..courtesy the Diamonds and the Celebs of course. IIJW paid tribute to ‘Boucheron’ – Luxury Jewellery from Paris.

Sonam Kapoor who is the ‘Face of IIJW’ walked the runway wearing a beautiful red gown by Shane & Falguni Peacock with a ‘Boucheron’ neckpiece. The neckpiece is designed by Shaune Leane on the 150th Anniversary Celebration of ‘Boucheron’. As for Sonam………the florals in her styling made her look even more fabulous. The hair, the outfit and the jewels……………I think I am gonna faint as they are so perfect…………….

Mommy-to-be Lara Dutta also made an appearance on the ramp in a Shane & Falguni Peacock outfit in baby pink colour…………..the length of the lehenga is a downer but loved to see Lara glow in those jewels.

Also Walking the ramp was Sonu Sood………though I am a bit surprised to see him oon the runway wearing heavy gold jewellery, but must say that he definitely got us to see the jewels worn on his barely there vest……… 😉 Now who says men don’t wear jewellery…….

India International Jewellery Week – Day 4

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 4, 2011

I was eagerly waiting for day 4 where designer Alpana Gujral would showcase her recent collectionand IFP had interviewed Ms. Gujral in the month of May 2011. Check out our interview with her at this link. As for the Jewellery Week here is your look as to who walked the runway…….

Isha Kopikar who was also seen walking the runway last year, was the show stopper for ‘Kashi Jewellers’……………decked top to bottom in diamond, she did look every bit of an’Apsara’………….the jewels is what we like the most. The overdressing part was certainly not required.

Perizaad Zorabian was in her element in the cool blue dress……………where women were donning traditional ensemble, Perizaad looked every bit sensuous in those side swept waves and the alluring contemporary neck piece. Me liking it very much………

Feroze Gujral walked the runway for sister-in-law Alpana Gujral at IIJW……….the theme of Alpana’s new collection was ‘The Enchanted Garden’ inspired by the beautiful gardens of the Mughal Era. The jewels were set in gold with designs like Minakari and Jadau. Feroze was styled in a regal manner like a ‘Queen’ and presented the jewels in the most enchanting way. On the whole, I am a fan of the jewels and of course of Feroze……… 🙂

Malaika Arora Khan represented Birichand Ghanshyamdas jewellers on the runway in a flaming red gown and ruby-diamond encrusted jewels………………the styling of her hair, the subtle make-up and proper emphasis given to the jewels scores browny points from me. I felt that it was approriate to choose Malaika as the ‘show stopper’ since she has been a model  for so many years and the elegant styling thankfully did not overshadow the jewels. Two thumbs up for Malaika and the jewels.

India International Jewellery Week [IIJW] – Day 3

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 3, 2011

More beauties on the runway………….I wonder when will I ever get a chance to walk the ramp……….just kiddin.

The original ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ girl Zeenat Aman along with Mahima Chaudhary walked the runway for Swanshukla Jewellers at IIJW. Zeenat who even after these years looked ‘oh-so-elegant’………..the jewels, the styling, the Anarkali were very beautiful but the shoes!!! Now that is an entirely different story……..pairing a pair of flat Mary Janes with Anarkali……..not a good combination. There are so many amazing strappy flat footwear out there and this is the ‘ever so elegant’ Zeenat Aman………..Stylists you could have done a better job. As for Zeenat, we are, were and always be your die-hard fans……….. 🙂

Mahima Chaudhary did look pretty in a saree…now only if her long hair had not hidden half of her jewellery.

Amrita Rao was the show stopper for Agni Jewellers were in she wore a heavy embellished neck piece on an off shoulder pink gown. She did look prety but the clothes at IIJW are just a mood spoiler. Please get some good designers and stylists to add the glam factor to this show. Styling does make a world of difference.

Please do note the way those black shoes stood out under Amrita’s pink attire……the length of the outfit was the point which marred the entire look.

Zarine Khan made her presence felt on the third day of the Jewellery week where she was the show stopper for Dwarkadas Chandumal Jewellers……..and I am more for her black gown look than this one…..the ill-fitted sheer corset does no justice to her…….the diamond & sapphire jewels are another thing though.

India International Jewellery Week [IIJW] – Day 2

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 2, 2011

Day 1 starts with so much of Hoo hala………….hope the same is continued till the end of the jewellery week……here is your look at which celebrity made their presence felt on day 2.

Zarine Khan walked as a show stopper for Johra Jewels wearing this magnificent diamond and ruby encrusted set. She did look pretty in this get up…………..

The ever so elegant Hema Malini also walked the ramp for the label ‘Scintillating’ but to my dismay I think she was dressed and styled in hurry……..plus the jewellery is so not in sync with the outfit…………..sigh.

If given a chance I would have styled Hema Malini in Kundan & jadau with that saree or with that jewellery would have picked up a saree in black or a brighter hue. The blue colour with golden detail simply makes the jewellery disappear.

‘Singham’ star Kajal Agarwal also joined the list of celebrities walking at IIJW………KAjal walked as show stopper for CVM Exports………I think she did look cute for a first timer on the runway.
