Red Carpet at TOIFA 2013

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on April 7, 2013

Times of India Film Awards or better known as TOIFA was held this weekend in Vancouver, Canada. IFP gets you a glimpse at the red carpet of TOIFA and how our stars fared on it.

TOIFA-ASHABHI

Abhishek & Aishwarya pose on the red carpet at TOIFA complimenting each other’s style in Indian wear. Aishwarya was dressed in a green anarkali by ‘Sabyasachi’ while Abhishek was spotted in a bandhgala. As a couple they looked nice but I still believe this look would have been much more glamorous.

TOIFA-Nargis

Nargis Fakhri dressed in a glittery ‘Komal Sood’ gown posed in style. On someone else the gown would have been a total wash-out but Nargis looked ‘Hot’…………..especially the fuchsia pink lips.

Toifa-Pri2

Priyanka Chopra dazzled in a black & golden ‘Arpan Vohra’ outfit at TOIFA………..this one is definitely one of her best red carpet looks. The dress is sexy, her side swept hairstyle is fashionable and the make-up is beautiful. Wish Priyanka would continue these amazing red carpet appearances in future too.

TOIFA-Neha

Neha Dhupia knows how to work a ‘Sabyasachi’ outfit. IFP loves her military inspired look which was definitely a tough one to carry but Neha pulled this look off with sheer elegance. The pulled back hair, flawless make-up and minimal accessories…….. 🙂 🙂

TOIFA celbration

Ileana D’cruz shares a joke with Prabhudeva on the red carpet………here I actually felt that Prabhudeva looked way better than Ileana who is usually dressed perfect. Maybe this was her day off………………not liking the gown or styling of this look. 😦

TOIFA celbration

Ranbir Kapoor has finally heard IFP’s plead to woo us on the red carpet…………….the man looked dapper in a three piece suit and trimmed stubble. This is definitely how we want a star to be seen on the red carpet. IFP has got at least this wish fulfilled………sigh!!

TOIFA-SG

Shahrukh & Gauri Khan wanted to paint the town red………..well at least their appearance did feel like that. Shahrukh finally opted for some colour by wearing a maroon dinner jacket while Gauri wore a ‘Tarun Tahiliani’ saree. I do like  Gauri’s hairstyle which is a refreshing change & it works with this outfit.

TOIFA-Aditi

Aditi Rao Hydari in a ‘Gauri & Nainika’ gown could have been a match made in fashion heaven…………..unfortunately the reverse happened. I cannot pin point if it was the shiny fabric or the colour that did this look in……..wish the gown would have been in fuchsia colour. Maybe it would have worked……………at least for now this look spelt disaster.

TOIFA-Anushka

Anushka Sharma wore a suit again on the red carpet…………not that IFP has any complains since she looked so good with those hair bangs & red lips. Anushka was the ‘Host’ for the evening along with Ranbir Kapoor so I think they had a dress code to follow for this event……….but a fabulous girl like her deserves to be seen in couture gowns & Indian-wear………there is always a next time.

Red Carpet at the Filmfare Awards 2013

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on January 21, 2013

58th Filmfare Awards were held at Yashraj studios in Mumbai. Ranbir Kapoor & Vidya Balan walked away with the leading actor awards, yet again. Annu Kapoor & Anushka Sharma took home the filmfare for their supporting roles while Barfi was awarded the ‘Best Film’ award. Many congratulations to the winners………….now getting back to our fashion business, Filmfare Awards are a big deal for fashionistas as it sets the tone for the year ahead in terms of celebrity fashion. IFP takes you through the red carpet of this event & reviews the fashion.

Filmfare-Deepika2

Deepika Padukone in a demure Prabal Gurung…….with a body like hers I feel she did absolute justice to this outfit. On anyone else this gown would have looked trashy but Deepika wowed me…….the fit, the cut [especially the cut work], sheer draping,  no accessories, coral lips and hair tied up. Deepika is back to rule the red carpet for sure. Love it…….. 🙂

Filmfare-Ileana

Ileana D’cruz wanted to shine for the big nite…..she did bag the ‘Promising Newcomer’ Award for her role in ‘Barfi’. This ‘Roberto Cavalli’ outfit reminds me of the glittery 1970s where sequins were very fashionable. Not a fan of this outfit, but Ileana did manage to tone the look down with tasteful jewellery, clutch & shoes  to match.

Filmfare-Ranbir2

Ranbir Kapoor dressed in all black three piece suit which did look vintage especially the button detail on the jacket. I wish Ranbir would surprise us with much more fresher looks especially in Indianwear. The stubble & the all black attire is turning a bit boring. He is a fine actor of this generation, but would love to see him rock the red carpet too. SIGH!! 😦 😦

Filmfare-Priyanka

Priyanka Chopra has been wearing alot of colour lately but never expected her to wear something so loud. The colour with so much of glossy sheen was simply over the top……..add the trail of the gown & we  have a Prom Queen. Hate this look on Priyanka though neck up she did look very pretty but the outfit is altogether a different story. 😦 😦 😦

Filmfare-Alia

Alia Bhatt making a graceful appearance in ‘Manish Malhotra’ lehenga in which she looked pretty. But why opt for something so safe, why not experiment a bit with your style???

Filmfare-Anushka

Anushka Sharma made me remembered the 1960s era where the flower power was on its rise and the winged eye-liner trend at its peak. The canary yellow colour is lust worthy and the entire looks spells vintage. She is wearing a ‘Victoria Beckham’ gown. L-O-V-E in capital for this look………that aside,  Anushka would look wonderful with a fuller figure though……what say people???

Filmfare-Chitra

Breaking away from the conventional lehenga & anarkali style, Chitrangada Singh made me proud in this ‘Anand Kabra’ outfit. The side swept braid, vintage jewellery and the colour all get browny points from IFP. Chitrangada has been a risk taker on screen as well off it and her style shows positive signs of the same.

Filmfare-Minnisha

Minnisha Lamba in a Krishna Mehta pastel outfit………….with the lack of some bright colour this look was a total wash-out on Minnisha. I wish she would have added the colour in form of jewellery or bright coloured lipstick. I did see this collection of Krishna on the runway and also liked it. But not liking the way this outfit was styled on Minnisha. Sigh…:-(

Filmfare-Neha

Neha Dhupia wore a ‘Victoria Beckham’ outfit in black with hair accesories to highlight her look. I do like this look but wish she would have added some more drama to her look. The plain outfit of hers is like a canvas which Neha could have made look a lot more glamorous with addition of a belt to match her jewellery.  Nonetheless simple look works as well.

Filmfare-Yami

Yami Gautam in a ‘Tarun Tahiliani’ pastel lehenga…………waist up she does look pretty but it is the detailing on lehenga which was not needed. The corset type choli would have looked better if it was paired with a plain net lehenga. But hey, that is just me……….do you like this look of hers???

Filmfare-MAdhuri2

Madhuri Dixit Nene went all glam in this shimmer blue ‘Alberto Makali’    …………..she has taken a risk opting for this gown and unfortunately this one comes across as too flashy than classy for me.  I wish she would have given one of those ‘Dior’ looks in which she looks heavenly………shimmer in subtle proportion looks good but too much can spoil the entire look.

Filmfare-PArineeti

Parineeti Chopra seems to be taking a liking to Gothic looks coz her ‘Rajat Tangri’ dress goes feel dark to me. On Parineeti the dress is a misfit…………just not feeling this satin attire. Wish Parineeti would have opted for a more colourful appearance that go all black in satin. I find this look totally dated. 😦 😦

Filmfare-Sridevi

Sridevi in coral ‘Alberta Ferretti’ gown is a surprise for me……..fortunately it is a pleasant one. Though this might not be her best looks till date but the elegant manner in which she carries off this look is superb. Pairing the outfit with a Judith Leiber which works well with her outfit, IFP is happy to see Sridevi take risks. 🙂 🙂

Filmfare-Vidya2

Vidya Balan in her trademark ‘Sabyasachi’ saree posed along with her hubby Siddharth Roy Kapur. Though we have seen the check saree on her earlier too in a different design, I wish Vidya would opt for something out of the designer’s new collection. It is boring to see her don the same look while taking no risk. 😦

Filmfare-Raveena

A cocktail saree in black & green looks beautiful………top it off with hairstyle with tight curls and you have a recipe for style disaster. That is exactly what Raveena Tandon did to this look.  I do like her outfit but her hair……..please someone tell her hairstylist to have some mercy.  😦

Filmfare-Urmila

Urmila Matondkar in her ‘Manish Malhotra’ style did manage to look good after a lonnnnnnggg time. She absolutely had me on the colour of her outfit plus the styling was in sync with her attire. Absolutely like this one 🙂

Filmfare-Aditi

Aditi Rao Hydari went the saree route in this Gaurav Gupta……….she looked amazing in this grey shimmer saree that gave a very gown like feel to the look. She kept the look understated with minimum accessories………one of the few looks given by Aditi. 🙂

Filmfare-Shahana

Amongst the celebrities who opted for traditional attire, Shahana Goswami was a delight to see. Dressed in a ‘Sabyasachi’ black lehenga, she did look glamorous and perfectly styled for the evening. The hair pinned up in a bun, the red lipstick and only earrings look works for me………what about you???

Celebrity Sightings this week

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 21, 2011

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Baby Shower

Jaya Bachchan welcomed every guest for Aishwarya’s baby shower which was held at the ‘Bachchan’ residence in Juhu. She was seen wearing this beautiful pastel-golden motif saree [my guess Abu-Sandeep]. Love the saree though the hair needed a bit of help…………..on second thought since it was an event at her residence, so whatever complaints I have gets compensated by her graceful saree…….:-)

Bipasha Basu was seen wearing a ‘Manish Malhotra’ creation in pink & white…………..she did look gorgeous, love her hair but what was an eye-sore was Karan Johar dressed in oversized denim shirt and pants. A kurta would have done better work……………but the ceremony was meant for ladies, so can let Karan go off the hook for now.

Twinkle Khanna definitely knows how to dress for any damn occasion…………she looks stunning in this Abu-Sandeep designed kurti-churidhar along with a ‘Chanel’ bag and peep-toes. Two thumbs up for Twinkle who has always opts for classic pieces. A color like this would have not worked otherwise on someone else……………Twinkle simply rocks in it.

Neetu Kapoor also came in dressed in Abu-Sandeep outfit, Do I need to say anything about this beautiful woman who still looks charming at any given time…………….elegance, grace and poise……….Neetu surely has it all.

Also spotted at the event were Neelam and Manyata Dutt…………Neelam looks pretty in a blue-green kurti-churidhar, I do like Manyata’s peach saree but neck up the story is entirely different. Wish Manyata would opt for a new hairdo and avoid chunky jewelry even if they cost alot of moolah.

Designer Neeta Lilla along with her daughter Nishka in their own creations. The Kalamkari saree from Neeta’s recent collection looks amazing on her plus the chunky neckpiece works well with the outfit. Though wish to have a better pic of Nishka……

Poonam Sinha Also made an appearance at the ceremony in a green saree combined with a purple blouse…………Poonam has surely made color blocking work for her. Like this simple look of hers…….

It is not so often that one gets to see Saira Bano at events, but she did come to the ceremony in a red saree looking graceful as ever. I strongly feel that today’s actress lack elegance which was seen in yester-year actresses. Sigh……..

Spice Mobile Launch

Sonam Kapoor who is the brand ambassador of ‘Spice Mobiles’ was seen at it’s recent launch of mobile phones. Clean lines with this dress which she prepped up with a blue bib necklace & braided hair. She managed to look flawless especially after her black gown debacle. Good to see her bounce back with such a charming look.

Rockstar Promotions

Ranbir Kapoor and co-star Nargis Fakri have been busy promoting their upcoming movie ‘Rockstar’ in various cities. Seen here in a more traditional avatar of patiala salwar and kurta on both of them. If I had to pick one look it will have to be Ranbir’s attire in a khadi kurta with silk salwar and the ‘Ray-bans’. As for Ms. Fakri, the short A-line kurti with a patiala salwar is just too much of mess happening.

Johnnie Walker Jet Black party

Caught Bipasha basu partying the night with pal Deanne Pandey at Johnnie Walker Jet Black party held in Mumbai. Bipasha wore a Falguni-Shane Peacock creation in black which was the party theme color. She looks smoking hot in this sexy attire…….all heart for this look.

Schokolaade Launch at ‘Anita Dongre’ flagship store

‘Schokolaade’ desert cafe was launched at Anita Dongre’s flagship store in Bandra with Abhishek Bachchan as the ‘guest of honor’ along with celebs like Sangeeta Bijlani, Sonali Bendre, Sameera Reddy, Gayatri Oberoi, Pria Kataria Puri and host of others. In case you are tired shopping at the store, hop in at Schokolaade for a quick munch…….:-)

Abhishek Bachchan looke dapper in white shirt with denims but I wish he would appoint a stylist who tells him that a stubble is not always fashionable.

GQ India Best Dressed Men 2011

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on June 14, 2011

GQ India has just come out with the list of ‘Best Dressed Men 2011’ in it’s recent issue and also held a party at Hyatt. Let’s see if the men on the list are actually ‘Best Dressed’ or not………

Ranbir Kapoor & Prateik

Seen here are the upcoming actors striking a pose with Che Kurrien, Editor of GQ…………….both of them have been voted as the Best Dressed Men for the year 2011………..While I do agree with GQ picking up Ranbir Kapoor as ‘Best Dressed’, Prateik is definitely far from being it. Anyways blazers over denim is a look I don’t dig that much…………plus with folded hems of the pants & rolled up blazer sleeves, he looks more of a ‘Street walker’ to me than a Celebrity. Ranbir too is wearing the similar ensemble, but he can absolutely carry it off………..Agree with Ranbir Kapoor as GQ’s choice but Prateik still has a long way to go with his dressing.

Karan Johar

KJo was also voted the ‘Best Dressed’ this year, and I am all for this choice of GQ magazine. Never has he come dressed in an unflattering manner………………..always dressed like a Gentleman, he sure gets my thumbs up when I see him at red carpet events wearing the fitted suits designed by him & Varun Bahl. The hair is perfect, the shoes are perfect, the face is clean shaved…….now all we have to work on is the walk……….. 😉 ………………jokes apart, he indeed deserves to be in this list.

Rahul Khanna

With those drool worthy looks, Rahul Khanna too made to the list of GQ India’s ‘Best Dressed Men 2011’………….though Rahul is seen here wearing a tuxedo with a silver bow tie, white pants which I am no fan of…………….he still rocks. I think more than his dressing style,it is definitely his cool attitude and those cute looks which makes him look good in any damn thing. GQ………we totally agree on this celebrity.

Siddhartha Mallya

Siddhartha Mallya who has been seen on social events quite frequently since the past one year, has also made to the list of GQ India’s ‘Best Dressed’…………….I must say that he has a very flamboyant style of dressing but there is still a bit of maturity missing from his looks………I wish to see him in a more ‘Indianized Avatar’ at certain events than in his usual style of Hollywood wannabe………….One this choice I am not on the same page as GQ.

Rahul Bose

This pint size actor always makes his presence felt in any event that he attends……………he might not be the one to make people take notice of his dressing style, but his attitude speaks volume. Though I would vote for him as ‘talent powerhouse’ but ‘Best Dressed’???I am still in the middle of ‘ya’ versus ‘nay’ especially seeing him dressed in all white for the event………….GQ India picks him as one of the ‘Best Dressed’………me, I will let this one pass……….

Also present at the event were………..

Also seen at the event were Arjun Rampal along with wife Mehr Jessia, Nandita Mahtani, Sussane Roshan and Abhishek Kapoor. The ladies were dressed in white which seemed like they were following a dress code specified for the event. Nonetheless they all looked elegant while Arjun who made it to the best dressed list seemed a bit sleepy here……….I agree with GQ on Arjun as ‘Best Dressed’ but hate the fact that he at times forgets to have a clean shave look which we women adore on him. His crisp suits and effortless style have made him a red carpet ‘must see’…………….hope he listens to my wish and comes clean next time.

Queenie Dhody and Farhad Taraporvala also attended the party hosted by GQ magazine. Queenie came in dressed in an orange dress which reminded me of sherbet………………..bronze shoes and a golden clutch to complete the look. I have observed that Queenie often opts for short dresses but most of the times they fail to compliment for fab figure……….this time though she does look fabulous. My style wish for her would be to see her in gowns especially a one shoulder type…I am sure she would look absolutely amazing in those.

Isha Gupta and Sarah Jane Dias were also seen at the event…………..I like Isha’s look with those loose curl tresses but not liking Sarah’s look since it is hard for me to focus on the blue highlight on her dress or her hairdo………don’t know which one is worse. But since the night belonged to the lovely guys, let’s leave this here……..

GQ India Mens Award 2010 – Red Carpet Review

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on September 28, 2010

GQ Mens Award event was full of glamour quotient which is what makes this blog tick………….I love to see our very own Indian celebrities on the Red Carpet, where they all are dressed up to rock the fashion world. This time around Indian GQ Mens Award had Hollywood presence as well with the legendary John Travolta who is visiting India currently, posed for the shutterbugs. Let’s kick off with who wore what at this event……….

Abhishek & Aishwarya Bachchan

Abhishek and wifey Aishwarya have been voted as the most powerful celebrity couple in Asia by E! News Asia, I am a believer since no red carpet event is complete without the cosy twosome. Abhishek Bachchan wore a three piece black suit with a red tie to add that pop of colour…………………..no complaints about him since he is looking absolutely dressed for occassion and very much like a gentleman. Whereas I felt Aishwarya’s gown to be a bit dull……..the grey colour though was gorgeous but the bodice part is where things went wrong. The neckline cut in steps and the glitter part did not do much on the glamour part of this gown plus with the hair swept to one side………….I am not a fan. My advice to Aishwarya is that she is one of very few women in India to carry off glamorous outfit with an ease so please don’t be too simple.

Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan who was dressed in a Tuxedo also rocked the red carpet scene and was on a high with the Peepli Live selected for the Oscars from Indian Cinema………………this time around I wish his moviewould get the international accolade since I honestly believe he is one of the few Indian who uses his celebrity status for the betterment of our country. Coming back to his red carpet style, I like the fact that he went all formal for the occassion but feel the seams of his pants were too tight when worn with those shoes. Maybe it is just me????? But on the whole I am all for this avatar of Aaamir with hair neatly styled, the one button tux are smart……………Mr. Perfectionist gets a thumbs up for me. Hope the young guns of Hollywood follow him when it comes to dressing up for the occassion.

Priyanka Chopra

The vivacious Priyanka Chopra was all glam in the beige strapless gown…………….though the shiny satin in that colour is something I would personally avoid but Priyanka is able to carry off with ease. Though many fashionistas hated this look, I say it is glamorous, sexy and the colour is doing good on Priyanka’s complexion. So I am for it since I feel this woman oozes loads of sex appeal and has a great body so why not flaunt it. Go Pri………….Love this look. Priyanka won the ‘Woman of the Year’ award too………..

Abhay Deol and Preeti Desai

Abhay Deol seems to be inspired by Boy george’s early 1980s look…………………I like his individualistic sense of style but the shiny shoes with the loose tie and the fitted pants that don’t match his blazer…………..style wise it is not how I would have dressed up for a GQ magazine Mens Award……………..this style would have worked for MTV music awards but not here. Sorry Abhay, you are an amazing actor but this get up is just not for me. Funnily Preeti Desai looked all dressed for the occasion in the Little Black dress, ruby red lips and those killer heels. For sure this lady has a sense of style and knows it is always better to emphasize on one thing only when you are on the red carpet.

 Ranbir Kapoor

The Youngistaan heartrob Ranbir Kapoor was all dressed up in a Tuxedo which could have been fitted better since the suit seems loose at the waistline, the sleeves were too long and the bow tie was a bit limp. But what I wish Ranbir had shaved off and looked neat since one needs to put a handsome face on in those tux. So please tidy up next time around when you are all dressed up and show off your good looks to the world.

Dino Morea & Nandita Mahtani

Dino Morea might not be a big star in Bollywood but when it comes to style, he sure knows what looks good on him. I like his no tie, no bow look since he has kept it simple in a black suit and a white shirt with black piping on the button section. The outfit is neat and right for the event…………………whereas Nandita whose dress I simply love, made the wrong shoe choice. The animal print would have looked better on black, browns or beige but not on this blue. The one shoulder dress with detail work on the shoulder is beautiful but the shoes destroyed the look. I would have preferred a matt gold strappy shoes that match her clutch as well.

Arjun Rampal & Mehr Jessia

Mehr And Arjun both dressed in black was too much for me this time………………Of course Arjun looked pretty decent except for his tie which I felt was not required and the collar was unable to hide the tie.  Rest nocomplaints about his suit but I expect Mehr to wear more colour on the red carpet. She has am amazing body, alluring heigth, beautiful features……………..so what is stopping her from wearing colour and look drop dead gorgeous on the red carpet. All black outfit with a ‘Chanel’ waist chain is doing no wonders here…………….

Chunky & Bhavna Pandey

Chunky Pandey who surprisingly looks quite dapper in this suit and a tie that matches his background well…………I like his look for the fact that he has kept his entire suit simple in one colour but added a pop of colour through his tie. While wife Bhavna looks quite mis-matched with the animal print clashing with the florals. I wish her outfit would have been of one print only……………either all floral or all animal print. Mixing both is not giving the desired ‘fabulous’ look……….thought the shoes and matching ‘Bottega’ clutch give an understated look and work well here.

Simone Singh

As lovely as Simone truly is, this jumpsuit is not for her………………..the greenish blue satin jumpsuit with hideous pockets on the side, the shimmer jacket accompanied are a recipe for disastor. The only thing I like about this attire is her ‘Tiffany’ key pendant which looks elegant even against that colour. I wish Simone would have skipped her jacket altogether, wrn the jumpsuit alone and accessoried with a stylish cuff and a pair of earrings complimenting her pendant. Plus my advice to all would be to avoid pairing golden and silver hues in a single outfit…………….make only one metallic tone work while you dress up.

Queenie Dhody

Socialite & Jewellery designer Queenie Dhody walked in with beau Farhad Taraporewala dressed in tiger print sequin studded gown…………………..my eyes went wide open looking at the mess. Honestly if a woman is over the age of 40, it is sbetter to use animal prints in subtle measures like on the rim of a dress or jacket, on handbags, in form of scarf, shoes…………..the key is to keep it minimal. This is too loud for Queenie……….the big black clutch, the old Hollywood style hair, the sequins…………..all of it is too much. I would love to see her in pastels with a hint of shimmer.

Sheetal Malhar

Did someone just go for a walk on the beach, lost her way and ended up on the red carpet of GQ India Mens Award???? I think that has to be Sheetal Malhar…………..unfortunately the dress, the pearl necklace and the shoes are pretty…………but not appropriate for the event. The leather bag is also to some extent a spoiler in this attire…….would have loved to see sheetal in a Grecian inspired gown instead of a short summer dress.

Parmeshwar Godrej

Yyyyyyeeeeeeeekkkkkksssss…………….that is my reaction seeing Parmeshwar Godrej in this ensemble……….all I can say is ‘What was she thinking???’ The black shiny leggings, the net bodice, the low cleavage, the boring stole, the shiny pumps, all might be big labels but they ain’t looking good here. My request to Ms. Godrej is to tone down a bit and stick to graceful vintage outfits which are plenty in market. A woman like her will look amazing in a ‘Chanel’ rather than this hideous dress.

Rahul Khanna

Rahul Khanna definitely looks suave in this attire………………..hands down he is looking polished, sophisticated and handsome. Need I say any more for Rahul who is dressed in a two button Tuxedo which has an excellent fit……..by far this is my favourite look for GQ Mens Award. Rahul also hosted the event for the evening.

Anusha Dandekar

Anusha Dandekar wore a very colourful sequin dress made by Shane & Falguni Peacock has hotch-potch designs like the peek-a-boo cleavage, the black hemline, shimmer all over reminds of the song ‘Shiny Disco Ball’. But Anusha still managed to look amazing in the dress……………..maybe body language can make a world of difference. The belt and the shoes get her out of the brink of being badly dressed and the side swept ponytail puts the focus on her face rather than the glittery dress. Still not a fan of the dress, but adore Anusha in it.

Rahul Bose

Good things come in small packages………….well that is what I can say after looking at Rahul Bose who looked perfect in a grey suit adorned with black buttons, silver tieand balck shoes. The fit is proper, the hair is sleek, the tie stands out well……….the actor has never looked better. I am loving his style……………..No one could have done grey better than Mr. Bose.

Fashion & Bollywood movies……………….

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on June 19, 2010

I am a movie buff & there is no confessing about it. If you are an Indian who does not see any Bollywood movie or dance to any of its melodious tunes…………….please don’t call yourself a ‘Saccha Hindustani’…………….Bollywood is in our blood. These days it is in our dressing too…………ever notice your next door neighbour auntyji dressed in a Madhuri Dixit’s ‘Hum Aapke hai kaun’ trademark blue saree or your best friend trying to be like the gorgeous Deepika Padukone in those shorts & spaghetti tops which she wore in ‘Housefull’ or a guy walking in a denim with T-shirt reminding you of Ranbir Kapoor’s recent flick or the sexy siren dancing in a party dressed to kill as Kareena Kapoor in ‘Kambakt Ishq’…………………we all have seen these people somewhere right!!!

Let me take you through the fashion down the decades in bollywood and how it has changed the face of what you, me or anyone as a matter of fact wears in our everyday life.

1950s

I think the obsession started with seeing the yester year actresses like Madhubala, Nutan, Meena Kumari, Nargis Dutt, Waheeda Rehman all dressed in sarees with blouses which were printed or plain had puffed short sleeves.  The Western wear of the 1950s was long middy dresses since it was considered inappropriate for a woman to be dressed in revealing clothes. How can I ever forget the beautiful vintage jewellery like jhumkas, hooplas, matha tikka, chokker, bangles….. ahhhh……. jewellery……………… beautiful jewellery. The keyword for this decade was ‘Simplicity’……….be it the designs of the clothes or the make-up it was all kept minimal.

Legendary Actors like Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Kishore Kumar wore traditional clothes like dhoti kurta, kurta pyjama and when it came to formal western wear they opted for suits with tie. Hair for men were short accesorized usually with hats and women usually wore their long hair in a bun, plaits or simply left them open. There was no space for a tom-boy in that era since women were considered to act more feminine and men had to be thorough gentlemen. Movies like Awaara, Naya Daur, Chalti ka naam gaadi, Daag have set the trends for the people of India. But the fashion of the 1950s is classic and evergreen just like the movies.

1960s

Enter the Era of Anarkali suits, chudidhar with fitted kurtis & Mumtaz Saree [as seen above] were what one who has lived that era can recall……unfortunately I was born 2 decades late but would have loved to live the 1960s era when fashion had made a grand entry into Bollywood. People were discovering new styles in both Indian & western couture, experimenting with their looks.

What I can remember after seeing the movie is the high hair updos, ‘Sadhna’ cut which was a name given to fringe haircut, elongated eye-liner, big earrings, tight fitted clothes and the famous ‘twist’ dance. Asha Parekh, Mumtaz, Meena Kumari, Sharmila Tagore, Helen, Saira Bano were the top actresses in this time era influencing the fashion. The clothes were bolder than the previous decade in this ‘eastman’ colour decade.

Of course how can I ever leave the men behind…………..Icons like Shammi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Dharamendra, Manoj Kumar, Sunil Dutt ruled the bollywood scene and they generally prefered wearing western attire. Even today when I see the movies from this era, I brings so much of joy………………..Mughal-E-Azam, Teesri Manzil, Junglee, Aradhana, Bramhachari, Sahib, Biwi aur Ghulam, Jigri Dost, Padosan, Pakeezah [though released in 1972 it was made in the 60s]……………always refreshing to see these movies.

1970s

The ‘Flower Power’ or the ‘Disco Age’ years must have been the era that left quiet an impression on minds of very bollywood fan. The bell bottoms, platform heels, colourful sunglasses, psychedelic prints, butterfly collar shirts, big  jewellery, Maxi dresses, tie-dye designs are still fresh in my memory.  ‘Big’ was beautiful in the 1970s……………now that can be your hair, the print on the fabric, buttons on the shirt or the hemlines of your pants…………….

The hemlines went up and the necklines plunged a bit…………bold, demure style followed in this era where actresses like Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Neetu Singh, Hema Malini, Jaya Badhuri Bachchan ruled the time. The ‘bangs’ or the ‘wings’ look was very ‘In’ during the 70s for women…………Men too loved wearing their hair long with prominent side-burns. The leading men in bollywood were seen wearing fitted Blazers which were a bit flared at the hip coupled with broad ties………..I remember my Dad still has a couple of those and still not ready to give them up saying it was huge trend during his college years. Three piece suit also gained prominence during this era where one could see the hero’s of Bollywood wearing this style on & off the silver screen.

Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharamdra, Shashi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Jeetendra, were the idols for the young generation. Movies like Sholay, Seeta aur Geeta, Deewar, Yaadon ki Baraat, Amar Akbar Anthony, Bobby, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Anand, Guddi, Chupke Chupke were the movies making waves in bollywood.

1980s

I am a sample piece from this era since I was born in 1980s……………I am not telling you the year though………..but the bell bottoms + platform heel trend was phasing out ……………enter the strappy sandals and denim. Loads of colour was also the focus of the 1980s but people prefered wearing single colour instead of going in for fusion.

Rekha, Sridevi, Jaya Prada, Shabana Azmi, Dimple Kapadia, Padmini Kolhapure, Amrita Singh, Poonam Dhillon, Neelam ruled the silver screen in the 1980s. The saree in plain colours was a rage when Mr. India released…………I could see all the friends of my mother buy sarees in plain colour and consider themselves Sridevi……………Bhagyashree made the white Salwar Kameez famous in ‘Kabootar Jaa Jaaa’ song from the movie ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. The hair style meant more volume and people were simply crazy behind Dimple Kapadia’s hair do in ‘Saagar’ that every beauty salon put up a poster of Dimple in order to boost their sales. Hope you all remember the ‘Sagar Choti’ ……………..that is where the name came from. This era also made pants much more of a fashion for common people with denims catching the focus.

Actors like Sunjay Dutt, Sunny Deol, Mithun Chakravarthy, Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Naseerudin Shah, Rishi Kapoor made the fitted pants or jean…a routine. Of course not forgetting Jeetendra who made the white pants with white shoes a must have for every guy………………………. The rugged look was ‘In’ for the guys of the 80s. Movies that left a mark not just at the box office but also in fashion were Umrao Jaan, Mr. India, Maine Pyar Kiya, Chaalbaaz, Silsila, Shaan, Sagar……………

1990s

I remember the frenzy that followed the weeks after ‘Hum Aapke hai kaun’ released in India, If I ever went to any wedding I could see a belle dressed as ‘Madhuri Dixit’……………….remember the famous purple saree [Pic above] from the song ‘Didi tera devar deewana’…………….

Colourful Bandhni, shoulder pads, scarves, chunky jewellery, ankle high boots, tight fitted skirts, hair bands, big decorative bindis and matt lipsticks were a rage in 1990s. And of course all the actress like Kajol, Urmila Matondkar, Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, Raveena Tandon, Juhi Chawla set the trend for it. Menswear had also changed to a lot of extent with waist coats, leather jackets, baggy pants, loud print ties, dungrees, colourful denim making an entry into their wardrobe. Even if a guy is not all muscles he would wear a T-shirt underneath his over-sized shirt to make him look like a hunk……………..yeah I know you have been there too, buddy. Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan have sported that look in many of their movies. Talking about movies, I feel films like Hum Aapke hain Kaun, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil toh Pagal hai, Yes Boss, Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam, Rangeela, Raja Hindustani made an impact on the fashion industry as well.

These movies also made way for designers to enter Bollywood in a big way………….famously known was Manish Malhotra for transforming Kajol in DDJL, Kuch Kuch hota hai or giving a make-over to Karisma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani…………Designers made it big and created a new path where the clothes were not required to be rented from the dresswala but to be picked up from a boutique. The 1990s era was a gateway for Fashion designers who were able to showcase their creations not just in movies but also on Ramp and international beauty pagents. Actors & Actresses became more image conscious with respect to what they wore…………..each one wanted the designer to create a unique style for them. In india this was a revolutionary period in terms of fashion for sure……

2000s

Enter the era of ‘Stylist’ since the designers were already here……………the bollywood actors & actresses started making more frequent appearance on the red carpet hence needed someone to style them both on and off the screen as well. The best example of course can be Dhoom 2 where stylist  and fashion editor of Vogue India Anaita Shroff Adajania had made all the people look ‘hot’ with her styling tricks. She was also a part of the cast of ‘Kal ho na ho’ which was another style forward movie. But people loved the ‘Dil Chahta hai’ gang that changed the way men looked at themselves in the mirror.

Suddenly ‘Metrosexual Men’ were very much in vogue………..they styled their hair well, wore designer labels only, went in for a regular manicure/pedicure & professional grooming, carried a pair of stylish shades…………..in short men became much, much more fashion conscious which was a woman’s business till the turn of the century. Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan,  Saif Ali Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal we owe this change to you guys……..

It was ‘More the Merrier’ for women too who had an array of style to choose from…………she could go vintage with the classy ‘Devdas’ look by wearing kundan jewellery with designer saree or look like a million bucks by adorning short dresses which Kareena Kapoor carried off  in ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ ………else look feminine in the Anarkali chudidhar which Sonam Kapoor wore in ‘Saawariya’…………..the choice is unlimited.

Kareena Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherjee, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, Bipasha Basu are the front runners from the beginning of the 21st century. New faces like Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut are being looked up as the ‘next best thing’ in Bollywood fashion. The movie list that set a fashion trends would go on forever since today fashion changes as quickly as the movies in the theatre……….hope the next decade is even more fun-filled.
