Cannes Film Festival is a big event for our desi celebrities to walk the international red carpet dressed in the finest by India’s leading designers. We have very interesting list of Celebs who will walk the red carpet this year – The Bachchans, Freida Pinto, Sonam Kapoor, Vidya Balan and many more. IFP takes you through the years to list down some of the best & the forgettable red carpet looks of Indian Celebrities that we have witnessed in the past few years.
Best Looks at Cannes
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is a veteran at Cannes and also one of the celebrities to give the best red carpet looks over the years. But her best till date is the golden-green ‘Sabyasachi’ saree which she wore for the preview of ‘Raavan’ at Cannes [above] in the year 2010. The beautiful detailling on the saree combined with emerald green blouse, sleek parted hairdo and minimal jewellery scored Aishwarya the best red carpet look ever. It was very Indian and simply fabulous.
Other red carpet looks include Aishwarya Rai in Elie Saab at Cannes 2011. The pastel colour reflected beautifully on her polished skin while the peplum detail at the waist helped her to conceal her baby bump………..smart move for the red carpet.
Her other previous favourite looks include the black gown in the year 2005 & a blue gown which had a dazzling snake neck-piece in the year 2007. Hope her look this year tops all her previous looks.
Arjun Rampal & wife Meher Jessia were the best dressed couple at Cannes last year when Arjun opted for a Jodhpuri jacket paired with Jodhpuri pants by designer Rohit Bal………….. plus add a moustache for that Indian touch & we were floored. Wife Meher complemented his look in her yellow gown by designer Tarun Tahiliani. Kudos to them for picking this very contemporary Indian outfits for the international red carpet.
Sonam Kapoor keeps us eagerly awaiting for her walk down the red carpet at Cannes but her very first appearance at this event was by the far the most memorable one too. Sonam opted for a beautiful ‘Jean Paul Gaultier’ gown and Amrapali jewels that left an impression on our minds. She brought a lot of fun & freshness to the red carpet……….we love her for the fact that she isn’t afraid of taking fashion risks.
Sharmila Tagore stood her own in her choice of sarees when she was one of the Jury member at Cannes 2009. In a sea of gowns & dresses, Sharmila choose pastel colour sarees devoid of heavy detailing and complemented each of her looks with her collection of vintage Indian jewels. By far one of the more elegant looks as Sharmila brought her touch of royalty on the red carpet.
Forgettable looks at Cannes
One of Aishwarya’s early look were unfortunately the disastrous ones too………she was styled by Neeta Lulla for the event that gave us red carpet shock which we are yet to get over with. Seen above is Aishwarya in a green saree, beaded blouse & hairstyle by your enemy……. we really wish to forget this look from the history of Cannes.
Sonam Kapoor though did not look that bad, she failed to create an impression in this gown as well. Sonam is seen here wearing ‘Alexander McQueen’ gown at last years Cannes Film Festival. She did not take any fashion risk her and played safe with the hair, the make-up & the outfit of course. A young girl like Sonam definitely needed to be more adventurous.
Deepika Padukone’s first outing at Cannes in Rohit Bal did not make head turns……………..the reason was so many celebrities before Deepika had already posed in a saree plus there was nothing extraordinary in her look that would have made up sit up & take notice. Wish she would have worn a gown instead and gone wild with her make-up back then………..here is hoping that she will not fail us the next time.
Mallika Sherawat has to the ‘Queen of Disaster’ when it comes to dressing up for the red carpet at Cannes. Mallika got the outfit from ‘Dolce & Gabbana’, told her hairstylist to mess up her hair & wore high ankle heels to take her fashion revenge from people who love to write about her style. What I fail to understand is that why did she make such a style mess on the international red carpet, instead could have tried on the desi red carpet & spared us this fashion moment.
