Academy Awards better known as ‘Oscars’ is the most prestigious award ceremony held to honour the best in Hollywood. Many Indian origin designers who created outfits for Hollywood celebrity as well as Indian celebrities were present to grace this occasion. Heres your look at the red carpet.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Our very own Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was present at the event looking awesome in an ‘Armani Prive’ off shoulder gown in shimmer coffee colour with those amazing earrings. Thank god she is wearing jewellery like the earrings, a cuff and the gorgeous ring……………Love the look. It is clean, hair is done up in bangs with twisted curls at the end, a mini chocolate brown clutch, her skin is flawless. Can’t find any fault with it. She is at her best on the International red carpet as I have maintained since her Cannes appearances. Way to go girl………
Just In are the photos of Aishwarya along with hubby Abhishek who looked quite handsome himself in a tuxedo. Check out their photo together. Feast your eyes people.
Annette Bening wearing a Naeem Khan outfit
Oscar nominee Annette Bening was seen wearing a Naeem Khan designed outift from his recent Fall 2011 collection. A graceful woman like her can do no wrong with her emerald earrings, bracelet and a ring. Love the gown on the runway, love it equally on her. Way to go Naeem Khan.
Mallika Sherawat also made a surprising red carpet appearance in a shimmer grey gown with quite an eye-catching one shoulder design. I am gonna say that this appearance of hers was way better than the earlier ones. Though the shoes and the hair got me down a bit, still she looks sexy in a sleek way. I like it…………..
A.R.Rahman with wife
A.R.Rahman walked the red carpet hand in hand with his wife wearing a black suit with a ‘pop of colour’ tie. His wife Saira went for a more traditional way opting for a golden beige salwar kameez & looked elegant. A.R.Rahman went traditional in a black bandhgala while he performed on stage……………I honestly preferred that look which you can see below.

Many of my guy friends have told me that I write very less about men’s fashion…………….I believe them totally. I also believe that menswear in our country is yet to reach a tipping point since there are not many designers who create clothing line for men. Men are just starting to get a bit more conscious about their dressing style now…………..thanks to our celebrities who somehow motivate them in a good fashion way. This summers the menswear trend which gets my vote has to ‘Resort Wear’…………..arises a question what actually is ‘Resort Wear’????? It is better explained as a collection inspired by the tropical hot-spots of the world comes a comfortable, light weight, casual range which can be worn all year around and are easy to carry. Generally made from cotton, jute and microfiber, it consists of nautical striped T-shirts,short sleeve shirts, lightweight jackets & coats, breathable trousers and pleated shorts in pastels or lighter colours. Better example would be a colourful Hawaiian shirt initiated this trend but somehow avoid wearing those except when you are in Hawaii. Look much more trendy with this new designs be it at a club, party, hanging out with friends or on a date. Designers like Riyaz Ganji, Troy Costa, Rohit Gandhi, Rahul Khanna, Gaurav Gupta have already displayed their Resort wear collection at the fashion weeks.
Blazers with jeans
Handsome men like Ranbir & Arjun can never go out of style, but pairing jeans with blazers is so out of fashion. Pairing a shirt or a T-shirt is very much acceptable but to put on a blazer as well seems so wrong. There are amazing trouser fits available in the market to suit individual body frame…………….why not pair the blazer with pants instead of denim. You can either be casual or formal but mix & match of both is a disaster. If you are thinking of wearing this attire, drop the idea………….instead go for casual blazers with trousers as seen in the resort wear collection.
What is Classic???
Achkan and Bandhgala Suits
Classic, classic, classic…………………..any man of any age, any body type and any skin colour looks amazing in an Achkan or a Jodhpuri suit also know as ‘Bandhgala’. This I can confidently say is what we can offer to the West when it comes to dressing formally. One can get to see people wearing ‘Bandhgala’ at parties, weddings, red carpet events or meeting the Indian President. Celebrities like Aamir Khan, Anil Kapoor, Amitabh & Abhishek Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Imran Khan, A.R.Rahman and the list is endless………….have been seen working this style on several occassions. Even our Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh represents his country abroad wearing a ‘Bandhgala suit’ and Chacha Nehru sported one so elegantly. Have I given you enough reasons why this style is evergreen???? So make sure you have one in basic black if you are not much into bling or detail work. For the summer season try combining an unbuttoned Bandhgala jacket with a cotton kurta or opt for a bandhgala in a lightweight fabric to beat the heat.

Knee Length Kurta with Churidhar
Summer time often remind me of cooler things like lemon juice and cold shower, so why should our dressing be any different???? The knee length kurta combined with chudidhars are back for the summer and absolutely required. Go for fabrics like cotton and chiffons for that lighter feel…………………accessorize your outfit with a dupatta or a stole, a bag and jewellery.Try straight cut or flared at the hemline for style. One can also opt for kurtis with trousers or pants. Pastel colours are great since they help you keep cool throughout the harsh heat but you can opt for darker shades for night time. One might get to see alot of this style in the upcoming Indian Fashion Weeks…………………so go ahead buy as many as you want to be trendy & ready for the Summers.
Heavily layered Anarkalis
I have seen every single celebrity wear one of these and am totally sick of it by now. Heavy Layers of fabric like crepe and silks with a touch of velvet is great for winters but the summers call for something light. No doubt the Anarkalis look fabulous, but do ask yourself this……………….Is it the right silhouette to be worn in heat???? This trend is on it’s way out, so stack them up in your wardrobe and go light…………
Trend that’s Forever
A Saree is a creation we Indians have given to the world…………sensuous, stylish, evergreen saree gets my vote for a must have in every Indian Women’s wardrobe. Come summer or winter, the saree stays firmly in it’s place…………try draping the saree as you wish or one can even pair it with leggings, go the traditional gujarati way, double drape it like the 1960s, wear it the Bengali style, try on ahalter neck or a strappy blouse, pleat it up for the sexy look………..infinite ways to drape your saree. That’s way it is the trend which will be my favourite in Indianwear. Go try it on for the next partyto look ‘OH SO FABULOUS’.

Flared bottoms or wide leg pants are gonna be so ‘In Vogue’ this upcoming summer season and why not???? Who wants to wear a fabric that clings to your skin in the harsh summer heat………..go loose this season. Try khaki capris, colourful shorts, wide leg trousers in order to beat the scorching heat……………….just a word of caution here : Avoid pants which give a feel of bell bottoms………..you don’t wanna go too wide legged.
Please store skinny pants or jeans in your wardrobe…………………infact hide them till the trend knocks on your door again. Why wear these in the hot summers and feel totally like an ‘Egyptian mummy’???? Be comfortable this upcoming season, wear these some other season…………..try cotton skin tights instead which still allow circulation of air.
Come any season all year round, Straight fits in pant style gets my vote………….hands down. Straight leg trousers or denim work for me with a formal shirt or a smart top. Accessorize it with open toe heels and voila…………you are rearing to go. This trend equally works for guys also. Pleated trousers also are fashionable but check first if they suit your body style or not.

How many times can a designer make a comeback in his or her career???? Once, twice ……………ok maybe thrice but that’s where I would draw a line. But Naeem Khan seems to be an exception who happens to make a successful comeback every single time. Every season I eagerly wait for Naeem’s new collection with new hopes that this time around there will be something unique to look forward to…………….I am never disappointed. I heaved a sigh of relief when I saw some colour and detail work in Naeem Khan’s Fall 2011 collection whereas most other designers went more gothic and dark. I must say that cold season does not always have to be dark and gloomy……………….it needs to have a touch of colour here and there.
Naeem has used more prints this time unlike last year’s Fall/Winter 2010 collection where mirror detail work took center stage and the earlier collection was more ‘Rocker Chic’. This time around ‘Sophistication’ was the key to the look on the runway with the models styled with pulled back hairdos, adorned with earrings only walked down the runway, each one looking like a million bucks in the shimmery outfits. There was a large variety in terms of styles with halter necks in flowy dresses, off shoulder gowns, cocktail dresses with sequin & stone work, prints on black background, kaftans in jewel tones, prints never used before on the runway……………..unique as I said earlier.
I am a fan of the gowns in this collection which had elaborate detail work all over and few of them had sexy eye-catching ‘backs’. The colour palette was more of rich dark shades which totally works for the fall season………..love the rich jewel tones like sapphire blues and ruby reds. The only design which I was not digging was the use of more fur & ostrich feathers which stood out more than the detail work, totally overpowering the entire look………… I have seen Naeem use fur last season’s collection also but that was limited to trimmings only. I understand that the theme required fur to be incorporated but without it too the collection would have worked for me……………………this is just my honest opinion. I truly believe that use of colours combined with detail work are the strong points of Naeem which sets him apart from the rest of the clan.
My verdict : Each Outfit looks like a piece of ‘Art’…………..very alluring, amazingly creative yet extremely sophisticated. Naeem Khan’s hardwork and effort are beautifully reflected in every silhouette.

Wayfarers style Sunglasses
I love the Retro look on people these days andof course the Wafers style of sunglasses which were a rage in 1980s are back with a bang this summer season. Though this time around they are available in many colours like green, red, pink, blue, yellow and even in prints. Any girl wearing this style looks very fashion forward, while the guys can portray a bad boy image without creating any trouble. This style looks good on casual only but people who are risk takers can make it work anywhere. Indian celebrities like Sonam Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan & Ranbir Kapoor have been seen wearing the Wayfarers.
My recommendations : Ray Ban ‘Wayfarer’ collection.
Honestly I am tired of seeing all the women wear the same trend over & over again in order to be a fashionista. Whether it suits your face frame or not, ladies need to have these just for style sake……………..take my advice, the oversized sunglasses trend is long gone, not there…………..puff…..disappeared. Please try to replace these with something that is best for your face shape. I have chucked my pair of sunglasses, I hope you too chuck them soon. The same is applicable for guys also……………say goodbyes to Oversized sunglasses.
For Every Season
Aviators style made extremely famous by Salman Khan in the movie ‘Dabbang’ are definitely for keeps. Any season, any time of the year, one can wear them throughout. Aviators does make men different from the boys……………I dig these sunglasses since they never go out of style.I have seen people wearing them since I was a kid. If you are the type who likes to stick to one pair of sunglasses. Aviators might be the answer. Plus these look amazing on women too…………thanks to Ray-ban for launching a collection for ladies as well. Go ahead, buy these and wear them forever.
My favourite: Ray-ban Aviator Collection for Men & Women.

Bibhu Mohapatra is one of the talented designer hailing from India who is making waves in the fashion industry abroad. He presented his recent Fall/Winter 2011 collection at the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week which was inspired by ‘The Crucible’. Dark tones ruled the showcasing of his collection including styling. Cocktail dresses are definitely my favourite in this collection with wide legged pants coming a close second. But somehow I am not a fan of his gown creations. His used of fur on jackets and overcoats for this collection is quite admirable. Though he has used alot of black in order to define the ‘Fall’ theme plus his inspiration which is also dark in nature, I somehow think more colors might have made a slight difference to the collection like the jewel tones looked beautiful when combined with black. A pop of colour can really do wonders even in winters. The collection was demure yet very ladylike………..I like the collection which had the key element of wear-ability.

I love these tiny, cute, pretty, ladylike………………….help me, I am running out of adjectives to describe the Petite bags. It is so refreshing to have these bags back on the fashion scene. They are appropriate for day time or night-time, you can possibly take them anywhere. Since all things are getting compact in size, I am sure that petite bags will be fit for the upcoming summer season. Go for a solid colour or try print patterns which you can wear with your denim. Go buy one for yourself and enjoy showing it off. Good things do come in small packages………………Petite bags are here to stay……………..at least this summer.
Why do we women carry the entire house with us………………honestly, seeing an oversized bag actually makes me think what is inside it that requires so much of space. Funnily one might just find handful of things in there. I can declare that these oversized bags are definitely ‘out’ this summer season. Women might feel big bags are comfortable to carry along but can you actually find your stuff??? I know that I never can. Unless you are travelling or carrying clothes for change, please spare your shoulders some pain and go light. Chuck these big bags and add some more grace to your style by opting for something classy.
What’s for Forever???
India has festivals, weddings, parties and loads of celebration all year round……………….so it makes a lot of sense to have a party clutch in your wardrobe for all these times. This is a perfect accessory for all year round. Dress it up with a traditional outfit or dress it down with the clutch taking all the attention. I am a huge fan of Indian Potli bags and clutches since they are so colourful with beautiful detail work. Though crystal ones are also for all occasions but avoid too much of ‘bling’……………………….subtleness is the key here.
My Pick : MALAGA clutches by Malini Agarwalla.

Indian Fashion Police completes it’s first year with more than 3.4 lac visitors and still counting. Thank you to all for reading and giving your honest feedback to me. On starting my new year, I wanted to present a designer who is very creative and refreshing on this Indian Scene.
Every fashion week I await to see something beautifully creative and different yet wearable outfits from our designers but most of the time I end up being disappointed. One designer has managed to caught my eye last year due to her originality. Rehane Yavar Dhala better known by her brand name ‘Rehane’ had displayed some of the most dreamy dresses I had ever seen on the Indian runway. The use of colours on the silhouettes looked like an artist bringing life on a blank canvas through his beautiful painting.
Rehane is based from Chennai but is a descendant of Diwan of Mysore, Jaipur & Hyderabad – Sir Mirza Muhammed Ismail and her father has also severed our country as Indian Ambassador to Iran, Italy & Australia. Though her family has also been through devastation inform of her mother Shakereh Khaleeli’s untimely death which made headlines in the mid 1990s. Rehane choose to move on and be triumphant in life. She studied fashion in Italy, Rome and went on to set her own label ‘Rehane’ in 2002.
Today her collections are sold in boutiques in Mumbai, Bangalore, New Delhi, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Middle East, Canada. Her flagship store remains in Chennai. She has been showcasing her collection in Lakme Fashion Week and Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week in India every year.
Her designs are very elaborate in terms of detail work but never over the top. She amazingly combines Indian colours & embroidery with western cuts & fits, the end result leaves us ladies gasping for more. Her dresses are cute, flirty yet very wearable, would make the wearer feel like she is the next best thing after Cinderella. The cocktail dresses are to die for which are available in a variety of colours and patterns also make a part of her collection every year. What was outstanding in her Spring/Summer 2010 collection, were the use of floral detail work on the short dresses. I could not get my eyes away from the fusion of attractive hues on the pastel background. Her Indian wear has more of rich colours blended with lighter shades in form of designs.
Year after year she somehow manages to stand out with her collection in the fashion weeks. Her contemporary fashion sense has helped sell her outfits to the elite down south. My style wish for her would be to have her Label store in Mumbai and get all the young actresses dressed in her flirty chiffon dresses. Honestly I am inclined more towards her western wear since they are something I believe at par with international standards in terms of design. Why look outside for a designer dress when we have Rehane in India to dress us up??? That is exactly why she is the designer of the month.

Imran & Avantika Khan’s wedding reception was held on 5th February, 2011 at Taj Lands End in Bandra, Mumbai. The party which was thrown by his uncle Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran Rao was a grand affair with the entire Bollywood industry attending it. Here is your sneak peek of the event with the bride, the groom and the hosts.
Oh how excited I am to see an Indian wedding of any relative or any celebrity for that matter. The amazing colours on gets to see the entire crowd wearing, the beautiful jewellery, the fragrant flowers all over, the delicious food and tons of enjoyment. Coming back to wedding, the recent celebrity to get hitched was our very own ‘chocolate boy’ Imran Khan to Avantika Malik who is daughter of Vandana Malik CNBC-TV 18 head honcho. The wedding took place on 10th January, 2011.
The bride wore a beautiful ash grey colour lehenga with pink, maroon and golden border which looked like one from Manish Malhotra’s latest collection and ethnic indian jewellery. The groom wore a bandhgala designed by Karan Johar-Varun Bahl looking every bit handsome. The ceremony took place at Aamir’s residence was a registered marriage attented by close family members only. While Mama Aamir Khan went for an black achkan with a stole also designed by Karan &Varun. Kiran Rao went for a black and blue outfit with silver work but the outfit is too much of a mess. On the whole the bride and the groom looked like a pair made for each other……………………………Congratulations to the newlyweds.
The Sangeet party was held at Karjat were the Malik’s own a farm-house. Avantika was all dressed red ‘Manish Malhotra’ Lehenga looking radiant. I liked her styling which was very mughal era inspired. While Imran wore a velvet Karan Johar – Varun Bahl Achkan with embroidery work. But I do prefer Avantika’s look over Imran’s. Nonethless many celebrities came in the sangeet party and gave their best wishes to the couple.
Aamir Khan also dressed in Karan Johar – Varun Bahl attire looked very good since the light colour suits him well while wife Kiran Rao was dressed in ‘Sabyasachi Mukherjee’ Lehenga. I like the way Kiran’s outfit works here since it is not too blingy yet very traditional. Love her jewellery though.
For the mehendi cermony the couple came very simply dressed where Avantika wore a Patiala Salwar-Kameez,Imran was dressed in a kurta over formal pants. Good to see that these guys have kept the ceremonies very simple, classy and real. As a fashionista I would say that the entire wedding affair was not at all over the top and done with some good taste in fashion sense.
The engagement took place last year in a private ceremony saw Avantika wearing a Varun Bahl creation and Imran in a Karan Johar – Varun Bahl Achkan. I am gravitating more towards Imran’s look since I feel that Avantika’s look is a bit too messed up especially the corset with an extended sleeve. But at the wedding the bride looked every bit graceful. Cheers to the newly weds.
