Green Carpet at IIFA 2013

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on July 7, 2013

IIFA Awards 2013 started in Macau this past weekend. ‘Indian Fashion Police’ brings you the lowdown of the looks on the green carpet of this event.

Deepika Padukone looked uber hot in a¬†coral floral all-over metallic beaded chiffon wrap-front gown from Naeem Khan’s Spring 2013 collection. Have to say that she has found the perfect designer in Naeem……….with his stylish designs, Deepika can seldom go wrong. Love this look on her.

Deepika was also spotted in a Naeem Khan outfit at the IIFA technical awards as well. The beaded top was paired with pants that had a skirt overlay and was a unique choice for the red carpet. What was right that Deepka took a risk which was paid off with the correct styling. Demure choice…….ladies please learn few lessons here. ūüėČ

Madhuri Dixit opted for soft pink & blue ‘Manish Malhotra’ anarkali for the IIFA Technical Awards. The outfit spoke loads about style on the red carpet and did not need much styling….the light colours looked beautfiul on Madhuri. Like this look for sure.

Jade by Monica & Karishma designed Madhuri’s outfit for the main IIFA awards. Though I love the black & golden combination of this lehenga but the drapping part spoilt this look entirely. Wish would have drapped it in a more neater way rather than kust putting the pallu over in a jiffy. The hair & the jewels were glorious with this outfit.

Anushka Sharma was dressed in ‘Roberto Cavalli’ gown in white but the no accessories look felt too plain for a glamorous event. The hair too was lame as was the missing bling. A white pristine gown is a perfect canvas to experiment with matt gold jewellery or colour stone. Add some glam factor to this look Anushka……

Sridevi opted for a sequin studded off shoulder gown for the big nite and boy did she look awesome on the green carpet. The side swept hair, stone embellished clutch, red lips and a pose to match said it all. This is how one should look on the red carpet…….Absolutely Glam!!!

Neha Dhupia always stands out in a stylish manner at any event………….even at IIFA she was no exception as she walked the green carpet in ‘Anamika Khanna’ anarkali paired with black pants. The lace detailing of the outfit was elegant ¬†and Neha kept the jewellery to the minimal. The hair ¬†& the make-up blended well with this look………..Adore it on her.

Jacqueline Fernandes also went all glam in this ‘Roberto Cavalli” outfit in shimmer gold. Love the vintage Hollywood-style hair that gave alot of focus on the d√©colletage area. For the event this look is definitely one of my favourite.

Amrita Rao in a shimmer gown as well failed to make any impression in this outfit. The hair was messy & not stylish, there was nothing new in her make-up and the look was devoid of any eye-catching accessory. Need Amrita to find her signature look.

OK we have seen Vidya don Sabyasachi looks on the red carpet but watching similar looks over & over again is not that exciting at all. ¬†Even in Sabyasachi’s recent collection there is so much of beautiful colours & designs……… why not opt for those Vidya instead of sticking to dull colours. As for IIFA, Vidya is wearing ‘Sabyasachi’ ¬†lehenga.

¬†Huma Qureshi decided to go black in this outfit by designer ‘Nikhil Thampi’ ………..not at all excited about the accessories which Huma opted for with this dress. I do like Huma’s hair & make-up but the nude lips with the chunky cuff & nude peep toes did nothing much to call this look amazing. So much experimentation in terms of shoes & accessories could have been done on this silhouette….sigh!!

Lisa Haydon in ‘Namrata Joshipura’ gown………something in this outfit reminds me of the term ‘Gothic’ ¬†but Lisa manages to make this look good on the green carpet. The braided hair compliments the look perfectly……… it.

Divya Dutta made a pretty picture in red saree at the IIFA awards…….even though this might not be the best look seen till date, Divya does look beautiful in this saree and this one of the good looks seen on Divya in a long time.

Minissha Lamba in ‘Ayesha Depala’ gown which had feather touch, was paired with a metallic belt. The look was not that great and wish Minissha would have opted for another outfit altogether………..this one made her look more like a blanket than glamorous.

What is the most common mistake that Indian actors make when they are dressed on the red carpet………they forget or absolutely ignore to shave off the unnecessary stubble when they are wearing a Tuxedo. Please go all clean when one wants to wear a tuxedo on the red carpet……….cleaner the look the better dressed one looks.

Red Carpet at the Filmfare Awards 2013

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on January 21, 2013

58th Filmfare Awards were held at Yashraj studios in Mumbai. Ranbir Kapoor & Vidya Balan walked away with the leading actor awards, yet again. Annu Kapoor & Anushka Sharma took home the filmfare for their supporting roles while Barfi was awarded the ‘Best Film’ award. Many congratulations to the winners………….now getting back to our fashion business, Filmfare Awards are a big deal for fashionistas as it sets the tone for the year ahead in terms of celebrity fashion. IFP takes you through the red carpet of this event & reviews the fashion.

Deepika Padukone in a demure Prabal Gurung…….with a body like hers I feel she did absolute justice to this outfit. On anyone else this gown would have looked trashy but Deepika wowed me…….the fit, the cut [especially the cut work], sheer draping, ¬†no accessories, coral lips and hair tied up. Deepika is back to rule the red carpet for sure. Love it…….. ūüôā

Ileana D’cruz wanted to shine for the big nite…..she did bag the ‘Promising Newcomer’ Award for her role in ‘Barfi’. This ‘Roberto Cavalli’ outfit reminds me of the glittery 1970s where sequins were very fashionable. Not a fan of this outfit, but Ileana did manage to tone the look down with tasteful jewellery, clutch & shoes ¬†to match.

Ranbir Kapoor dressed in all black three piece suit which did look vintage especially the button detail on the jacket. I wish Ranbir would surprise us with much more fresher looks especially in Indianwear. The stubble & the all black attire is turning a bit boring. He is a fine actor of this generation, but would love to see him rock the red carpet too. SIGH!! ūüė¶ ūüė¶

Priyanka Chopra has been wearing alot of colour lately but never expected her to wear something so loud. The colour with so much of glossy sheen was simply over the top……..add the trail of the gown & we ¬†have a Prom Queen. Hate this look on Priyanka though neck up she did look very pretty but the outfit is altogether a different story. ūüė¶ ūüė¶ ūüė¶

¬†Alia Bhatt making a graceful appearance in ‘Manish Malhotra’ lehenga in which she looked pretty. But why opt for something so safe, why not experiment a bit with your style???

Anushka Sharma made me remembered the 1960s era where the flower power was on its rise and the winged eye-liner trend at its peak. The canary yellow colour is lust worthy and the entire looks spells vintage. She is wearing a ‘Victoria Beckham’ gown. L-O-V-E in capital for this look………that aside, ¬†Anushka would look wonderful with a fuller figure though……what say people???

Breaking away from the conventional lehenga & anarkali style, Chitrangada Singh made me proud in this ‘Anand Kabra’ outfit. The side swept braid, vintage jewellery and the colour all get browny points from IFP. Chitrangada has been a risk taker on screen as well off it and her style shows positive signs of the same.

Minnisha Lamba in a Krishna Mehta pastel outfit………….with the lack of some bright colour this look was a total wash-out on Minnisha. I wish she would have added the colour in form of jewellery or bright coloured lipstick. I did see this collection of Krishna on the runway and also liked it. But not liking the way this outfit was styled on Minnisha. Sigh…:-(

¬†Neha Dhupia wore a ‘Victoria Beckham’ outfit in black with hair accesories to highlight her look. I do like this look but wish she would have added some more drama to her look. The plain outfit of hers is like a canvas which Neha could have made look a lot more glamorous with addition of a belt to match her jewellery. ¬†Nonetheless simple look works as well.

¬†Yami Gautam in a ‘Tarun Tahiliani’ pastel lehenga…………waist up she does look pretty but it is the detailing on lehenga which was not needed. The corset type choli would have looked better if it was paired with a plain net lehenga. But hey, that is just me……….do you like this look of hers???

Madhuri Dixit Nene went all glam in this shimmer blue ‘Alberto Makali’ ¬† ¬†…………..she has taken a risk opting for this gown and unfortunately this one comes across as too flashy than classy for me. ¬†I wish she would have given one of those ‘Dior’ looks in which she looks heavenly………shimmer in subtle proportion looks good but too much can spoil the entire look.

Parineeti Chopra seems to be taking a liking to Gothic looks coz her ‘Rajat Tangri’ dress goes feel dark to me. On Parineeti the dress is a misfit…………just not feeling this satin attire. Wish Parineeti would have opted for a more colourful appearance that go all black in satin. I find this look totally dated. ūüė¶ ūüė¶

Sridevi in coral ‘Alberta Ferretti’ gown is a surprise for me……..fortunately it is a pleasant one. Though this might not be her best looks till date but the elegant manner in which she carries off this look is superb. Pairing the outfit with a Judith Leiber which works well with her outfit, IFP is happy to see Sridevi take risks. ūüôā ūüôā

Vidya Balan in her trademark ‘Sabyasachi’ saree posed along with her hubby Siddharth Roy Kapur. Though we have seen the check saree on her earlier too in a different design, I wish Vidya would opt for something out of the designer’s new collection. It is boring to see her don the same look while taking no risk. ūüė¶

A cocktail saree in black & green looks beautiful………top it off with hairstyle with tight curls and you have a recipe for style disaster. That is exactly what Raveena Tandon did to this look. ¬†I do like her outfit but her hair……..please someone tell her hairstylist to have some mercy. ¬†ūüė¶

Urmila Matondkar in her ‘Manish Malhotra’ style did manage to look good after a lonnnnnnggg time. She absolutely had me on the colour of her outfit plus the styling was in sync with her attire. Absolutely like this one ūüôā

¬†Aditi Rao Hydari went the saree route in this Gaurav Gupta……….she looked amazing in this grey shimmer saree that gave a very gown like feel to the look. She kept the look understated with minimum accessories………one of the few looks given by Aditi. ūüôā

¬†Amongst the celebrities who opted for traditional attire, Shahana Goswami was a delight to see. Dressed in a ‘Sabyasachi’ black lehenga, she did look glamorous and perfectly styled for the evening. The hair pinned up in a bun, the red lipstick and only earrings look works for me………what about you???

Hello! Hall of Fame Awards 2012

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on December 14, 2012

IFP reviews the formal black carpet in this case at the Hello! Hall of Fame Awards 2012.

¬†Madhuri Dixit Nene entered this event in a black ‘Dior’ gown with hair doneup and make-up kept simple. She does look pretty but wish the silhouette especially the skirt part of it was not pleated instead a slimmer fit would have worked wonders for Madhuri. Nonetheless adore her on & off the red carpet. ūüôā

Katrina Kaif was also awarded the Hello! award where she wore a purple leopard Dolce & Gabbana print gown. This lady is effortlessly beautiful but her style needs loads of drama. I wish to see Katrina in more structured outfits than just in doll like dresses. Sigh! ūüė¶

Anushka Sharma in Roberto Cavalli monochrome print outfit left me a bit disappointed. Firstly the outfit is too plain and required¬†accessorizing¬†plus the old fashioned hair. This look gives me the feel of a gown without any glam quotient. ūüė¶ ………..Not a fan of the dress.

Sridevi along with hubby Boney Kapoor & daughter Jhanvi were spotted at the awards. Sridevi opted for a Prabal Gurung gown which was a dream….though I would just add that the messy hair braid was not desirable here…..Sridevi still managed to wow me. ūüôā ūüôā

Ranbir Kapoor in jodhpuri pants & a jacket………….nice outfit but wrong occasion. How I wish he would have combined a jodhpuri jacket along with the pants to complete this formal look. Not a fan of the stubble as well. ūüė¶

Arjun & Meher always make a good looking pair at any red carpet event. Arjun in his basic black suit was complemented by wife Meher’s golden sequin gown. Though not a fan of the gown but Meher sure makes this look work.

Sonali Bendre opted for this bright coloured saree with a nude colour sequin blouse. I am taken aback by so many colours in one outfit……….this one is way too filmy for me. ūüė¶

Sussane Roshan in a leopard print ‘Dolce & Gabbana’ outfit. For the occasion, this dress fits the bill. Thank lord that Sussane kept this look gracefully simple is minimal accessories. Like it… ūüôā

Priyanka Chopra received the Hello! Award in her Dolce & Gabbana gown…………Every red carpet event I am sure to spot Priyanka in pastels………….Wish she would opt for more lively colours as seeing her in pastels is getting way too boring for me. ūüė¶

People’s Choice Awards 2012

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 28, 2012

People’s Choice Awards has arrived in India finally…………..the only award show ¬†honouring people from various fields of ¬†pop culture across Bollywood, music, television and sports. Celebrities from the silver screen as well as television were in attendance at this glam event. IFP gets you a look at who wore what & how did they fare?

Katrina Kaif walked in looking like a doll in a Valentino lace tier dress. Many fashionistas did not fancy her strappy sandals in purple which even I would agree on………..maybe pairing a nude peep toe pumps might have done the trick but on the whole this outfit desperately needed a pop of colour. For the red carpet this look is way too simple and the glamour factor is missing. Katrina undoubtedly looked pretty but one needs to stand out on the red carpet rather than blending in especially if you are a celebrity. ūüė¶

Madhuri walked in with her husband Dr. Shriram Nene….Madhuri was dressed in a pink Manish Malhotra anarkali which did make her look different than her usual style of heavily embellished sarees. IFP likes this look of Madhuri and appreciates the fact that she has been experimenting with new styles lately. As for Dr. Nene……he is always dressed like a gentleman so why complain? ūüôā

Looked who just made an appearance on the red carpet post her recent wedding…….Kareena Kapoor is definitely a sight in white one shoulder gown by designer David Meister. Red lips were the part that caught my eye especially reminded me of the song from her upcoming movie ‘Talaash’ in which she has flaunted dark lips. On the whole Kareena looked good in this outfit…..she knows how to make heads turn. ūüôā

Priyanka Chopra wore a ‘Amato Haute Couture’ ….the entire look looked a bit wasted interms of styling. An oversized cuff did no good neither did the nude pumps or the tousled hair. Colour was missing from this entire look………wish Priyanka would opt for more darker shades in future. The pastels on her have become a routine. ūüė¶

Sameera Reddy rocked the red carpet in her choice of ‘Dior’ gown in hot red…….IFP likes this demure look. Plus the cuff & the dangling earrings made it look all the more alluring. Need I say anymore ūüôā ūüôā

Sagarika Ghatge made an appearance in Surily Goel outfit and Bottega Veneta clutch in hot pink. She did look pretty in this look…..longer earrings would have looked good on this look. IFP is loving her pink clutch though. ūüôā

Parineeti Chopra opted for a white ‘Anita Dongre’ design which needed accessories in colour. Plus the length of the gown seems a bit overwhelming on her petite frame. Parineeti is young and can experiment with her looks so why stick to this safer option which does no good to her cute face. ūüė¶

Hema Malini also walked the red carpet in a pink saree [my guess would be Neeta Lulla] at the event. Love the saree but not in awe of the blouse which makes the look rather very crowded. Sigh ūüė¶

Zarine Khan was looking hot in a jewel tone green outfit that had sequin bustier paired with matching clutch. From the looks of it IFP does like this look and Zarine did look beautiful in it. ūüôā

Finale at India International Jewellery Week 2012

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 24, 2012

Highlights of the closing ceremony at IIJW 2012

‘Indian Fashion Police’ has crossed over 2 million visits and what better way to celebrate but with a new post that features beautiful ladies like Madhuri Dixit Nene & Sonam Kapoor. Both the bollywood Divas walked the runway at IIJW 2012. Madhuri & Sonam wore Anamika Khanna outfit but it was Madhuri all the way for me. She looked absolutely amazing in this outfit which spelt ‘royalty’ all the way plus the¬†magnificent¬†jewels from PC Jewellers completed the look.

PC Jeweller’s Balram Garg and Madhuri Dixit at the Finale show at IIJW.

Sonam Kapoor¬†channelled the ‘Rajasthan’ with this look of hers. The jewels, the outfit and of course Sonam……..a perfect combination for the face of IIJW. Love!

Esha Deol – Bharat Takhtani Reception

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on July 1, 2012

Esha Deol & Bharat Takhtani’s wedding reception was held in Mumbai yesterday. The bride wore a fabulous ‘Rocky S’ lehenga in pink color while the groom was dressed in a tuxedo. IFP was excited to cover the wedding online and see the bridal trends Esha-Bharat nuptials. Many Bollywood celebrities graced this occasion for which IFP gives you an exclusive look.

Hema Malini and Ahana Deol opted for outfits by designer Neeta Lulla while Dharamendra kept it simple with a suit. Dilip Kumar & Saira Banu, Madhuri Dixit with her husband Dr. Shriram Nene, Rekha, Sushmita Sen, Anupam Kher with wife Kirron Kher, Kajol with mother Tanuka & sister Tanisha, MAdhoo, Shamita Shetty, Tabu, Sridevi with husband Boney Kapoor were few A-list guests who attended this event. IFP hearts Tabu’s look in Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla which stood out for it’s amazing bright color & Kajol’s look in Shehla Khan which spelt elegance all the way.

Vogue Beauty Awards 2011

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on July 30, 2011

Vogue India and Mickey Contractor come together every year to celebrate the Vogue Beauty Awards 2011, of course we have loads of celebrities making their presence felt at this event. Here is your low down on who wore what and how did they fare???

Anuskha Sharma

It is jumpsuit galore these days…………Anushka’s choice for the event was also a jumpsuit by Stella McCartney. She rocked this look which was sophisticated yet perfect for the event. The satin jumpsuit added loads of elegance to her pretty looks plus the strappy shoes were a perfect fit with the outfit. All I can say that it is casual but appropriate for such a fun event.

Madhuri Dixit

And I fall in love with Madhuri Dixit all over again………..this is how this beautiful lady ought to dress up and enter fashion events. She looked every bit graceful in this black gown with earrings to add that touch of ‘bling’……….I would have added a cuff too, but nonetheless Madhuri works that gown superbly. Do check out her ‘Vogue’ cover this month…………I am all eyes the way she has been styled……….she looks like a ‘Diva’ in true sense.

Dia Mirza

Dia Mirza opted for this shimmer top dress [I think it is a’Vince’ outfit again] and basic black open toe pumps for the night……she did look cute and that is what we are not looking out at the red carpet event. Since she is going thru the sequin dress pahse, I feel Dia can definitely do better than this.

Feroze Gujral

Feroze Gujral came in a black and white off shoulders gown with a traditional ‘Matha Tikka’………..I wish she would have given it a miss since just the gown works for me……..a cuff or a neck-piece would have given a glam look. This mix of traditional with the west somewhere did not gel well.

Shraddha Kapoor

Shraddha Kapoor is going places these days with walking at Couture Week, as the face of ‘Lakme’ and now at Vogue Beauty Awards…….usually one sees her dressed looking fun and ready to party. But this off shoulder gown in brown made me cringe my nose………..I prefer the Shraddha who is ready to experiment and take risks with her looks. This one is way too simple for my taste……….does no justice to her pretty looks.

Tisca Chopra

Tisca Chopra also went for the safer route by opting for black gown but somehow failed to make an impression with her style…..The Alexander McQueen clutch is the only pretty thing in this entire ensemble……….I truly believe it was the length of the gown where the entire look went wrong……….the hemline should have been a wee bit lower to cover those platform shoes……..better if she would have opted for high heel pumps without platforms. ¬†Alas such a pretty lady….maybe it was not her day.

Simone Singh

Simone Singh wearing a James Ferreira gown is a good combination………..the satin outfit stood out of the rest………the hair, the unique pattern of the dress, the cuff and the shoes……………..I feel she looks pretty when all of these are combined together. One someone else the dress might have not looked that great………Simone did absolute justice to the ensemble.

Synergy One Delhi Couture Week 2011 – Day 1

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on July 23, 2011

What a wonderful way to start the Couture week with Designers like Varun Bahl and my favourite one JJ Valaya…………plus add in a dash of spice in form of Madhuri Dixit…………….Voila!! you have an amazing Day 1. Here is a glimpse of the Couture Week which started off yesterday…………..feast your eyes people. More pics on their way………..

Varun Bahl

Supposedly as per the news Madhuri Dixit was to be the show-stopper for Designer Varun Bahl, instead she cheered for him from the front row and later posed for the shutterbugs in one of his creations. I do like the fact that designers these days are turning away from having celebrities as show-stopper…………..but honestly I would have loved to see Madhuri on the ramp……..sigh………….nonetheless Madhuri looked elegant in this Varun Bahl Creation…… for the designer, Sir could you please loose the pair of denims and opt for a formal trouser instead.

JJ Valaya

I wait an entire year just to get a glimpse of JJ Valaya’s collection………and fortunately I am never disappointed. The fact that I personally love about Valaya creations would be that they are so Indian…….the inspirations are form every corner of this beautiful country……….now how many designers can do that.

The new collection had alot of elements of his earlier creations………but when it is done perfectly then why ponder it. Every bit was¬†sensuous, the detail work was again breath-taking,¬†beautifully¬†crafted and most importantly every creation was fabulously wearable. The magician has created another ‘Indian Dream’ for me.

Fashion & Bollywood movies……………….

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on June 19, 2010

I am a movie buff & there is no confessing about it. If you are an Indian who does not see any Bollywood movie or dance to any of its melodious¬†tunes…………….please don’t call yourself a ‘Saccha¬†Hindustani’…………….Bollywood is in our blood. These days it is in our dressing too…………ever notice your next door¬†neighbour auntyji¬†dressed in a Madhuri¬†Dixit’s ‘Hum Aapke¬†hai¬†kaun’ trademark blue saree or your best friend trying to be like the gorgeous Deepika¬†Padukone¬†in those shorts & spaghetti¬†tops which she wore in ‘Housefull’ or a guy walking in a denim with T-shirt reminding you of Ranbir¬†Kapoor’s¬†recent flick or the sexy siren dancing in a party dressed to kill as Kareena¬†Kapoor in ‘Kambakt Ishq’…………………we all have seen these people somewhere right!!!

Let me take you through the fashion down the decades in bollywood and how it has changed the face of what you, me or anyone as a matter of fact wears in our everyday life.

I think the obsession started with seeing the yester year actresses like Madhubala, Nutan, Meena¬†Kumari, Nargis¬†Dutt, Waheeda¬†Rehman¬†all dressed in sarees with blouses which were printed or plain had puffed short¬†sleeves.¬† The Western wear of the 1950s was long middy dresses since it was considered inappropriate for a woman to be dressed in revealing clothes. How can I ever forget the beautiful vintage jewellery like jhumkas, hooplas, matha¬†tikka,¬†chokker, bangles…..¬†ahhhh……. jewellery……………… beautiful jewellery.¬†The keyword for this decade was ‘Simplicity’……….be it the designs of the clothes or the make-up it was all kept minimal.

Legendary Actors like Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Kishore Kumar wore traditional clothes like dhoti kurta, kurta pyjama and when it came to formal western wear they opted for suits with tie. Hair for men were short accesorized usually with hats and women usually wore their long hair in a bun, plaits or simply left them open. There was no space for a tom-boy in that era since women were considered to act more feminine and men had to be thorough gentlemen. Movies like Awaara, Naya Daur, Chalti ka naam gaadi, Daag have set the trends for the people of India. But the fashion of the 1950s is classic and evergreen just like the movies.

Enter the Era of Anarkali¬†suits, chudidhar¬†with fitted kurtis¬†& Mumtaz Saree [as seen above] were what one who has lived that era can recall……unfortunately I was born 2 decades late but would have loved to live the 1960s era when fashion had made a grand entry into Bollywood. People were discovering new styles in both Indian & western couture, experimenting with their looks.

What I can remember after seeing the movie is the high hair updos, ‘Sadhna’ cut which was a name given to fringe haircut, elongated eye-liner, big earrings, tight fitted clothes and the famous ‘twist’ dance. Asha Parekh, Mumtaz, Meena¬†Kumari, Sharmila¬†Tagore, Helen, Saira¬†Bano¬†were the¬†top actresses in this time era influencing¬†the fashion. The clothes were bolder than the previous decade in this ‘eastman’ colour decade.

Of course how can I ever leave the men behind…………..Icons like Shammi¬†Kapoor, Rajesh¬†Khanna, Dharamendra, Manoj¬†Kumar, Sunil¬†Dutt¬†ruled the bollywood¬†scene and they generally prefered wearing western attire. Even today when I see the movies from this era, I brings so much of joy………………..Mughal-E-Azam, Teesri¬†Manzil, Junglee, Aradhana, Bramhachari, Sahib, Biwi¬†aur¬†Ghulam, Jigri¬†Dost, Padosan, Pakeezah¬†[though released in 1972 it was made in the 60s]……………always refreshing to see these movies.

The ‘Flower Power’ or the ‘Disco Age’¬†years must have been the era that left quiet an impression on minds of very bollywood¬†fan. The bell bottoms, platform heels, colourful sunglasses, psychedelic prints, butterfly collar shirts, big ¬†jewellery, Maxi¬†dresses, tie-dye¬†designs¬†are¬†still fresh in my memory. ¬†‘Big’ was beautiful in the 1970s……………now that can be your hair, the print on the fabric, buttons on the shirt¬†or the hemlines of your pants…………….

The hemlines went up and the necklines plunged a bit…………bold, demure style followed in this era where actresses like Zeenat¬†Aman, Parveen¬†Babi, Neetu¬†Singh, Hema¬†Malini, Jaya¬†Badhuri¬†Bachchan¬†ruled the time. The ‘bangs’ or the ‘wings’ look was very ‘In’ during the 70s for women…………Men too loved wearing their hair long with prominent side-burns. The leading men in bollywood¬†were seen wearing fitted Blazers which were a bit flared at the hip coupled with broad ties………..I remember my Dad still has a couple of those and still not ready to give them up saying it was huge¬†trend¬†during his college years. Three piece suit also gained prominence during this era where one could see the hero’s of Bollywood wearing this style on & off the silver screen.

Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharamdra, Shashi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Jeetendra, were the idols for the young generation. Movies like Sholay, Seeta aur Geeta, Deewar, Yaadon ki Baraat, Amar Akbar Anthony, Bobby, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Anand, Guddi, Chupke Chupke were the movies making waves in bollywood.

I am a sample piece from this era since I was born in 1980s……………I am not telling you the year though………..but the bell bottoms + platform heel trend was phasing out ……………enter the strappy¬†sandals and denim. Loads of colour was also the focus of the 1980s but people prefered wearing single colour instead of going in for fusion.

Rekha, Sridevi, Jaya¬†Prada, Shabana¬†Azmi, Dimple Kapadia, Padmini¬†Kolhapure,¬†Amrita¬†Singh, Poonam¬†Dhillon, Neelam¬†ruled the silver screen in the 1980s. The saree in plain colours was a rage when Mr. India released…………I could see all the friends of my mother buy¬†sarees in plain colour and consider themselves Sridevi……………Bhagyashree made the white Salwar¬†Kameez¬†famous in ‘Kabootar¬†Jaa¬†Jaaa’ song from the movie ‘Maine Pyar¬†Kiya’. The hair style meant more volume and people were simply crazy behind Dimple Kapadia’s¬†hair do in ‘Saagar’ that every beauty salon put up a poster of Dimple in order to boost their sales. Hope you all remember the ‘Sagar¬†Choti’¬†……………..that is where the name came from. This era also made pants much more of a fashion for common people with denims catching the focus.

Actors like Sunjay¬†Dutt, Sunny Deol, Mithun¬†Chakravarthy, Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Naseerudin¬†Shah, Rishi Kapoor made the fitted pants or jean…a routine. Of course not forgetting Jeetendra¬†who made the white pants with white shoes a must have for every guy………………………. The rugged look was ‘In’ for the guys of the 80s. Movies that left a mark not just at the box office but also in fashion were Umrao¬†Jaan, Mr. India, Maine Pyar¬†Kiya, Chaalbaaz, Silsila, Shaan, Sagar……………

¬†I remember the frenzy that followed the weeks after ‘Hum Aapke¬†hai¬†kaun’ released in India, If I ever went to any wedding I could see a belle¬†dressed as ‘Madhuri¬†Dixit’……………….remember the famous purple saree [Pic above]¬†from the song ‘Didi tera devar¬†deewana’…………….

Colourful Bandhni, shoulder pads, scarves, chunky jewellery, ankle high boots, tight fitted skirts, hair bands, big decorative bindis¬†and matt lipsticks were a rage in 1990s. And of course all the actress like Kajol, Urmila¬†Matondkar, Madhuri¬†Dixit, Karisma¬†Kapoor, Manisha¬†Koirala, Raveena¬†Tandon, Juhi¬†Chawla¬†set the trend for it. Menswear¬†had also changed to a lot of extent with waist¬†coats, leather jackets, baggy pants, loud print ties, dungrees, colourful denim making an entry into their wardrobe. Even if a guy is not all muscles he would wear a T-shirt underneath his over-sized shirt to make him look like a hunk……………..yeah I know you have been there too, buddy. Shahrukh¬†Khan, Aamir¬†Khan, Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan¬†have sported that look in many of their movies. Talking about movies, I feel films like Hum Aapke¬†hain¬†Kaun, Kuch¬†Kuch¬†Hota¬†Hai, Dilwale¬†Dulhania¬†Le Jayenge, Dil¬†toh¬†Pagal¬†hai, Yes Boss, Hum Dil¬†de Chuke¬†Sanam, Rangeela, Raja Hindustani¬†made an impact on the fashion industry as well.

These movies also made way for designers to enter Bollywood in a big way………….famously known was Manish¬†Malhotra¬†for transforming Kajol¬†in DDJL, Kuch¬†Kuch¬†hota¬†hai¬†or giving a make-over to Karisma¬†Kapoor in Raja Hindustani…………Designers made it big and created a new path where the clothes were not required to be rented from the dresswala¬†but to be picked up from a boutique. The 1990s era was a gateway for Fashion designers who were able to showcase their creations not just in movies but also on Ramp and international beauty pagents. Actors & Actresses became more image conscious with respect to what they wore…………..each one wanted the designer to create a unique style for them. In india this was a revolutionary period in terms of fashion for sure……

Enter the era of ‘Stylist’ since the¬†designers were already here……………the bollywood actors & actresses started making more frequent appearance on the red carpet hence needed someone to style them both on and off the screen as well. The best example of course can be¬†Dhoom¬†2¬†where stylist¬† and fashion editor of Vogue India Anaita¬†Shroff¬†Adajania¬†had made all the people look ‘hot’ with her styling tricks. She was also a part of the cast of ‘Kal ho na ho’ which was another style forward movie. But people loved the ‘Dil¬†Chahta¬†hai’ gang that changed the way men looked at themselves in the mirror.

Suddenly ‘Metrosexual¬†Men’ were very much in vogue………..they styled their hair well, wore designer labels only, went in for a regular manicure/pedicure¬†& professional grooming, carried a pair of stylish shades………… short men became much, much¬†more fashion conscious which was a woman’s business till the turn of the century. Hrithik¬†Roshan, Abhishek¬†Bachchan, Aamir¬†Khan, Shahrukh¬†Khan, ¬†Saif¬†Ali Khan, Ranbir¬†Kapoor, Arjun Rampal¬†we owe this change¬†to you guys……..

It was ‘More the Merrier’ for women too who had an array of style to choose from…………she could go vintage with the classy ‘Devdas’ look by wearing kundan¬†jewellery with designer saree or look like a million bucks by adorning short dresses which Kareena¬†Kapoor carried off¬† in ‘Kambakkht¬†Ishq’ ………else look feminine in the Anarkali¬†chudidhar¬†which Sonam¬†Kapoor wore in ‘Saawariya’…………..the choice is unlimited.

Kareena¬†Kapoor, Aishwarya¬†Rai Bachchan, Preity¬†Zinta, Rani Mukherjee, Priyanka¬†Chopra, Lara Dutta, Bipasha¬†Basu¬†are the front runners¬†from the beginning of the 21st century. New faces like Deepika¬†Padukone, Sonam¬†Kapoor, Kangana¬†Ranaut are being looked up as the ‘next best thing’ in Bollywood fashion. The movie list that set a fashion trends would go on forever since today fashion changes as quickly as the movies in the theatre……….hope the next decade is even more fun-filled.
