Grand Finale at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013

Sabyasachi 

People who think that Indian Royals no longer exists, need to see Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s collection every single season. The grandeur and elegance seen in his outfits simply leave me speechless. This year I did get a chance to visit his signature store in Mumbai……….it felt as if I had entered a different era with fabulous outfits around me combined with beautiful architecture.

Vintage is a strength for Sabyasachi which he presents in numerous styles every year. This year too the collection was created out of loads of sequins, prints, lace, velvet, brocade with stunning embroidery. Rich colours like beige, golden, bottle green, peach, red and copper were used to create the outfits. I admire that one can seldom grow bored of Sabyasachi’s creation as they look amazing in any given season.

Ritu Kumar

Ritu Kumar in collaboration with Reliance Jewels showcased the latest designs for Label & her signature line ‘Ritu Kumar’. The ‘Label’ collection was inspired by the beautiful land of ‘Bhutan’ as the livid colours were a prominent feature. While Ritu’s Bridal collection was done up in softer colours & had abundance of lace work.

Kaftans, Anarkali, Lehenga, knee length dresses, pants, shirts and jackets were the styles in this collection. I do like the colourful outfits but felt the Indianwear required something more creative…….the designs felt too simple. The lace detail work is what we have witnessed in numerous other collection. I am all for the ‘Bhutan’ inspired outfits but unfortunately was looking out for something new in Bridalwear.

Rahul Mishra

How to create an exquisite collection from Indian handloom??? This is what Rahul Mishra does best every year when he introduces his new collection on the runway. This season was no different where Rahul Mishra created an entire collection out of Chanderi & Maheshwari weaves. Sarees, cholis, Palazzo pants, Jackets, Anarkalis were the main highlight of his collection.  Floral Motifs were the beautiful designs weaved into the fabric in golden & silver.

This collection was devoid of any heavy embellishment or embroidery while emphasis was given more on the drapes. The bright colours like rani pink, saffron, haldi yellow were stunning and very ‘Indian’. Love the fact that Rahul can make Indian weaves come to life in such a contemporary way. Love the outfits!!!

Day 3 at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013

The past 2 days prove that the same designs do not work every single time………..fashionistas only get impressed with something new. Many established designers seem to have forgotten this mantra………with so many talented designers out there, one has to offer new every single show. I was not impressed by the works of many established designers as their designs seemed regular & not even that creative. Hence only the designers who offer fresh designs, get featured in this space.

Amit Aggarwal

Moulding, metallic & magic were the 3 aspects of Amit’s latest collection . There were plenty of futuristic gowns, sarees, jackets & flowy skirts with metal detailing. The colours were dark and the feel was ‘Gothic’……..the models were styled in pulled back hair that sported metallic maang tikka. Butterfly motifs were a prominent feature in some outfits which were presented in a very demure way.

Love the gowns in this collection……..Amit has experimented alot with metal for his latest work which leaves you desiring for more. The designer has stuck to the theme and not gone overboard with mixing other unnecessary patterns.  Very contemporary and different from what I have seen so far this season.

Day 2 at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013

After a fresh start to LFW, Day 2 looked even more promising. The upcoming talent are ambitious than ever with their new creations and I must say they do impress in a good way. Here is a look at the designers who stood out of the rest on Day 2.

SOUP by Sougat Paul

Sougat offered his latest collection titled ‘Decoding Zellige’ inspired by Moroccan architecture. Unlike other collections inspired by Morocco, this one came across as more subtle & thankfully not loud. The colours were a stunning blend of pastels with black, purple and orchard yellow. The detail-work & embellishments were kept limited to the bodice & hemlines while grand neck pieces completed the look with an elegance.

I loved Sougat’s latest works for the simplicity it had yet looked very contemporary on the runway. The new age sarees get my vote in this collection while the flowy skirts are a must have. The colours, the styling and the clothes were alluring………not much to complain about a neat & clean collection which has a feel good factor to it.

Shantanu Goenka

Though I have never featured Shantanu’s collection earlier on this blog, I just felt different about his latest collection ‘Kruhun’ for the sheer fact that the outfits oozed with richness. Though for some outfits I could just say it was a cross between JJ Valaya & Sabyasachi but I loved the heavy detail-work used in this collection. The regal collection was primarily done up in black & golden……….consisting of traditional menswear, sarees, lehenga, jackets & angrakha.

I loved the variety of menswear in Shantanu’s work………..I find it fits amazing for the upcoming festive season. There were plenty of animal prints. paisley  & floral details……….not a fan of the swimwear & knee length skirts in sheer fabric. The styling was royal, the clothes were rich and bet we would get to see many of these creations off the runway too.

Talent Box featuring Arpita Mehta & Harshita C. Deshpande

Two budding talents Arpita Mehta & Harshita Chatterjee Deshpande did manage to catch IFP’s eye for using ethnic Indian work in their collection.

Arpita’s collection had mirror work on the blouses while prints were used for the sarees & lehengas. The colours were beige, pista green, lavender & powder blue.  Soha Ali Khan took the ramp for Arpita at LFW

 

Harshita took inspiration from Maharashtra as her entire collection revolved around ‘Paithani’ saree. The jackets, Anarkali and drapes were made from ‘Paithani’ & combined with other numerous fabrics. Sonali Bendre & Isha Koppikar were the show-stopper for Harshita.

Day 1 of Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013

Day 1 was a blend of veteran designers & upcoming new breed of designers………..new ideas, new patterns, new silhouette is what we are hungry for every single season. IFP takes a look at the designers whose work stood out from the rest. Surely these designers will lay the ground rules for the upcoming Festive season.

Nikhil Thampi

Nikhil Thampi had impressed us with his summer 2013 collection which had designs in sheer fabric, fish motifs & metallic accessories……that did indeed new trend. But this collection was based on contemporary Indian wear with faces of Kathakali dancers imprinted on the fabric………..there was no denying that Nikhil went back to his roots to draw inspiration for his recent works. And I thought the designer could make only western outfits………..feels good when  fashion-wise you are proved wrong…. 🙂

The collection consisted of Bolero jackets, Achkans, flare pants, sarees, demure gowns, flowy skirts etc. mostly done up in silk & sheer fabric. The colour palette had beige golden, white, black & ash grey.  My only wish would be to see more colours in Nikhil’s collection in future along with the surprise element of motifs which reflect his inspiration beautifully.

For this time, the designer has indeed has a good year as both his summer as well as festive collection have got noticed by the fashion circle. Hope Nikhil continues his fashion saga next year as well with his new ideas.

Payal Singhal

Payal Singhal has become a regular on IFP’s review of every season of Lakme Fashion Week. Her recent creations aptly titled as ‘Char Bagh’ better read as four gardens was Persian inspired was primarily done up in pastels, black, white & burgundy with hint of gotta patti work & embroidery. The motifs were a blend of monochromes & persian prints with a touch of geometry. Asymmetrical hemlines, patiala salwars & heavy detailwork around the neckline were prominent features seen in this collection.

I like the fact that Payal’s Indian wear designs are clean and contemporary. She blends the traditional well with modern and I am sure this collection will find plenty of takers.  Though the western wear is not a strong point in this collection, the Indian line makes up for it.  Payal has new ideas and is willing to experiment……that is a quality which impresses IFP.

Shilpa Reddy 

Shilpa Reddy showcased her collection ‘Suriyothai’ collection……….the name of the warrior queen of Thailand. The bright yellow & tangerine colours took centre stage while the exaggerated shoulder was a prominent Thai feature. The collection had sarees, evening gowns, skirts, lehenga, anarkalis and jackets.

Thai combined with Indians designs was a first for this season………something new is what IFP always like. Need to see more works of Shilpa in future too but this collection is a keeper for the festive season.

Anita Dongre 

There was a colour riot at the recent showcasing of Anita’ Dongre’s Timeless collection which had plenty of choices for the bride-to-be.  ‘The Jaipur Bride’ – title for Anita’s festive collection had loads of Lehengas, anarkali & sarees in bright neons colours which will make any bride stand out from the rest of the crowd.

Though I felt many designs were seen before in Anita’s collection but the heavily embellished Lehenga got my vote for this upcoming festive season. The colours were alluring and the detailing was inspired by Rajasthan.  Overall the collection was beautiful but require something off the usual  from Anita in the next fashion week.

Manish Malhotra opens Lakme Fashion Week Winter Festive 2013

Lakme Fashion Week which is one of the most awaited event in India’s fashion world, kick started with a grand opening show of designer Manish Malhotra in amchi Mumbai.  Unlike Manish’s summer collection which had loads of Phulkari work, this festive collection ‘Reflections’  reflected more of Manish’s signature detailwork. The colours had more of muted shades combined with bright hues…..the beautiful pastel colours like mint, moss, grey, baby pink with touches of maroon, rani pink, burgundy and black were the prime colours around which the entire collection revolved. The collection had lehengas, anarkalis & sarees while plenty of achkans & kurtas in menswear.

I am more in awe of Manish’s earlier collection since this one never really stood out from the rest of his earlier works. Beautiful designs indeed but I wish Manish would draw inspiration  from other parts of our country and blend more traditional fabrics from south & east India.

Day 5 at Lakme Fashion Week S/R 2013

This month that was flooded with fashion week but the fashion was absolutely new. Lakme Fashion Week came to an end a day before Holi to also launch its new product ‘Pop Tints’ range of nail paint & lipsticks. IFP gets you a review of what it loved on Day 5 of LFW.

Namrata Joshipura

Kareena Kapoor set the runway on fire as she walked for designer Namrata Joshipura in the Grand Finale of Lakme fashion Week. Loved the cutwork pieces by the designer and of course the bright neon colours. Here is a look at few pieces from Namrata’s collection.

‘Outhouse’ by Kaabia & Sasha

‘Outhouse’ a jewellery brand by designers Kaabia & Sasha showcased their Summer 2013  collection in a funky manner. The collection was divided in 2 theme…….one was called “The Retro Kinetic” had the heirloom line, which was ideal with all garments, revealing beautiful designs and styles while the second theme was outré High Street pieces that were a bold mix of gold & daring metals featuring spikes, skulls, lions, Art Deco motifs in a variety of colours. Necklace, pendants, rings, brooch, earrings, bracelets were

The fusion of modern & vintage with neons touches looked absolutely trendy & in tune with the summer season. The jewellery can be worn by women of all ages & style. Trendy designs get IFP’s vote for one of the best collections on Day 5.

Valliyan by Nitya

‘Valliyan’ which means earrings in Punjabi, this label created by Nitya Arora showcased the collection ‘Summer Love’ . The jewels were created out of semi-precious stones, glass, crystals, metal, acrylic, wood and rare materials combined with gold plated metal. Floral designs were the focus of this collection.

IFP liked the work by Nitya as the designs were very feminine, fashion forward and fabulous. I love the way Nitya has combined sharp edges with soft floral to get the desired effect of the look. My favourite is definitely the neckpieces which can be worn with both western & Indian attires. With designs like these, I hope stylists don’t have to search for accessory brands abroad in future as this fits the bill perfectly.   Looking forward to see this collection off the runway too.

After a disappointing Day 3, IFP moves on to Day 4 and finds some awesome work. The trend seen so far is the combination of bright shades with dull colours. Plus the voluminous anarkalis are on their way out as evident by the designer collections. IFP takes you through the collection which it liked of Day 4.

Payal Singhal

Payal Singhal’s collection titled ‘Taj’ is for the summer bridem who wants to make heads turn by with style. Fabrics like cotton, benarasi silks, mulmul had filigree & jaali work on them. The collection had a range of tunics, dresses, shorts, kurtis, knee-length anarkalis, sarees, skirts, lehenga, patiala salwars and beautiful dupattas. The colour palette was primarily bright tones with touches of pastels & black.

Overall I like Payal’s collection for the ‘Contemporary’ factor in the outfits……..the clothes had a very fashion forward look. Especially liked the pieces which had geometric patterns on the blouses, pants & hemline of the saree. This time around the clothes had less volume & more fit to it. Overall I think Payal’s design will make for a ‘must-have’ in bridal trousseau and also want to give her the credit that she always presents something new every single season…………which many designers don’t bother to put in that much of effort.

Vikram Phadnis

Designer Vikram Phadnis in collaboration with Swades Foundation showcased his summer 2013 collection which was inspired by Rural India. Not only did the designer display the creations which had rich detailwork by the craftsmen of Raigad & Ratnagiri, but also made these talented artisans walk the runway along with celebrities. For the hours that these craftsmen put in to create the glorious pieces, bringing them on the runway was a noble deed in order to make the world aware of their talents.

Coming back to the collection, it had beautiful saris, kurtas, lehengas, flowing cowl salwars, gorgeous dupattas, kurtas, waistcoats & clutch bags with the models wearing beautiful jewellery by Amrapali. Feiry colours like red, maroon, yellow, orange were mixed with lighter shades like beige, mustard & golden. I liked this collection for the royal look the outfits displayed. Vikram’s work has always had alot of colours but I am happy that this time he opted for pale shades. Day 3 was a disappointment in terms of new trends. Could not find a perfect collection which would make me sit up & take notice. Only a few designers had some new designs, yet still left me wanting for something exciting. Others repeated their earlier works on the runway hence IFP lists down only those designs which it liked.

With Gen Next designers making quite an impression with their new designs and the veteran designers adding the glam factor to the show………one got to see various creations from different eras. Naeem Khan

After seeing Naeem’s collection at New York Fashion Week last month, seeing his outfits on the Indian runway were equally fascinating. The designer finally got his much deserved due in his home country. The collection had gowns, dresses & kaftans in beautiful bright colours. His signature style of combining drapes with sequin detailing was the highlight of this collection.

No one does glamorous gowns like Naeem Khan……..the amount of bling is just right, the fit is amazing and the entire look of an outfit is so feminine. I had wished that Indian media and fashion fraternity acknowledge Naeem’s work in my previous article nearly two years ago. I am delighted to see his efforts being recognised here. I am sure his designs will make waves on the Indian red carpet just the way they have conquered the international scene. All IFP can say to this designer is Welcome Home Naeem!!!

Nikhil Thampi

Designer Nikhil Thampi’s collection ‘Cruise 2013’ made the shades of yellow a ‘must-have’ for this summer season. The collection which had designs for both men & women was done up in fabrics like crêpe, net, cotton and lycra. Jumpsuits, shorts, sheath dresses, flowy gown, jackets and tunics were a part of this collection.

Overall colour was the part for which I adored this collection.add to it some metallic touches in form of belts & voila you have something new on the Indian runway. The fabrics were suitable for the hot summer season yet the sharp designs caught my eye. I did like Nikhil’s work with sheer fabric and think we might get to see these designs off the runway too.

Shehla Khan

Shehla Khan’s collection titled ‘Boudoir’ was inspired by French architecture………the designer who has taken her family business of creating lace to the next  level by establishing her own label ‘Shehlaa’. The collection had dreamy dresses and gowns in pastels with crystal details. Love the short lace dresses which very sexy and elegant at the same time while the gowns were fabulous too. But I am on edge about the two piece outfits with short skirt underneath. Shehla has created fabulous looks with lace and I hope she continues to showcase new ways of incorporating this alluring fabric in her designs. IFP liked this collection.

Day 1 at Lakme Fashion Week S/R 2013

Lakme Fashion Week – Day 1 had an interesting line-up of designers. From the Gen-Next to the well known names like Manish Malhotra, Masaba, Narendra Kumar & Shivan Narresh. IFP takes a look at the collection that impressed this season.

Masaba Gupta

Designer Masaba’s Spring/Summer 2013 line from her signature label was titled as ‘Postcards from Benaras’. Unlike her earlier works which had loads of colour, this one was primarily done up in black & white with neon shades popping up here & there. The prints this season were table fans[unconventional], roses, tulips and people. The collection had a range of dhoti pants & skirts, palazzo pants, shirt dress, jackets sarees and many more.

The collection was a  fusion of Indo-western and the light fabrics are suitable for the upcoming summers. I am slightly on the edge with this collection as I do like the prints but I was looking out for more dresses in different types. I felt that Masaba’s sarees were beautiful in her collection for ‘Satya Paul’ while the sarees in this collection left me confused. The sheer blouse coupled with chiffon sarees devoid of detail work or embroidery did not create a lasting impression. As for the western wear the collection was done up amazingly especially loved the shirt dresses.

Manish Malhotra

Designer Malhotra paid an ode to Indian Cinema for completing 100 years through his Spring 2013 collection. Manish showcased the designs that reflected the black & white era to the colourful 1970s till the present day. Sarees were a prominent feature of this collection followed by kurti churidhar, anarkali, lehenga, achkans, sherwani & jackets. Numerous celebrities like Kajol, Karisma Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Hema Malini, Asha Bhosle, Zoya Akhtar, Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap,  designer Bhanu Athaiya and many more walked for the designer.

I liked this collection for the fact that it had a lot variety to choose from. This showed the versatility of the designer where he is able to create designs from any given era. Loved the cocktail sarees which were not overloaded with too much of embroidery work. The sequin details were limited to the hemlines only. Beautiful sarees just got my vote for Day 1.

Tarun Tahiliani’s initiates Lakme Fashion Week 2013

Designer Tarun Tahiliani started the Lakme Fashion Week with the showcasing of his Spring/ Summer 2013 collection at an off site location ‘Tote’ in Mumbai. The collection had tunics, kurtis, dhoti pants, anarkali, sarees, lehenga and stoles. Menswear consisted of jackets, vest, kurta and dhoti.

The essence of the designs were very Indian with touches of African tribal theme. Where Tarun’s Autumn/Winter 2013 collection was bright in tone, the colour palette in this collection was dominated by pastels. There were alot of prints on chiffon & crepe but the pastels had rich embroidery work. The pastel lehengas & sarees were like a dream as they oozed sheer elegance. Impressed with Tarun Tahiliani’s work again especially with this collection where his magic on silhouettes was evident.

Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012 – Day 5

As Lakme Fashion Week comes to a closure, I have got to say that a new breed of designers are emerging and taking over the fashion scene. I did like the some of the creations of upcoming designers like Amrita Thakur & Rajat Tangri. The fit and the detail work was impression and I hope to see more creative designs from them in future. Designer Neeta Lulla also presented her collection ‘Radha’ but unfortunately their were outfits which I have already seen on the red carpet or on the silver screen. Was expecting something new fron Neeta but I must say that I am a bit disappointed with her latest collection. But my choice for the designer of the day has to be Pankaj & Nidhi. So here are the reviews for why I loved the works of the finale designer.

Designer Pankaj & Nidhi presented their collection based on Lakme Absolute Monochrome make-up collection. Kareena Kapoor who is the face of Lakme Absolute did look stunning in their ‘fringe look’  creation. Keeping in mind the upcoming winter season, the designers had plenty of jackets, kimono style tops, shawl wraps, pants, waistcoats, asymmetrical skirts, ponchos in their collection. Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012 – Day 4

Lakme Fashion Day 4 is underway and I have to say that in these 4 days I got to see many fresh designs. Especially in Indianwear but I wish some designer would astonish me with classic western ensemble which is what this fashion week actually lacks. On Day 4 there were not many collections to like………..the ones IFP liked are:

Shyamal and Bhumika

The ‘Maharaja’ collection by Shyamal & Bhumika reflected the Mughal era. Chogas, kalidar lehengas, Sherwanis, panelled kurtas for men, embroidered kali details for saris, angarkhas, lehengas, dupattas and cholis making a dramatic impact on the catwalk. Known for their lush ornate creations, the designing duo had zardozi, metal wire, zari peeta, aari and Marodi embroidery on regal hues like  red, wine, jade, black, maroon, teal, purple, ivory, blue, ruby, champagne, beige and golden. In short it was ‘Royalty’ on the runway. IFP likes the collection which would be perfect for the upcoming wedding season plus love the fact that the designers gave alot of emphasis to the menswear collection. Embellished achkans and jodhpuri jackets combined with shawls were magnificent.

Shivan & Narresh

‘Equestrian’ was the inspiration behind designer Shivan & Narresh’s collection aptly titled as ‘Equus’.  The range consisted of mailot, bikini, dress, gown, sari, tankini, trikini, jumpsuits, shirts, bikini sari and Kaftan sari named the “Kafsuit”. Detailing was minimal with tassels and braiding while the colours were kept muted. Shivan & Narresh have set a benchmark when it comes to swimwear……..this time around they just took it a step further with excellent designs. Finally got to see some good western wear collection in terms of the style and theme. I am sure that we will get to see so of these creations on the red carpet soon. IFP likes this collection for it’s originality and gives a thumbs up to the designer duo.

‘Outhouse’ by Kabia & Sasha Grewal

‘Outhouse’ an edgy jewellery line by Kabia and Sasha Grewal presented their recent creation “Leone d’oro” at LFW which was inspired by Africa. The collection had spiked necklace with large rear pendant, cascading chains, lapel necklace, cuffs, tasselled pendants, necklace with the Peter Pan collar shape with coloured stones & collar cum belts. IFP calls their collection absolutely wild and fun. The designs were bold and contemporary. Waiting to see more from these talents girls.

I am happy the way this LFW is proceeding after Day 2…….budding designers impressing the audience while the established ones getting better with time. Inspirations are galore, which have resulted in newer designs. We have given our verdict on earlier collection……..IFP’s pick for Day 3 are:

Gaurang Shah

Kanjeevaram combined with prints………..now that is a rare combination which I have seen. ‘Ardhagini’ a collection by designer Gaurang Shah had alot of traditional Indian styles like Kanjeevaram, Kalamkari and zardosi incorporated. The look given was of 1950s & 1960s………actually reminded me of the Eastman colour Bollywood movies. The colour palette had bright hues like saffron, vermillion, red, hot pinks, green & blues. Sarees were combined with printed blouses & stoles while kurats were paired with  printed patiala salwars. Actress Kirron Kher walked the runway in a beautiful ivory-golden saree and depicted sheer elegance. Perfect styling, beautiful show-stopper and homage to Indian textile heritage……..Gaurang Shah has managed to win the runway on Day 3  🙂 IFP likes the collection for portraying the traditional weave in a contemporary manner on the ramp.

Deepika Govind

I also happen to like few creations from Deepika Govind’s collection ‘Pop Patola’. The clothes had loads of vibrant color and fun prints. Traditional weaves like ikat was used to create short dresses and jackets. Sarees had prints on the border and blouse…..IFP would like to see more of Deepika’s work in future.

Krishna Mehta

Krishna Mehta’s collection ‘Encore’ had loads of detail work in form of cutwork, embellishments, lace, embroidery and zardosi.  Fabrics like chanderi, lace, georgette, velvet , tulli created magic on stage. Kurtas were combined with pants and voluminous lehengas while the look was styled with zari belts. This was an extension of Krishna’s Resort/Summer collection but had slight twists & turns. Though few pieces had too work of detailling….how I wish the cutwork at the hemlines would be restricted. Few pieces were indeed beautiful and my love for florals did make take notice of Krishna’s collection.

Anita Dongre

Anita Dongre presented her recent collection ‘Urban Goddess’ which had weaves from Benaras, Ikat from Andhra Pradesh, blok prints from Bhuj, The show started off with western wear that had a range of dresses, pants, jackets, skirts and top. This time around I am not a big fan of the western section since this is something that I have seen in Anita’s earlier work. But Why she is IFP’s pick is because her Indo-westerns always are a cut above………..something that any person like myself would want to go to the store and buy. The voluminous skirts paired with the sexy tops did appeal to me. Also the jackets and the cute party bags looked caught my eye…………loved the jewels. Preeti Desai was a vision in white from Anita Dongre ‘Timeless’ Bridal collection. Menswear was kept simple with Jodhpuri jackets in colors like grey ad blue.  Overall I am neither too happy nor too disappointed as I expected more out of Anita’s work.  Wish she would incorporate a bit of fun and glamour in her next work.
