Alpana Gujral – Classic takes on Contemporary Form

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 25, 2011

The Mughal dynasty – one of the greatest that ever ruled our Indian soil. Though the Mughals are no more, but their legacy continues to exist in India through the beautiful architecture that we see around us, the Persian Art that they brought from far lands, the Mughal cuisine to tantalize the taste buds and the breath-taking jewelry which I consider the ultimate gift from this dynasty.

These days one gets to see jewelry designer take the modern route when it comes to designing jewelry, the traditional is often forgotten…………..but Designer Alpana Gujral is an exception. She has successfully blended the vintage with contemporary to create the most magnificent pieces.

Alpana Gujral is daughter of India’s eminent painter Satish Gujral who is a man of many talents………..she grew up seeing his beautiful works & learned to appreciate ‘Art’ from a young age. Studied at Delhi School of Art in interior designing, she later ventured into her passion of designing jewelry………….I can absolutely say that if I have to turn to a designer who has in-depth knowledge about Indian jewelry it will only be Alpana Gujral.

The amazing colours, the use of a variety of gemstones, the carving on every single piece……………it is like she treats every creation of hers as a master-piece. A person like me would want to simply  stare and admire this ‘Work of Art’. Alpana extensively uses ancient Indian style of jewelry making like Minakari, Jadau, Polki, Navratan setting……………..she gets the pieces created in Rajasthan and Delhi but showcases it around the world. She has even incorporated her father’s paintings in her creations…….’Art’ displayed in form of jewelry is unheard off…………. Such imagination makes her collection unique for every client. A lady who is known for her elegant style keeps a low profile………….I guess because her beautiful work speaks so much about her.

If I ever wanted to buy a classic piece of jewelry which I could pass on to my next generation…….it would not be the French ‘Cartier’, the American ‘Tiffany’ or an Italian ‘Bvlgari’ but a very Indian ‘Alpana Gujral’. If the Mughals still existed, I am sure Alpana would have given them a very ‘Contemporary’ look which would have made them stand out amongst other Royals.

I am truly fortunate enough to get to interact with Ms.Gujral for a short Q & A session. Despite being busy showcasing her ‘Rang Rasa’ collection in America currently, she managed to take out sometime for answering my questions. I am thankful to her for giving me this wonderful opportunity and present to you a ‘Pioneer’ in designing Contemporary Indian Jewelry in an honest way.

Q & A with Designer Alpana Gujral

Alpana Gujral [centre] with models at the showcasing of her ‘Shwetambari’ collection

1) Creativity is in your blood, but apart from your family what inspired and drew you towards the profession of jewelery making???

Alpana: My passion for jewelry and all things beautiful led me to design.  It was my desire for creative expression that took me down this path.

2) You have a range of jewelery made in Jadau, Polki, Pearls and Precious gems set in Gold & silver……….but which collection is close to your heart???

Alpana: My vision comes from my heart so it’s hard to choose. There is continuity in my designs but each piece is distinct in form.  The essence of my jewelry remains the same – feminine with floral patterns.  Each piece is a vintage revival using different variations with fresh designs and eclectic elements.

3) You have successfully presented Indian traditional jewelry in a contemporary form……….was it difficult for you to get people from abroad to notice your designs when the entire world was looking west??

Alpana: No because there is definitely a niche market for Indian jewelry abroad.  In cities like New York, Hong Kong, San Francisco there is a demand for things exotic and foreign.

With India becoming more mainstream, people are taking more of an interest in exploring products from India.   It’s this awareness and acceptance that builds the demand. The seasoned buyers are aware and will always come to my shows but it’s also important to educate the curious buyer.

4) Every creation of yours speaks of an exquisite tale, is there a story behind every new collection that you present???

Alpana: Everything and everyone has a story. I strive to capture the essence of beauty in each of my designs while also incorporating a piece of our history.  Vision for my jewelry reflects how nature and beauty come together effortlessly, they are intertwined.

As with all Art, there are no facts – only interpretations.

5) What would be your Jewelery style prediction for the upcoming wedding season???

Alpana: While jewelry trends may vary, bridal jewelry is not as volatile……it’s really the contemporary take on traditions that appeals to the bride of today.

6) Future of the jewelery label ‘Alpana Gujral’………..where do you plan to showcase your jewelery line in future??

Alpana: I have a studio in Delhi where I showcase by appointment only.

7) The label ‘Alpana Gujral’ is well known among fashionistas, but what is the personal style of the designer behind this label??

Alpana: Style to me is comfort – it should be effortless – flowing clothes with complementary jewels is my staple look.

I feel that jewelry is wearable Art and clothes are the canvas

Celebs at the Audi Launch

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 23, 2011

Celebrity endorsements are a big thing in India………no wonder why a big brand like ‘Audi’ should stay behind when it comes to launching it’s new products in the market. Audi collaborated with designer Vikram Phadnis to showcase their finest cars…….also seen were many celebrities posing for the cameras. Here is a look for your eyes only…….

Malaika Arora Khan

Malaika was dressed in a Vikram Phadnis corset teamed with leather pants…………but the look was not what I had expected to see on Malaika……….the corset is not complimenting the leather pants……..I wish Malaika would have either dressed up in a ‘Rockstar’  manner or gone absolutely traditional……….hanging between the two does no justice to this pretty lady…………..though eerily I do like her big hair look.

Vikram Phadnis also showcased his collection at the event where the models walked the ramp in his creations. Just a Glimpse of the event:

Cannes Film Festival 2011 – Day 10

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 21, 2011

Cannes is not just about beauties walking the red carpet in designer gowns looking their best…….but what we lose focus on are the people who make these celebrities look so good on the international platform. I am always delighted to see a designer walk the red carpet at Cannes with his muse. They deserve every bit of credit for the making pretty ladies look fabulous.

We had our very own Sabyasachi Mukherjee making his debut on the Cannes stage with Miss India Kanishtha Dhankar………though his outfits have already been to Cannes earlier. Sabyasachi was earlier scheduled to walk the red carpet with Rani Mukherjee but at the last moment Rani was unable to make it due to family reasons………………I would have loved to see Ms. Mukherjee in a Sabyasachi creation at Cannes……..she would have been totally amazing. But nonetheless let’s save some surprises for the future and see how did Sabyasachi fare………..

Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee with Miss India Kanishtha Dhankar

Love the dress but what is not gelling in is the traditional styling on the international arena…………I wish Kanishtha would have let go of the hair accessories & instead opted for an updo without the dupatta. This styling reminds me of an Indian Bride who is gonna enter the mandap for her pheras. People can easily get it that we are ‘Indians’ due to our beautiful ethnic looks, but when the styling screams for attention that’s when things go haywire.

As for Sabyasachi, no complaints here……………the man is dressed as himself in a sleek Achkan with an elegant shawl…………he has been able to combine ethnic Indian clothes with western styling. Plus looks fabulously different from the rest of the crowd.  Love, love, simply love the elegance with which Sabyasachi carried himself.

Karan Johar

Also seen on Day 10 was Karan Johar in what I believe he is wearing his own ‘Karan Johar-Varun Bahl’ creation. He is always amazingly dressed however I just wish he had worn a bow tie in black with these tuxedos.

Cannes Film Festival 2011 – Day 9

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 20, 2011

Day 9 will witness Freida Pinto taking over the limelight at Cannes. Here’s your look at how she looked while walking down the red carpet.

Freida Pinto

Freida Pinto came dressed to kill in a ‘Lanvin Fall 2010’ dress and looked absolutely ravishing. The event was amfAR’s Cinema Against AIDS Gala held during the Cannes Film Festival at Hotel Du Cap on May 19, 2011 in Antibes, France. The fact I love here is that where everyone else went for the gown look at this event, Freida choose a short dress which was perfect given her age. The minimum jewelery let the outfit take center stage but the shoes, clutch & belt were kept in plain black……………….hair & make-up……….I have no complaints either.

Also giving her company in this event was her Actor-Boyfriend Dev Patel who himself looked dapper in a suit.

Mallika Sherawat

Whenever I see a beautiful lady in white on the red carpet I am reminded of the phrase ‘Vision in White’ but seeing Mallika in this white feather outfit all I can think of is “What were you thinking lady???” The only thing pretty here would be the ‘Jimmy Choo’ shoes which she had also worn in golden yesterday. The dress does no justice to her figure and feels more like an Autumn/Winter collection…………….I wish Mallika would lose that big clutch of hers and the hair???…………..just don’t get me started on the hair part.

Cannes Film Festival 2011 – Day 8

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 19, 2011

After an exciting start to the week, I cannot see many Indian Celebrities popping up on the red carpet at Cannes. Nonetheless Mallika Sherawat is still attending the parties and posing for the cameras. I came across her looking like Ms. Sunshine at a party organized by ‘Hollywood Reporter’ where Jodie Foster was honored and her movie ‘The Beaver’ was screened.

Yellow is definitely the colour of spring and no wonder Ms. Sherawat stood out of the crowd but what bothers me is the too much matchy-matchy stuff here and considering the outfit in bright hues, I wish she would have opted for a more mature yet fashionable look. The golden clutch & stilettos adding too much of bling instead a pop of colour like purple would have added that much needed glamour. One thing I have to say here is that Mallika might not be in her early 20s anymore, so why dress or pretend to be one. This look simply doesn’t work for me plus the out of bed hair makes it look even more messed up.

Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor attends a private dinner on the Cavalli yacht during the 64th Annual Cannes Film Festival wearing Roberto Cavalli of course…………she looks beautiful and absolutely lady-like. Love this look of hers……….absolutely fashionable. The make-up is pretty, the hair are glam and the gown, thankfully not ‘over-the-top’.

Also got to lay my hands on Sonam’s L’oreal photo-shoot which she did just before walking the red carpet in Cannes on 15th May,2011…………….catcha Glimpse of her in a Vivienne Westwood outfit and vintage styling.

Cannes Film Festival 2011 – Day 7

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 18, 2011

I am a content soul & can very well say that Indian celebrities at Cannes were a true delight to see. Since we are nearing the end of the film festival we still have few more red carpet appearances left especially one with Frieda Pinto who is expected to walk on the 19th. My wish still remains to see more of Sonam Kapoor at Cannes………But who posed for the shutterbugs on Day 7…….let’s have a look.

Mallika Sherawat

Mallika came dressed in aqua-marine chiffon dress for the photo-call of her upcoming movie ‘Politics of Love’. Mallika Sherawat has stuck to wearing the chiffon gowns and I couldn’t be much more happier to see her look beautiful & sophisticated in this clean look. The hair, the make-up and the sexy dress……….works for me after seeing her red carpet shredded gown look. Mallika, all I can say please maintain this dazzling look…………adore it.

Cannes Film Festival 2011 – Day 6

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 17, 2011

Flawless, Flawless, Flawless……………….that’s what I call the appearance of Sonam Kapoor on the red carpet. Let’s take a look at what Day 6 holds for fashion fanatics like us.

Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor seen here attending the Chopard party at Cannes in a white ensemble & Chopard jewels. The jewels are magnificent, the dress from ‘The Row’ is too plain…….does no justice to Sonam’s figure and the hair spoils the look further more. The jewels are no doubt giving the pop of colour but the coral lips are an absolute distraction…………..I was happy for her red carpet appearance yesterday. The thing that bothers me is that the jewels are classic but the hair reminds me of a school girl……………and the two put together don’t gel. I would have given Sonam a ‘pulled back’ hair look with emphasis on eyes only while keeping the lips neutral. I honestly feel Sonam’s playful eyes are her strongest features and she make them stand out with her make-up.

Mallika Sherawat

Mallika Sherawat went coral with this ‘Max Azaria Atelier’ chiffon gown with elaborate detail work for the ‘Tree of Life’ party at Cannes………….except for the oversized clutch, Mallika looks pretty………..I have liked her more in a sexy avatar than skin show avatar. This is definitely the kind of look we want to see Mallika wear on the red carpet more often. Mallika please continue this look forever rather than going back to shocking us off our boots………

Cannes Film Festival 2011 – Day 5

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 16, 2011

After the disappointing day 4, fashionwise Day 5 was quite a relief where Ms. Sonam Kapoor walked the red carpet like a fresh breath of air. Here your look at what she wore……..

Sonam Kapoor

Sonam was a vision in white when she walked in to attend the premiere of ‘The Artist’. Sonam was dressed in a structured gown designed by ‘Jean Paul Gaultier’ which had a net mesh above the simple white strapless bodice………….a risk which certainly paid off on the international event. She is young, vivacious and can definitely carry off the outfit with utmost grace. The hair, the make-up, the jewelery everything is perfect. I am truly happy that L’oreal got some fresh new faces for Cannes especially for choosing Sonam as their brand ambassador.

Sonam was also seen at the ‘IWC presents Peter Lindberg Exhibition’ event which was also held in Cannes.Sonam wore a ‘Masaba Gupta’ saree in black & white polka dots………….I must say that I am pleasantly surprised at Sonam for selecting ‘Masaba Gupta’ creation……….she does absolute  justice to the ensemble. The saree thankfully does not look too traditional and the way it is draped it totally gives a contemporary feel to it…………….suits her well considering her tall height & frame. Love the way this saree is draped & combined with a full sleeve high neck blouse……………..I must say our very own fashionista has arrived on the international scene.

Just check out the design at the back of her blouse……………gorgeous, gorgeous gorgeous…………………absolutely love the same. Remember the saree disasters we have seen in earlier years at Cannes………….this look will help us forget them all for sure. This sort of styling of an Indian saree was much needed at international event.

At the event we also got a snapshot of  Saif Ali Khan in a ‘Tom Ford’ Tuxedo looking absolutely amazing………….just wish had his photo of him walking the red carpet. Saif was representing the brand  ‘Chivas’ at Cannes. Heres your look at how he looked…

Cannes Film Festival 2011 – Day 4

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 15, 2011

The first 3 days had more focus on Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, but now we move on to other Indian Celebrities who made their mark on the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival. Of course the highlight of Day 4 has to be Mallika Sherawat…….so let’s see whether her ‘jalwa’ worked on the international red carpet or not…….

Mallika Sherawat

Mallika Sherawat was seen dressed in black sequin lace attire when she attended the screening of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean : On Stranger Tides’ …………….this outfit makes me think that did the designer feed the dress to the dogs to create that shredded unruly effect…………..honestly I was overjoyed seeing Mallika in more classy outfits at recent White house events then suddenly she felt the need to go back to her earlier looks…………..unfortunately this look reminds me of the ‘Adams Family’ and Mallika of the Mrs. Adams……….I wish Mallika would have opted for another Shahab Durazi outfit which makes her look classy. The hair & make-up??? Let me get past through the dress first, then only I can notice the updo & make-up.

A red carpet rule : If your inner wear is very much visible to the public eye, please do not think yourself to be a ‘Red Carpet Goddess’………..such a look is better left behind closed doors.

Shekhar Kapur, Ronnie Screwvala & Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

Shekhar Kapur arrived at Cannes Film Festival in a more Indian Avatar of silk kurta with a jacket for the screening of ‘Bollywood – The Greatest Love Story Ever Told’ . The project is backed by UTV Motion Pictures and co-directed by Bollywood filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra also dressed in Indian attire of Achkan and American documentary-maker Jeff  Zimbalist. Ronnie Screwvala on the other hand went in for a bandhgala suit…………………out of the three I would go for Ronnie’s style which spells elegance all the way though I do like Shekhar’s attitude of being comfortable in his own skin.

Cannes Film Festival 2011 – Day 3

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 14, 2011

Though Day 2 failed to impress me, Day 3 brought new hopes in terms of fashion.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Aishwarya wore a ‘Lanvin’ brown colour short dress  with ankle strap heels for the announcement of her upcoming project ‘Heroine’ directed by Madhur Bhandarkar……I feel the dress was absolutely age appropriate and thankfully not ‘loud’ at all. Just wished that she had worn this dress with a leather belt instead though that’s me trying to style her. Make-up is totally subtle and her straight hair give a natural look. Casual yet classic………….for a day event like this, I feel Aishwarya has hit the bullseye……………I am totally over her Day2 ‘Armani Prive’ look.

Also seen at the photo call were Director Madhur Bhandarkar & UTV CEO Ronnie Screwvala…………though Madhur seems to be ready to ride a bike on this photo call with the jacket look, Ronnie was more appropriately dressed for the occasion in black. Madhur you have had Rita Dhodhy giving you style advice during the making of ‘Fashion’, hope you make it a point to follow it.

Cannes Film Festival 2011 – Day 2

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 13, 2011

Cannes Film Festival is in full swing where Day 1 saw Indian Celebrities like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Minissha Lamba walk the red carpet…………….let’s see what Day 2 looks like.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan walked the red carpet in ‘Armani Prive’…………honestly I am not digging this look of hers since the gown is just not her, it is way too simple…………the hair is too beauty pageant style, the accessories are too less as it would have been helpful to add a touch of bling at least on the neck line. I prefer the Day 1 look over this plain look………..the only thing worth noticing has to be the cuff……..the rest fails to make an impression.

As of now I am eagerly waiting for the red carpet appearance of Saif Ali Khan who reportedly will be wearing a Tom Ford Tuxedo………..hope he surprises me in a pleasant way.

Also seen Hollywood actress Rachel McAdams wearing ‘Amrapali’ cuffs at the Cannes Film Festival…………the piece of jewelery is very beautiful. Rachel seen here with actor Micheal Sheen for the screening of ‘Sleeping Beauty’

Cannes Film Festival 2011 – Day 1

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 12, 2011

The evening gowns, the structured hair, the breath taking beauties and of course movies…………….Cannes Film Festival is here……..OF course this year also my focus is on our Indian Celebrities and Indian Designers. Cannes Film Festival started on 11th May, 2011 and will continue till 22nd May, 2011………….many Indian Celebrities will walk the red carpet at this event. So heres what the Day 1 looked like.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Like many others, I eagerly  wait to see what Aishwarya would be wearing to the Cannes Film Festival……………….this year she would be completing a decade at Cannes which in itself is a big achievement. Hope to see her in her best  element at the red carpet. The first day saw Aishwarya wearing a one-shoulder lace Elie Saab Spring- Summer Collection 2011 on the red carpet but I am somehow not that fond of the extra Lace detail on the waist……….I feel it did not give that desired slimming effect………….the gown without the same would have worked amazingly…………but that’s just me.  Nonetheless hair, make-up, the colour, even the fabric of the gown is flawless. You go girl…………

Also seen at the Cannes Film Festival was Minissha Lamba………..here’s your sneak peek at what she wore on the red carpet….

Sanchali – Vintage meets Contemporary [May 2011]

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 6, 2011

My favourite thing to do whenever I am in India is to flip thru the pages of a newspaper or magazines and get to know things which are new here. That is exactly when I came across Dakshayini Gowda’s creations in which she had beautiful jewelery out of old, unused material. A piece of embroidery was a contemporary earring, the saree zari was made into an eye-catching neckpiece, pendants created out of Indian brocade……..now that’s what I call creativity.

Imagine an old Benarsi saree of your mum……….hmmm ok grand-mom which has elaborate work all over but now you don’t find it too fascinating to wear or maybe it got damaged…………what would you do with it??? Ideally anyone of us might end up giving it away or throwing it. But have we ever given it a thought that this valuable saree might make the most beautiful piece of jewelery you might ever possess???? That’s exactly what Dakshayini did……………….and voila here she is as ‘Find of the month’ on Indian Fashion Police.

Sanchali started by Dakshayini Gowda is not just into Hand-crafted jewelery but also into personal accessories, Art revival and educating the children from various schools about it. Dakshayini who has single-handedly initiated ‘Sanchali’,  has managed to fuse the vintage with the new style. She has done her masters in Archealogy & Museology from Maharaja Sayaji Rao University in Baroda, Gujarat…………..this talented young lady is skilled in making Clay models, Plaster casting, Fibre glass work, Painting, Metal casting, rubber moulding. Not only that, she also knows the traditional crafts back of her hand like Batik printing, Paper Mache, Textile printing, Leather Puppetry, Terracotta, Traditional Indus Valley bead making………………the list is endless such a talent powerhouse she is…………..And I can hardly scribble few lines on the canvas let alone create something pleasing to the eye……………..sigh. Need to take lessons from Dakshayini…….

Here’s a look at one of her collections which are made of recycled and eco-friendly material like cloth, beads, sequins, seeds etc. Her collection is inspired by nature, temple and places in India like Varanasi.

I have been fortunate enough to interact with upcoming talent of my country…………last month it was Divya Thomas of ‘Karma Suthra’, this month it is Dakshyini Gowda. Here’s my interaction with Dakshayini about ‘Sanchali’

Q & A with Dakshayini Gowda, Creator of Sanchali

1)    What inspired you to start off with ‘Sanchali’???

Dakshayini : I think it’s my educational qualification that helped me get inspired. I have done my Bachelors in fine arts, Masters in Museology and Archaeology. During my studies I travelled a lot to villages and saw the talent that women had………..more often they created amazing items out of leftovers.

My Bachelors degree helped me in designing and creation of jewelry with woman from rural villages. My Masters degree helped me in shaping out workshops for children from rural areas of India. In my course I had the opportunity of working with craftsmen to produce Indus valley pottery, textile, beads in the way people did back then around 2500bc…in the traditional way. Lots of interesting facts of that period is often not told in schools & in most part history is considered boring. So to break that I have this interactive sessions where children learn about history heritage in a very fun-filled way by playing games and other activities related to the topic of display.

I worked in Auroville for a 1 year and from there I was sent to Varanasi to work with village women on craft. With that experience of working in rural area I got back to Bangalore and started on my own project and called it Sanchali which means ‘movement’ in Sanskrit because it is the concept of a travelling museum where this workshop is taken to different schools in rural areas. These are free workshops and hence the jewelry making with women was started in which women get benefits and the sale gives us money to fund these school workshops.

2)    Was the start difficult since you had to travel to rural villages for creating your designs???

Dakshayini : Yes it was even though I worked with a local NGO. I have trained at least 60 women and I found 10 women working for me. I had to win their trust sometimes had to convince their families. Women in that area are not allowed to step out of the house to work. So all my training was at their doorstep……………. We supply them with the material and bring the finished products from their homes. Their families had to be  convinced.

But now it’s been over a year and lots more want to join us.

3)    ‘Eco-friendly’ is still a ‘new’ concept with which people still need getting used to………..how would you say it helped you in creating new things???

Dakshayini : I think the concept of re cycling has been part of our age-old traditions. I learnt it from my grandmother……………..she used to use dried seeds to make flowers. Even now in the villages you still find women creating so many things without any design background.

Eco friendly products are catching up…………….people now are conscious about what they buy and what it supports. In fact I have been getting good feed backs that it inspires me to work on more designs.

4)    Anyone in particular you would love to see wearing a Sanchali Jewellery.

Never really thought about it  but when i did ….i figured lots in particular Priyanka Gandhi, Shabana Azmi, Arundhati Roy, Kiran Rao, Bipasha Basu…n the list goes on!!!!

5)    Where have you displayed your creations in India???? From which stores can we buy ‘Sanchali’ products??

Dakshayini : In Bangalore at store called ‘Levitate’, Ambara andOrange bicycle. [Address given below]

Levitate : Mezzanine floor, 100 feet boutique restaurant 777-i, 100 feet road, Indira Nagar, Bengaluru, Karnataka 560038

Ambara : 119, Annaswamy Mudaliar Road, Ulsoor, near Lakeside Hospital, Bangalore – 560042

The Orange Bicycle : House No : 3353, 5th Cross12th “A” Main , HAL 2nd Stage, Indiranagar, Bangalore-560038

In Delhi: O-layla

O-layla : 21, Hauz Khas Village,New Delhi, India – 400016

Abroad a fair trade company in USA and LONDON

I hope Dakshayini goes on to cover not just India, but the entire world with her creations……………One word which best describes ‘Sanchali’ – ‘Beauty with a cause’…………….so if you are looking out for jewelery which are eco-friendly yet fashionable………’Sanchali’  is your destination.
