Festive Looks which IFP loved

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 14, 2012

IFP picks up few favourite  from this season’s Fashion Weeks which we are sure will rock your festive season. Colours like vermillion, coral, peach, amber, magenta and golden are favourite among designers for the year. Sheer fabrics like net are used in detailing only but fabrics like silk, chiffon and crepe still hold their own. Banarasi silk has come back in a big way this year where lehengas & sarees were made out of this divine silk handloom. Embroidery has been limited to the hemlines which is very much in vogue this season…….so you can leave behind ‘all-over heavy detail work’ outfit behind…………..opt for less.

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week 2012 – Grand Finale

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on February 20, 2012

New Collection, new designs that have been inspired by every walk of life. The Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week ended with a Grand Finale by designer JJ Valaya who simply mesmerizes with his work everytime it is presented on the runway. This time around there was an array of colors in the Valaya ‘Azrak’ collection that ranged from whites to golds to dark blues. The western outfits were done in lighter hues where as Indian wear had richer colors. The beautiful ‘Alika’ jackets which are my favorite, were teamed with sarees. JJ Valaya had Celebrities like Navin Ansal and designers like Suneet Varma, Rohit Bal take the ramp in his menswear collection. Bandhgalas, Jacket and Jodhpuris were designed in velvet, cotton, wool and gabardine with touch of monochromatic prints. Valaya never falls short of making a person feel like royalty which is how each of the celebs walking down the runway looked like. The collection was inspired by the ‘Ottoman’ era of Turkey and jewels were very ethnic India. Here is a look at JJ Valaya’s latest designs which is sure to sweep you off your feet.

Actress Kangana Ranaut graced the Grand Finale as show-stopper for designer JJ Valaya in a maroon velvet ‘Alika’ jacket looking every bit like royalty.

Rehane

Imagine combining khaki and pink colors to create a new outfit………..sounds tricky but that is what designer Rehane did for her latest collection. Silk, lace, cotton were used in khakhi color with pink detail work in a collection of tunics, short dresses, skirts, pants, top & jackets. IFP likes this collection for it’s simplicity and elegance, definitely better than Rehane’s previous collection showcased last year.

‘Mynah’ by Reynu Taandon

Designer Reynu Taandon surprised the audience with actor Govinda & his daughter Narmada walking in as show-stopper for her. This is the very first time Govinda is seen on the ramp but what made it special was the fact that he was accompanied by his daughter. Father-Duo looked good in Reynu’s creation. The collection mostly had black as the base with metallic colors & details used for the glam effect. Chiffons, cotton lycra, georgettes, leather were used in creating the outfits and the collection  was alot like ‘jungle meets the city’ since the tribal motifs, the stripes, cut-out leather spots were seen in many outfits. IFP does like the collection for it’s red carpet appeal.

Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive – Day 1

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 18, 2011

Since my childhood I used to hear that the clothes worn by the models on the ramp are not wearable in reality………..but I am amazed how the designers have proved such myths wrong……….today one can wear any design off the runway and look like a million bucks. This fashion season, one might get to see loads of festive and ethnic attire on the runway……….I am eagerly waiting for many high-profile designer creations since these designers are the ones to set a benchmark for the future in fashion. Here is your exclusive look at what each designer had to offer.

Jatin Varma

Jatin Varma’s new creation ‘Paparazzi’ inspired by the red carpet glamour. To set the mood before the show, a line of photographers clicked guests on the red carpet as they made their way to their seats. The show started to the sounds of cameras going “click click”!! Fitted gowns, flowy dresses created from silk chiffons, lace, net and sequin embellishments. The drapes were beautiful…….. better than his earlier collection presented at LFW Resort 2011, the colours were soothing to the eye and thankfully not garish. The use of square sequin details was subtle and appropriate………..gave a very fashion forward look to the silhouette.  Jatin Verma will also be presenting his collection at ‘Pret-A-Porter’ show to held in Paris.  My verdict : Wearability takes browny points from me, the collection was stylish, very feminine………… I am all for the peach, turquise blue, golden beige colours along with the animal prints.

Payal Singhal

Payal Singhal presented a very festive collection which reminded me so much about the Mughal Era…………..the outfits were very regal which any Indian women loves to wear. The bridal collection consisted of Anarkalis, short kurtis combined with patiala salwars and churidhars, lehengas, sarees all in pastels with metallic detail work for that touch of shimmer. The beautiful outfits created from fabrics like silks, tulles, brocade in sky blues, melon greens, blush rose were mesmerizing with the heavy sequin embellishments. Payal Singhal also unveiled the first look of her festive wear line for young girls, with Alea Motwane (Karisma Kapoors neice) and Rysa Pandey (Bhavna & Chunkey Pandeys’ daughter) walking the ramp dressed in the kidswear line. Singer/Dancer Shibani Dandekar was the show stopper for Payal. My verdict : I am in ‘AWE’ of this alluring collection. Two thumbs up from IFP for such a beautiful piece of ethnic work.

 Archana Kochhar

Archana Kochhar ‘s recent collection had loads of black and white with a hint of colour here & there…………what I absolutely loved were the skirts. The sequin long skirts did remind me of seeing this last year’s fashion week but Archana managed to make it look glorious by adding the sequin details and combining few pieces with a bolero style jackets. Though I am not that impressed with the too much of layering on the bodice part of an outfit………….that felt a bit too heavy, would make the wearer look bulky. Miss India International 2011 Ankita Shorey was the show stopper for Ms. Kochhar. My verdict : I am more in favour of the traditional attire than the western wear. I feel Archana has been able to give a contemporary look to the so called lehenga combined with shirts & jackets.

JJ Valaya

Eminent designer JJ Valaya showcased his recent work ‘Tasveer’ inspired by the images JJ Valaya has captured behind the lens as a photographer. This collection was also showcased at Delhi Couture Week last month. I love the ‘Alika’ jackets which are unique….a design so rarely seen in Indian fashion beautifully combined with sarees & lehengas. The detail work is so rich, it’s like seeing a work of art, the colours are so festive and the drapes need no comment at all. The menswear was even better with the subtle detail work. The sheer opulence of his work gets a bow from me……My Verdict : For people with a good taste, will definitely love JJ Valaya’s Collection. To see more of his collection click here.

Synergy One Delhi Couture Week 2011 – Day 1

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on July 23, 2011

What a wonderful way to start the Couture week with Designers like Varun Bahl and my favourite one JJ Valaya…………plus add in a dash of spice in form of Madhuri Dixit…………….Voila!! you have an amazing Day 1. Here is a glimpse of the Couture Week which started off yesterday…………..feast your eyes people. More pics on their way………..

Varun Bahl

Supposedly as per the news Madhuri Dixit was to be the show-stopper for Designer Varun Bahl, instead she cheered for him from the front row and later posed for the shutterbugs in one of his creations. I do like the fact that designers these days are turning away from having celebrities as show-stopper…………..but honestly I would have loved to see Madhuri on the ramp……..sigh………….nonetheless Madhuri looked elegant in this Varun Bahl Creation……..as for the designer, Sir could you please loose the pair of denims and opt for a formal trouser instead.

JJ Valaya

I wait an entire year just to get a glimpse of JJ Valaya’s collection………and fortunately I am never disappointed. The fact that I personally love about Valaya creations would be that they are so Indian…….the inspirations are form every corner of this beautiful country……….now how many designers can do that.

The new collection had alot of elements of his earlier creations………but when it is done perfectly then why ponder it. Every bit was sensuous, the detail work was again breath-taking, beautifully crafted and most importantly every creation was fabulously wearable. The magician has created another ‘Indian Dream’ for me.

Bridal Couture for 2011

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on December 31, 2010

Major part of my holidays actually went into seeing hindi movie which is what I dearly miss staying abroad. Another movie which impressed me after ‘Guzaarish’ has to be ‘Band, Baaja, Baraat’………………so much of colour be it in the setting, background, food or glorious clothes…………by which I come back to my favourite topic ‘C-L-O-T-H-E-S’. Bless the person who invented it…………else what fun it would be to live like Adam & Eve 😉

Like any Indian girl, I still love the idea of getting all decked up to go for a wedding, sangeet or a party in Salwar Kameez, Saree or a Kurti Jeans with bangles, jhumkis, ethnic sandals & potli. Despite being married for more than 2 years, I still yearn to wear my wedding lehenga, but do manage to take a sneak peek at it every single time I come back to India. Wedding Attire is important decision every woman makes for D-day which can make her look like a million bucks or make others look much better than her[poor thing]. I am very inspired with the upcoming year 2011 and the wedding fashion in store for all, with new and legendary designers making a beeline for wedding couture. Hope I am able to bring the best wedding fashions for the new year since every Indian girl dreams her entire life of wearing ‘The Bridal Lehenga’ or ‘Bridal Saree’ on her Wedding Day.

JJ Valaya

JJ Valaya’s bridal collection is to die for………………the moment a Valaya bride walks in, the crowd is enthralled by her grace and elegance combined with the richness of the bridal lehenga. His recent Bridal collection displayed at Pearl Infrastructure Couture Week is definitely at top of my list for must have bridalwear in the new year. The colours red & golden which are fit for any bride, take centre stage in his new collection which was inspired by beautiful Rajasthan. The exquisite traditional detail work leaves me breathless with its beauty. If you are looking for something regal, JJ Valaya’s bridalwear is where your journey would end.

Tarun Tahiliani

Tarun definitely needs no introduction when it comes to Bridal couture, for he has led the way for others. He had recently organised Bridal Couture Exposition in Gurgaon & Mumbai which got a whole lot of people together to catch the first glimpse of his recent bridal collection. What makes him stand apart is the amazingly done detail work especially with Swaroski crystals which reflect Indianess in every bit. His bridal outfits look like a dream come true and the woman wearing it on her D-day feels like a Queen. If you are the type who loves the glitz, wants to look glamorous and money is no issue, then enter the fabulous world of Tarun Tahiliani’s Bridal Dream. I put my bets on the fact that someday in the future, a Tarun Tahiliani’s Bridal outfit will be seen as ‘Vintage’ which you can surely show it off to your grandchildren………..:-)

Neeta Lulla

Neeta’s recent collection displayed at the Amby Valley Bridal Week was definitely worth a look. I am glad that Neeta is coming back to her glorious ‘Devdas’ days of blending colour and embroidery to bring out a glorious outfit. This wedding season, I would suggest brides-to-be to take a look at Neeta’s Bridal collection which has sarees and lehengas with loads of detail work. Lovely colours in magenta, pinks, mehendi greens, orange, golden and maroons were seen on the runway as part of Neeta Lulla’s presentation. So if you are the traditional type of bride who loves to mix & match colour, Neeta Lulla might be a perfect fit for your Trousseau.

Pallavi Jaikishan

Surprisingly I never thought that lace could ever suit Indian Bridal outfits……………but Pallavi Jaikishan has made that possible by using her trademark style with Chantilly lace, combining it with our Indian designs & fabrics. The outcome……..a breath-taking collection which oozes loads of grace. She has extensively used chiffon, crepes, Georgette and net with sequin work for the much-needed ‘bling’ but the outfits never looked over the top. For a bride who is in search of sophistication, Pallavi’s creations might just answer your D-day outfit queries.

Manish Malhotra

Who doesn’t want to be dressed by this amazing magician……………….why do I call him a magician, simple since his clothes transform any woman into a ‘Diva’. Every fashionista’s wants to own a classic piece of Manish Malhotra’s collection. He has brought ‘finesse’ and loads of colours to Bridalwear. One of the few designers who made women leave red, choose unlikely & different colours like peach, yellow, blue, pink, golden and so many more. He has stood out for his detail work with is very fine yet has the element of ‘bling’ in subtle tones. In his recent collection, one can find Manish using loads of gotta work, zari work, kundan, kashmiri embroidery and velvet to create a distinctive look for the bride & bridesmaids. Overall I am a fan of his Bridal designs both ‘on’ & ‘off’ ramp.

Abu Jani – Sandeep Khosla

Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla made a re-appearance after many years on the ramp during the Pearls Infrastructure Couture Week – 2010 thought their recent creations were no doubt very classic, but needed more creativeness from this talented duo. They still stand out to be one of the finest when it comes to Indian Bridalwear. This festive season they have presented a collection where classic diva & a rocker chick collide to combine a beautiful fusion in Bridal attire. There is colourful metallic sequin work on the lehengas and sarees that provide with the ‘Glitter’ to the recent collection plus the sober pale hues add a hint of luxury to the entire ensemble. The floral motifs on the outfits neatly placed added the much-required pop of colour. If you as a bride feel that you wanna be adventurous on your big day, yet retain the element of ‘elegance’ Abu Jani – Sandeep Khosla’s collection is tailor-made for your style.

 Anupama Dayal

Anupama Dayal was a surprise to me this festive season with her display of bridal collection at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive this year. With such beautiful work up her sleeve for bridal collection, I am sure there will be many takers for her designs. The fact why I am featuring Anupama’s collection in Bridal couture for next year is that it is contemporary yet very traditional at the same time. A bride who wants a bridal outfit without too much of bling can check out this collection done up in gotta detailing, metallic embellishment and motifs over Banarsi brocade, silks, Georgette and net. Plus with a variety of colours, you will have plenty to choose from. Suited well for the bride who wants to look different from the rest of the crowd on her own D-day.

Abhi Rahul

I liked Abhi & Rahul’s saree & lehenga collection displayed at Lakme Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2010 because of the festive colours and the embroidery work. Honestly if the traditional Indian Bridalwear is without detail work, there is not much fun in flaunting it. Even if the embroidery or the zari workis used to the minimum but should not be devoid of it. Abhi Rahul’s collection is for the bride who wants to dress up more subtly than be demure on her wedding day. The backgrounds have muted tones combined with bright colour sequin work. The collection has rich fabrics like silks, velvet along with rubia cotton, colourful khadi, brocade and net. I am a fan of their styling of a saree with a matching jacket as seen below. Very contemporary and glamorous yet fit for the cold Indian winters.

Anamika Khanna

For the very contemporary Bride, your search deinitely would end after looking at Anamika Khanna’s recent Bridal collection which is not for the faint hearted. If you truly wish to surprise the crowd by going modern rather than traditional, this will fit the bill. Loads of gotta & zari work with sequin work on an unlikely fabric like velvet for a rich look plus combining corsets with sarees, lehengas and even salwars have been a highlight of this collection. Angarakhas made a come back, thanks to Anamika’s creativity while the dupattas with heavy embroidered patterns on the ends, empowered the entire outfit. If you are very fashion forward & not afraid to take risks, you have just hit the jackpot.

WLIFW Spring/Summer 2011- Day 1

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 24, 2010

Day 1 started without any hindrances unlike previous time. Heres a look at what we loved for the upcoming summer season and what failed to impress me. Have a look…..

Ritu Beri

Ritu Beri is back with her latest collection which was primarily done in black & white with hints of red & pinks. Writer Shobha De was the unexpected show stopper for Ritu Beri, though it is a pleasant surprise to see her walk the runway since she is a style diva herself. The fabrics ranged from chiffon to nets with gowns, dresses and sarees included in the collection. The collection gave me a very english feel with the hats used as props and those huge frilly gowns which were very 18th century inspired but they did not seem summer appropriate to me. In fact I am still in awe of her previous collection which she had displayed during Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2010. This time around had expected more from Ritu Beri but was to some extent left a bit high & dry………..better luck next time.

JJ Valaya

JJ Valaya never disappoints with his latest collection and even this time around he has done justice with his spring collection that had beautiful Anarkali and the colour palette was dominated by pastels with touch of rani pink, navy blue, fiery reds, lemony green…………..with subtle amount of detail work to bring in the element of richness. Jackets took the centre stage in this collection with loads of colours………feast for my eyes. Overall the outfits were very wearable, the colours were fit for the summer season and the inspiration behind the collection seemed to be central India. My verdict : Beautiful collection which will find many takers.

Maharaja of Couture – JJ Valaya

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 1, 2010

‘Grandeur’ I suppose is the correct word that I use to describe JJ Valaya’s creations, the richness in the detail work leaves me breathless at times whenever I see JJ Valaya’s outfits on the ramp. He has for years kept up to his image of creating collection all of which have a lot of ‘Regal Air’ about them……………..I am sure if we still had Royalty ruling our Nation, JJ Valaya would have been their official Designer. But for the neavue rich, JJ Valaya’s clothes do the work of adding the much-needed ‘Class’ to your wardrobe as well as style.

The designer born in the culturally rich Rajasthan, raised in a family with army background and travelled to different parts of India due to his father’s postings. He along with his brother TJ Singh who looks after the operational part of the business started the label ‘House of Valaya’ way back in 1992 and since then there has been no looking back for this talented designer. His designs have won his accolades from around the globe…………….yet the designer stays down to earth as far as possible.

He is an alumnus of National Institute of Fashion Technology better known as NIFT, Delhi. He was the first Indian designer to win Prix D’ Incitation in the year 1990 which is an International competition for young designer held in Paris. From 1993 onwards after the success of starting his first store, JJ Valaya expanding his business in India as well as abroad in London, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong & Bangkok. He is also the only designer in India to have a single designer store of area as vast as 1 acre all to his creations…………pheeewww thats a lot of creations I must say.

He has dressed Bollywood also for starry occasions but he has fashionistas chasing him in order walk down the runway wearing one of his creation. But only the stylish ones are choosen to walk for him. Dimple Kapadia, Kabir Bedi, Neha Dhupia and most recently Kangana Ranaut have graced the runway for JJ Valaya. They have also worn his clothes off the ramp too. His creations have been worn by Victoria Backham on the cover of international ‘Vogue’ magazine.

Despite dressing up stars, JJ Valaya has focused more on expansion of his label and presenting newer collections to the audience. His designs have regularly featured in magazines and newspapers across India and every person up north and in west are very well aware of his name. His bridal collection is to die for with elaborate detail work and embellishment, my eyes are wide open with awe whenever he showcases his latest designs. His creations have amazing finishing along with smart styling does wonders on the runway. His mind is always looking out for new ideas which he can explore creatively that maybe his love for clothes, photography or art………….he does everything with passion.

He now has a range of brands under his belt : JJ Valaya Muse – creations prepared on request or customized, JJ Valaya – Opulent and timeless Luxury & Trousseau Collection, Valaya Home – Soft Furnishing for Home, Valaya Base – Luxury Ready to wear, Valaya Quantum – Contemporary Indian wear.

JJ Valaya creations on the Runway

Why have I chosen JJ Valaya as the Designer of the Month???? The reason is simple enough since his creations are Original to the core, Classic yet very contemporary and absolutely Indian. He is one of the pioneer of our Indian Fashion Industry and has helped to shape the same. I have seldom seen the fabulous creations that speak volumes about it’s creator. If I never wrote about JJ Valaya, I bet my teeny tiny blog will remain incomplete………………..need I say anymore. I hope his legacy continues forever…………….

I met him once only in my lifetime, even though people surrounded him for the renowned designer he is……………..must say he never showed off any airs and was very, very approachable. I believe he lets his work do the talking, rather than himself.

Visit his official website www.valaya.com to know more about him.

Pearls Infrastructure Delhi Couture Week 2010 – Day 4

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on July 24, 2010

Day 4 saw Bollywood not just cheer for the designers but to also walk down the runway for them……..Kangana looked fabulous in the JJ Valaya designed bridalwear and Anil Kapoor along with his home production ‘Aisha’ gang rocked the ramp………….though I must admit that I missed Sonam a lot since the father-daughter duo would have looked very cute on the ramp………..

Anamika Khanna

Anamika Khanna is surely very creative in her work and that reflects in her designs…………..but sometimes the mix-n-match of outfits just does not give the desired effect. Well to some extent that is what happened with her new collection…………where the pieces if worn individually would have looked much more appealing. The western designs were classy the problem was the Indianwear fused with western……………..I can say overall I was just merely satisfied by the creations since I have seen Anamika’s earlier works and feel the lady has loads of talent. But she made Anil Kapoor look so good on the ramp in the Achkan combined with churidhars. Loved that look which I feel Anil can sporton the red carpet too since even at this age he is the most graceful actor in Bollywood. As for the rest of cast of ‘Aisha’ …………..Amrita Puri & Ira Dubey looked good………the outfits suited them well but Lisa Haydon’s outfit needed more refinement since it looked like combining leotards with a glamorous dupatta………..my apologies to Anamika but that was just not appealing. I would have looked amazing it Anamika would have combined black trousers with another dark shade top and then the dupatta comes in. Overall my verdict is………’Yeh Dil mange more’ …………….hope Anamika gives us more next time around.

JJ Valaya

For people who want to see the detailed embroidery on Kangana’s Bridal attire can click on the pic below in order to zoom in. Check out the beautiful work which is by far the best work seen in this fashion season. The lehenga and the dupatta seem to have resham dhaaga embroidery combined with colourful stone & gotta work. Simply Awesome.

JJ Valaya new collection ‘Alika’ has proved that he indeed is the Guru of modern Indianwear…………..I was really happy to see his stunning creations this season which were breath-taking and definitely better than his earlier season which he had presented at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Show. But the menswear certainly confused me since the kurtas which were long enough to touch the model’s toes????? I am certainly going to overlook that fact since the detailed embroidery work was the best that I have seen so far in this fashion week……………….thumbs up for choosing the beautiful Kangana as the show stopper………she truly did justice to that gorgeous bridal lehenga and vice versa. Styling was perfect on the models and the show stopper……………sarees and cholis for the Lehengas in metallic hues…..now that is a first one, loved it. Overall this collection will go a long way and I am so happy for JJ Valaya got his groove back.
