‘BEST DRESSED’ of 2012

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on January 8, 2013

‘Indian Fashion Police’ brings in the new year with the most stylish & well dressed celebrities wwhom we have seen over the past year. Our picks for the year 2012 are based on the numerous times these celebrities have looked fabulous on the red carpet.

Deepika Padukone

DPK2

Deepika had me surprised this year with her style choices especially post her ‘Cocktail’ movie success. Loved her looks in the movie as well on the red carpet where she experimented with her looks even more. The choices of designer gowns and sarees have  made IFP sit up & take a good look at her. Deepika has transformed from a girl to a demure woman……………IFP had to undoubtedly put her on this list. Her casuals had denims teamed with sexy lace tops styled with a purse & bangles while bold gowns & sarees flattered her figure on the red carpet.

Hrithik Roshan

Hrithik

Even though we did not have many red carpet appearances but Hrithik still wooed us as he walked at Marrakech Film Festival in black Tuxedo & sleek hairstyle alongside wife Suzzane. He put in that extra effort to look good be in his clothes, his hair or his clean shaven face. That is why Hrithik makes it to IFP’s list of ‘Best Dressed’.

Sridevi

Sridevi 4

She came back and stunned us yet again just to make us realize how much we missed the actor ‘Sridevi’. Her acting skills are uncomparable but it was her dressing style which made me smile every single time she walked the red carpet. Her saree choices from Manish Malhotra & Sabyasachi were beautiful so were her western attires. She complimented each look with alluring jewellery, a clutch & hairstyle which completed her look and made her look ever  more elegant.

Kareena Kapoor

Kareena

The year 2012 was indeed a blessing for Kareena Kapoor on both personal & professional front. But this year also saw her explore new wardrobe choices. The gal who was mostly seen in Manish Malhotra outfits on the red carpet, made way for designers gowns, dresses & jumpsuits…………something which we have been longing to see Kareena in. Her make-up is always flawless, her hair are superbly styled, her nails well-manicured and her outfits are to die for. Do we need to give anymore reasons as to why Kareena Kapoor makes it to this list?

Mini Mathur

Mini

Mini Mathur might not be the Bollywood’s leading ladies but she sure stands out whenever seen at any red carpet event…………the reason : her choice of silk sarees which she wore with sheer elegance. On someone else the saree would have fallen flat, but on Mini the sarees looked fabulous especially when she paired them with stone jewellery & a batua bag.

Arjun Rampal

Arjun

Bandhgala paired with Jodhpuri pants on the red carpet of Cannes Film Festival seems like a tricky choice, but our very own Arjun Rampal carried off effortlessly. Arjun is one of the few actors who rocks the red carpet in any thing that he wears plus he has evolved in his looks as he has ages gracefully. Arjun & his wife Meher made us red carpet proud at this year’s Cannes when they both walked in wearing a Rohit Bal & Tarun Tahiliani outfits. Neat, sophisticated and ever evolving…………that’s what makes Arjun stand out in our list.

Karisma Kapoor

Karisma2

Polished, sophisticated, sexy, elegant, all combined in one is how I describe Karisma Kapoor’s style. Even though these days she is seen wearing black or pastels, she manages to grab eyeballs with her subtle style.  This mother of two has groomed her younger sister Kareena to stardom and has maintained herself as a ‘Diva’. Karisma makes it to this list too along with Kareena – both sisters are the offical muse of the eminent designer Manish Malhotra.

Kalki Koechlin

Kalki3

Kalki is the surprise entrant on the red carpet who started off looking like a ‘girl next door’ but has morphed herself to a ‘celebrity’ with amazing style sense. Why she makes it to IFP’s list is because of her quirky, unusal options which she wears to the red carpet. She is refreshingly different from the rest of the celebrities and stands on her own. A celebrity who can wear a hairband with an Indian outfit & still manage to walk off with an ease…………..which is what Kalki did at this year’s Cannes.

How to look good while you are expecting?

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on November 25, 2011

Who says woman who are expecting cannot look stylish? Here are few celebrities who have rocked in every type of silhouette while proudly showing off their baby bump.

Embrace layers but don’t go overboard with adding too much of fabric in order to hide the baby bump. You might just end up making it look more prominent. Try the traditional silhouette like an ‘Anarkali’  which will help you to show off the bump in a subtle manner. Lara Dutta does look graceful in the ‘Anarkali’ above at a recent event.

Opt for brighter shades to peep up your mood since one might get alot of mood swings during this happy. Channel happy mood by wearing cheerful colors like yellows, reds and pinks. You can also try wearing floral prints but avoid larger prints and gloomy shades. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who has recently delivered a baby girl, knew how to look cheerful & glowing in a rani pink saree.

Avoid too fitted silhouette since you might wanna announce to the world in a delicate manner. So try flowy fabric like crepes, silk, chiffons, cotton instead of clingy ones. Padma Lakshmi definitely knows how to flaunt her baby bump in a satin top paired with black leggings & boots.

Show of other assets as well which you might end up not focusing on like your legs, your toned arms or your sexy decolletage. Put on your best accessories and shoes  while you walk out that door beaming with confidence. Love Karisma’s look wherein she gave emphasis on her legs by wearing a churidhar that also helped her look slimmer.

Shoes play a very important role for all ‘mother-to-be’ since during these times comfort is top priority. Try platform which do not exceed more than 1 & 1/2 inch, ballerinas or flat sandals. Proper grip of the shoe is a must since that minimizes the risk of falling. There are so many variety of shoes available for expecting mothers in a wide variety of colors. Kajol wore comfortable golden platform slip-ons at a book launch while she was expecting.

Hello! Hall of Fame Awards 2011

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on November 10, 2011

Hello! magazine had organized ‘Hall of Fame’ Awards at the Trident hotel in Mumbai and all the fame monsters made their presence felt wearing the most stylish designer. A glimpse of the red carpet of this event.

Deepika Padukone looked red hot in this feiry red ensemble by designer ‘Gauri-Nainika’………the structured hair do, the make-up and the dress of course, all looked fabulous. L-O-V-E this look…………..this is what celebs should look like when they walk down the red carpet at any award event.

Kajol walked the red carpet in a ‘Manish Malhotra’ saree but had me on the earrings which were somehow not looking well co-ordinated with the outfit. Wish she would have opted for chandelier jadau earrings and cut out the net sleeves. The saree though was a pretty one. The clutch is of ‘Malaga’ by Malini Agarwala who has also featured in our ‘Interview with Designer’

SRK who I think would be dressed in a Karan Johar-Varun Bahl creation worked the 3-piece suit well. I dig his choice of sleek suits which are always well fit and stylish. Black remains his color of choice but how about trying Monochromatic prints for a change?

Sonam Kapoor walked the red carpet in a Gucci gown which somehow felt flat on this lovely lady. Have seen Sonam do better but here the  ‘out-of-place’ hair spoils the entire look plus the oversized clutch is no good either. Wish Sonam would have opted for a pulled back hairdo and a glittery tiny clutch for complete her look.

Karisma knows how to stunn fashionistas when she walked in wearing this LBD. She remains my eternal favorite celeb who knows what actually looks good on her. The pulled back hair works well plus the make-up is subtle. Karisma is looking every bit ‘Divalicious’. See her full length pic below and be a judge about the looks of the 2 pretty ladies

Women love men who are always sharply dressed………………………..no wonder why we cannot get enough of Rahul Khanna. Only he could carry off this shiny grey jacket and make it look so good. Me liking this look…………and you?

Jacqueline Fernandez wore a ‘Givenchy’ feather dress with a lace belt but funnily even her hairdo is styled like the feathers. She looks stylish and does absolute justice to this outfit. Like it……..

Madhoo in a ‘Herve Leger’ outfit but the bright color clutch is quite a distraction. The print ‘Herve Leger’ is enough to grab attention……………..the ‘pop of color’ was not needed. Other things aside,  Madhoo does look good in this outfit.

Queenie Singh in a ‘Jatin Varma’ dress certainly looks good. Thank god she did not opt for one of those short dresses……..this print dress from Jatin Varma’s  recent collection compliments her body yet makes her look like a ‘Diva’………..Way to go Queenie.

Gayatri Oberoi wore a black off shoulder gown with emerald jewelry but the improper fit of the silhouette marred the entire look for this beautiful lady. Plus the accessories and the clutch are not of much help too. But I do like the fact that Gayatri dresses up very gracefully on the red carpet.

Celebrities at Lakme Fashion Week

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on August 23, 2011

Celebrities and fashion fraternity have always been like ‘Ying & Yang’……..one is incomplete without the other. Celebs have graced the runway every season since the inception of Fashion week, but what I find more interesting is to see them off the ramp and on the red carpet. That is exactly when my devil’s horn come out and mind spins into action mode. Let’s catch up on what the celebrities wore for the big event:

One got to see Karisma Kapoor on 2 days at LFW where she had come in to cheer for her neice and sister Kareena. Seen wearing a white ruffle collar top with blue denims and a b/w bag…….no one can do the basic white shirt better than Karisma. As I always say, Karisma is all about ‘Class’ and she reflect a good one in the above outfit…….

Though her look on the LFW -Finale Day could have been better since the top was more of a dress combined with skinny jeans………..I missed the glamour factor in this outfit. This one appears more of what one can expect Karisma to wear on a casual day……….for a Fashion Week, I wished she would have put on a more alluring attire to woo people.

Twinkle Khanna also attended the LFW where she was seen in a black & white attire……….nothing much to ponder over but I do like the ‘Scorpio’ brooch that she had accessoried her top with. Rest was too casual for a Fashion Week………ladies please dress up a bit more fashionable.

Neil Nitin Mukesh who came in dressed in a suit designed by Designer ‘Narendra Kumar’ looked undoubtedly handsome. The suit is all shimmer but other things are kept matt which works well here……..I am never in favour of men sporting a stubble on the red carpet, but in Neil’s case I make an exception.

Queenie Dhody had daughter Tiara Dhody for company at the recent LFW………..now here is the truth, they both look like they are best buddies dressed in similar style, unfortunately the hemline of Queenie is shorter than her daughters, talk about age-appropriate dressing…………..I am literally bored of seeing Queenie do the short dresses at every red carpet event………..need a change.

And I at last get my wish of seeing Ms. Dhody in pants coupled with a ruffle top and a ‘Hermes’ belt to grab the attention to that slim waistline. Like it for sure………..hope to see Queenie in more of these in future.

Also seen at Sabyasachi’s showcasing of his collection was Vidya Balan. Vidya is obviously wearing a ‘Sabyasachi’ creation. The peach blouse with a white saree reminds me of vintage fashion which a timeless beauty like her can carry off gracefully………though I am not a fan of her black potli bag……but that is just me.

Katrina Kaif choose a ‘Manish Malhotra’ creation when it was time for her to attend the LFW. We have seen this same look at the Filmfare awards where more than half of the actresses were dressed in floor length anarkalis. Not a fan back then, not a fan now either.

The ever so ‘Hot’ Sridevi confirms her star status every single time she steps on the red carpet……….despite the fact that she has not had a movie come out for more than a decade but she can certainly give new comers a run for their moolah. Sridevi attended Sabyasachi’s show in a Sabyasachi saree………..’Divine’ is one word for this ‘Diva’.

Best Dressed Women in 2010.

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on January 5, 2011

Considering that last year was full of fashion weeks and glamorous red carpet events, there have been many stylish women from across our country trying to look their very best…………….how many of them actually succeeded???? Well the number is quite low since many of our celebs are brand obsessed and never care to look if the outfit actually suits them well or not. There were however few beautiful women who got my attention when it came to dressing up for the event. These women have made it to my list of ‘Best Dressed for the year 2010’.

Karisma Kapoor

Though she is not doing films anymore, but she can still give other younger actresses a run for their money. The reason why she is on my list for 2010, is that she puts in a lot of effort to look good even during her pregnancy. I am truly her fan since my teens when I used to dance around her ‘Le gayi Le gayi’  song from ‘Dil to pagal hai’. Sister Kareena Kapoor too dresses to the nine every time she is on the red carpet, but there is an elegance in Karisma’s style. Whether she dresses up in a party wear or simple dresses down in her casuals, she still manages to maintain the ‘Wow’ factor in her look. She most of the times dresses up in Manish Malhotra’s outfits who has been a helping hand in transforming her into a Glam Queen. She is one of the celebrities who has inspired other women that motherhood does not mean compromising with looking amazing, hence in my list she will always be a top style ‘Diva’ of all times.

 Rani Mukherjee

Surprising isn’t it to put Rani Mukherjee on this list, but can anyone actually remember her not dressing up and looking good last year???? I simply cannot plus let us not forget that she was one of the first actresses to introduce us to the talented Sabyasachi Mukherjee on the silver screen. She has been seen at many recent events dressed in her very best looking better than ever. Long gone are those outfits which used to make her look older than her age. In comes the fashionable short dresses, pencil skirts, jump suits, flared pants, funky denim, unusual saree patterns………..loads of new addition to her wardrobe. And I must say that on her petite frame, I am loving her new ‘avatar’. She has been trying hard to make a successful comeback, with this style of hers I am sure people will be more than happy to have her back.

Kalyani Saha Chawla

Her name has become synonym with the brand ‘Christian Dior’ or ‘Dior’ for which she is the brand ambassador. Another feather to her ‘Dior’ hat would be styling Sonam Kapoor for the fashionable movie ‘Aisha’ with the glam outfits, shoes and bags to die for.  I have never seen her dress in anything obnoxious in any event………………her look is all the way sophisticated, classic yet very contemporary. She dresses in outfits which compliment her rather than just following fashion like the rest of the crowd. Maybe that is why she always stands out in events despite not being an actress.

 Malaika Arora Khan

Malaika Arora Khan needs no introduction where fashion is concerned. She experiments a lot and takes risks with her looks which very few people in the public would dare to do. Her style quotient is ‘demure’  in whatever she wears. If the dress is short, then the shoes & the clutch take centre stage, if it is an indianwear then the back and the fit of the silhouette will be given more emphasis than the rest of the dress or if it is a gown then the jewellery will be the focus. I cannot think of any dull moment last year when Malaika was not dressed up to our expectation. Her hair are done, her clutch and shoes is very much ‘In vogue’ and her make-up is flawless. Be it on the cover of a magazine or any red carpet event, all I can say that ‘Munni’ absolutely ‘rocks’.

Twinkle Khanna

Twinkle Khanna has totally revamped herself…………………..I remember the days when she had started in the film industry when she had the horrible hairstyle combined with the neon colour ill-fitting clothes plus to keep up to the expectations of her mother’s glamorous image in the movie industry. I am glad today when I see her in any red carpet event all dressed to kill. Today give her any dress to wear and she turns out like a queen wearing them…………her style includes knee-length dress in fabulous colours that compliment her skin tone, anarkalis or short kurtis paired with churidhars, pants with tops that usually emphasize the upper half of her body and loads of amazing designer jewellery. With Twinkle now following her mother’s footstep in style department, she definitely gets thumbs up from me as the Best Dressed Woman.

Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor is like a breath of fresh air in this filmi dunia where style revolution is just getting started. I have never seen anyone wearing vintage Indian jewellery with western outfit and still look like a million bucks. I think style is something she inherits from her mother who is herself quite a ‘Diva’ though she does not come out much for red carpet events. Her penchant for designer wear makes every woman gush with envy plus her ‘to-die-for’ accessories like jewellery, shoes or bags………………..I can’t have enough of it. I actually look forward to her red carpet appearances since she always surprises me with her attire yet remains classic all throughout. At her age, she has got every style fundas right.

 Gayatri Oberoi

Gayatri Joshi nee Oberoi had made quite a charming start to her movie career with Swades then suddenly she disappeared to be married to renowned builder Vikas Oberoi and have two children. But I never thought that her come back as a socialite would be so pleasing to the eye. Gayatri is every bit of sophistication these days…………….she wears outfits with clean-cut, sober colours and is never too flashy unlike other wanna be socialites. She does experiment but never goes to extremes since she sticks to what suits her best rather than be fashion crazy. Cocktail dresses, pants, sarees, designer salwar kameez and churidhar are what she is mostly seen in. All I can say about her to other fashionistas is keep it simple yet elegant……. that too much of wealth does not mean you have to show it off to the limit.

Feroze Gujral

Feroze is the quintessential ‘Fashionista’ since the time she first appeared in Digjam Suitings ads in late 1980s. I maintain one thing that she stills looks the same…………….I somehow find her growing younger as each day goes by. She is daring in her style but whatever she wears seem to suit her well. Gowns, skirts, flowy dresses and pants are her style must haves. she is also a writer for many leading newspapers & magazines. One of the few socialites from Delhi who I believe to be ‘est Dressed’on all occasions.

Princess Diya Kumari

Princess Diya Kumari from Jaipur might not be a regular on Page 3 but she has her presence felt every time she is on the cover of a leading magazine or in the newspaper supporting a cause. She is seen regularly in gorgeous chiffon sarees, in a Royal attire, a Salwar Kameez or a designer Sarees when posing for the magazines. Her Grandmother Rajmata Gayatri Devi was known for her beauty and fashion sense. Princess Diya Kumari seems to be carrying on the legacy. As elegant as she is, my wish remains to see her more often in social events where we can catch a glimpse of those amazing Sarees. I am sure that she will be a delight for many of our Indian designers who can design their best for her.

Who looked ‘Hot’ at the HDIL India Couture Week 2010???

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 12, 2010

There were few women who looked amazing on the red carpet of the HDIL Indian Couture Week 2010, rest everyone else left me high & dry with their styling. Let me make some of you understand that you need to take red carpet events seriously and it doesn’t matter if you wear a non designer outfit or a designer outfit…………….the final aim should be to look good no matter what. And please never go extreme with your make-up, hair or accessories……………too much is definitely not required here. Women who understood this fact have made to this list……………..see for yourself why they looked ‘Hot’………….

Twinkle Khanna

Twinkle Khanna has never looked better till date. Her transformation from a former movie star to a superstar’s wife has been superb. At HDIL India Couture Week 2010 Twinkle Khanna wore a ‘Kay Uger’ outfit with Alexander McQueen’s ‘The Britannia’ clutch for that much-needed pop of colour and those shimmer open toe heels. My Verdict : She looks like a vision in white and the outfit is very event appropriate.

Karisma Kapoor

Karisma Kapoor wore this amazing one shoulder top in red paired with black pants, glittery clutch and a black heels. Simple, elegant and to the point. Karisma definitely knows what good style is………………..her style never screams for attention yet manages to get plenty in subtle manner. I have maintain that she is one of the few celebrities in the Indian Fashion scene who knows what looks good on her and is not a fashion victim but a classic diva.

Suzzane Roshan

Check out Suzzane Khan in a glittery ‘Herve Leger’ bandage dress which is so different from what the other celebrities and wanna bes usually wear on the red carpet. I like the way this dress looks on Suzzane since she has kept the accessories to the minimum and let the dress do all the talking. No one else could have carried it off as well as Suzzane did……….

Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi in yellow was quite unexpected but what a pleasant surprise this is……………….this one shoulder Raakesh Agarwal outfit is absolutely complimenting Sonakshi’s skin tone. Plus she has just worn golden earrings to add a bit of glitter to this outfit. The shoes were kept in nude tones…………..on the whole love this look of Sonakshi.

Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor is wearing a vintage dress which costs only US $25 but beats out any other designer wear. With her mother’s heirloom vintage neck piece and Valentino heels who could have rocked this outfit better than Sonam??? Sonam has made me believe that it is not necessary that fashion has to be worth thousands of dollars but a classic little black dress like this one can be red carpet appropriate if worn with proper accessories and hairstyle. This 1960s inspired look gets two thumbs up from me…………..Sonam you rock girl!!!!

HDIL India Couture Week 2010 – Being Human

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 10, 2010

Salman Khan’s initiative ‘Being Human’- a charity event, had a bevy of bollywood beauties walking the runway and taking the audience through the past era of style. Salman Khan also joined the leading ladies of Bollywood with Karisma Kapoor, Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta, Sushmita Sen, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu………….beauty, beauty all around……….

Have a look at what every Bollywood hottie wore and represted which era, of course Sallu bhai also made his presence felt as he too strutted down the ramp………….

Preity Zinta as the 1920s Glam Queen

Our very own Peezee aka Preity Zinta looked lovely in a Ruchika Pandey outfit, a vintage hat, satin gloves and a feather to add a pop of colour to the entire black get up. Nobody could have pulled out this look so effortlessly as Preity did. She also walked the runway wearing a denim skirt, boots & ‘Being Human’ top toward the end.

Katrina Kaif is 1930s ‘Diva’

Katrina Kaif wore an alluring red gown designed by Gauri & Nainika as she walked the ramp for ‘Being Human’ represting the 1930s era…………..as much as I love the gown, I feel the outfit was paired with wrong shoes………..the strappy pair were more suitable for Indian attire than this divalicious outfit. Ona more casual front, Katrina wore a pink top with a pair of jeans…………..

Rani Mukherjee as 1940s ‘Classic Belle’

Rani Mukherjee all dressed in classic 1940s velvet chiffon lehenga in black & white designed by Manish Malhotra reminding us of the B/W movies as well. I am digging this look of hers……………she simply looks magical. Rani wore an orange ‘Being Human’ top paired with denim and seemed to be enjoying herself at the event.

Bipasha Basu as the 1950s ‘Sexy Siren’

Who better can you have to represent the 1950s era than Bipasha Basu since the glam factor was just coming into existence in the 50s……….Bipasha Basu walked in wearing a Sunaina Puri outfit looking ‘Oh so Fabulous’. Bipasha wore a yellow ‘Being Human’ top with a pair of denim shots…………Hot!!!! I say……..

Karisma Kapoor as 1960s ‘Flashback Goddess’

Karisma Kapoor was fit as a fiddle when she came all dressed in a Manish Malhotra creation which reminded me of yester year actress Mumtaz. She indeed looked splendid and even more in her casual avatar – green ‘Being Human’ top and jeans………..Two thumbs up for this beauty who rocks.

Sushmita Sen as 1970s ‘Hippie Hottie’

Sushmita Sen seen after ages on the ramp, represented the the 1970s era wore a Raakesh Agarwal orange shimmer number. The leggy beauty really reminds me of Zeenat Aman’s haydays. She was dressed in a blue ‘Being Human’ top with jeans and black boots. Grrrrrrrrrr……………

Priyanka Chopra as 1980s ‘Rockstar’

Remember Madonna anyone???? Priyanka Chopra so much reminds me of her……………..dressed in Sunaina Puri outfit along with net gloves. She definitely portrays the 1980s era…………..equally rocks in her casual avatar in a aquamarine ‘Being Human’ top and shots.

Kareena Kapoor as the 1990s ‘Sexy Daredevil’

Kareena Kapoor dressed in all black Varun Bahl creations complete with a hat & a whip reminds me of the hunterwali from circus, who is ready to tame the handsome Saif……………wink, wink just kiddin. But she can carry off this sexy look with that attitude…………….dons a purple ‘Being Human’ top with jeans………Hot! Hot!Hot!

HDIL Couture Week 2010 Bash

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 6, 2010

Another couture week is here but in my opinion I feel we should limit ourselves to a maximum of 2 couture week per year that showcase all designers………………why do we need so many couture week where one gets to see the same designs, the same designers and of course the same celebrities again………………have we become addicted to couture weeks???? Do we love fashion so much that the sense is going out the window???? I often ask myself these questions but for the sake of fashion, I am ready to let go of this Q & A session in my mind………..

The HDIL couture Week 2010 started with a bash held at Grand Hyatt.

Shahrukh & Gauri Khan along with Rani Mukherjee

Shahrukh Khan with lady love Gauri an friend Rani Mukherjee posed for the cameras………..Shahrukh dressed in a brown shirt and black trousers looked quite ready to party the night, Gauri in a beautiful red Valentino and Rani in a short aquamarine dress designed by a Greek designer…………….all three looked good on the red carpet especially Rani since the outfit fits the bill for her petite frame. As for Mrs. Khan, I would have opted for a shimmer black or grey clutch plus shoes……………..Shahrukh was at an ease when it came to dressing up, but hey it is just a bash………….

Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone who is our Style Star for the month, wore a satin beige one shoulder top with black fitted skirt and satin heels with rosette on them……………..on the whole I am not digging the look because of the shoes and the lack of glamour in her look. It gives vibe that one is trying to minimize the sexiness quotient in this outfit by adopting a ‘girl next door’ make-up & hair. I would have prefered if the top would have extended hemlines till knees and acted as a short cocktail dress…………Plus those shoes just don’t gel that well……………..though love the one shoulder top along with the crystal clutch……………..but a beautiful soul like Deepika needs to look glamorous by adding the accessories.

Raj Kundar & Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Shetty also made an appearance with hubby Raj Kundra in tow but I have to say………….why does Raj always have that messy look on his face??? With such a fabulous looking ‘biwi’ as arm candy, he should dress to the core complete with good personal grooming. I feel that he should either go in for a beard or no beard…………….the style ‘in between’ does not suit him at all. Whereas I have no complaints about Shilpa………………she looks perfect in her Little black dress with gold trimmings and loooooooooooooovvvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeee those shoes. Must say that combining black and golden in western wear is not easy and Shilpa knows how to do justice to it……………Mr. Kundra would expect you to clean up next time.

Karisma Kapoor

I can’t get enough of this ‘Diva’………………….there have been no instances till date that this fabulous ‘momma of two’ has ever dressed up shabbily. Not a hair is out of place whenever she is on the red carpet……………….in this outfit, I simply adore her look in a little black dress with hoopla earrings adding a dash of glitz to the look while keeping the clutch and shoes simple. The key to achieve her look is to let one piece get all the attention while other pieces act as a background. Simple yet ‘oh so classic’……………….I don’t mind declaring that she is one of the most well dressed women of our country.

Queenie Dhody

“The animal, the animal instinct in me…………….” that’s just a long lost song which I happen to remember looking at Queenie. Her favourite animal prints are doing a lot of appearances on the red carpet, unfortunately none of them work. The dress combined with golden jewellery, belt and the animal print shoes are overwhelming and absolutely not age appropriate…………….I would rather see a 20 year old young lady wear this outfit than Queenie……………as I said in my earlier posts, animal print in 40s works better if used in small amounts. This dress would have worked better if it was in a plain dark colour with alluring pair of heels.

Malaika Arora Khan & Arbaaz Khan

Malaika & Arbaaz came in as a pair wearing nautical stripes……………but the matchy-matchy is just getting to me. Arbaaz’s torn denims are definitely a red carpet no-no please paired with those formal mocassins……………..sheer disaster. Neither do Malaika’s leather pantlook and the heels paired with Louis Vuitton clutch don’t do much for her look. My say is this look is OK if you are going for dinner out with family or buddies………………but for a couture week bash………….please dress up a bit eventful.

Manish Malhotra, Urmila Matondkar and Sophie Choudhary

Did Urmila make a dress out of a silk scarf????? Looking at her dress I feel that she just did that……………..and those shoes………..kill me someone but they have spoilt the entire look. People firstly leave the animal print alone, secondly I would have liked it a bit if the shoes were strappy heels or open toe pumps. Why do ourbollywood women have that affinity with flowers on their feet. Manish Malhotra seems like he has had a very tiring day and just came to the party to get a break. While Sophie looks ready to pary in her short printed dress with Bottega Veneta clutch and black basic heels. Out of the three, Sophie definitely wins my vote for keeping in simple yet party right.

Gayatri Oberoi, Sonali Bendre and Goldie Bhel

Gayatri Oberoi poses here with Sonali Bendre and her hubby Goldie Bhel……………..Gayatri looks ultra glam in the Herve Leger bandage blue dress pairing it with Judith Leiber clutch and golden heels. While Sonali kept it simplein a little black dress and bronze heels while Goldie who also kept it simple,  is enjoying his moment with the lovely ladies. My favourite out of the three has to be Gayatri for looking ‘Oh la la’ in that dress of hers.

Raveena Tandon

Raveena Tandon was sighted after a loooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnggggggg time wearing black on black. Where is the glitter??? The all black attire is now getting to me……………Raveena could have worn a beautiful pendant or earrings or even jazzy belt with funky shoes. But a beautiful woman like Raveena, this look is not doing any wonders for her.

Bhavna and Chunky Pandey

Bhavna and Chunky walked in where Bhavna was wearing a pretty navy blue strapless dress with a stylish belt, while Chunky is more in a very casual avatar in denims and a white shirt. But somehow I am digging his yellow mocassins which adds the much desired pop of colour to the outfit. It is unusual choice but works well on Chucky’s look. On the whole, the couple looking good together.

Arjun & Mehr Rampal

Mr & Mrs. Rampal camein hand in hand where Mehr wore a Malini Ramani kaftan one shoulder outfit and Arjun was in his casual avatar. Thankfully Mehr added that much needed colour to her style but would have preferred this outfit in a shorter version. With that hot bod, why hide it under loose clothes when you can show them off with elegance. Arjun seems to have just got out of bed and onto the red carpet……………….Wake up Arjun…………….its time to party.

Fashion & Bollywood movies……………….

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on June 19, 2010

I am a movie buff & there is no confessing about it. If you are an Indian who does not see any Bollywood movie or dance to any of its melodious tunes…………….please don’t call yourself a ‘Saccha Hindustani’…………….Bollywood is in our blood. These days it is in our dressing too…………ever notice your next door neighbour auntyji dressed in a Madhuri Dixit’s ‘Hum Aapke hai kaun’ trademark blue saree or your best friend trying to be like the gorgeous Deepika Padukone in those shorts & spaghetti tops which she wore in ‘Housefull’ or a guy walking in a denim with T-shirt reminding you of Ranbir Kapoor’s recent flick or the sexy siren dancing in a party dressed to kill as Kareena Kapoor in ‘Kambakt Ishq’…………………we all have seen these people somewhere right!!!

Let me take you through the fashion down the decades in bollywood and how it has changed the face of what you, me or anyone as a matter of fact wears in our everyday life.

1950s

I think the obsession started with seeing the yester year actresses like Madhubala, Nutan, Meena Kumari, Nargis Dutt, Waheeda Rehman all dressed in sarees with blouses which were printed or plain had puffed short sleeves.  The Western wear of the 1950s was long middy dresses since it was considered inappropriate for a woman to be dressed in revealing clothes. How can I ever forget the beautiful vintage jewellery like jhumkas, hooplas, matha tikka, chokker, bangles….. ahhhh……. jewellery……………… beautiful jewellery. The keyword for this decade was ‘Simplicity’……….be it the designs of the clothes or the make-up it was all kept minimal.

Legendary Actors like Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Kishore Kumar wore traditional clothes like dhoti kurta, kurta pyjama and when it came to formal western wear they opted for suits with tie. Hair for men were short accesorized usually with hats and women usually wore their long hair in a bun, plaits or simply left them open. There was no space for a tom-boy in that era since women were considered to act more feminine and men had to be thorough gentlemen. Movies like Awaara, Naya Daur, Chalti ka naam gaadi, Daag have set the trends for the people of India. But the fashion of the 1950s is classic and evergreen just like the movies.

1960s

Enter the Era of Anarkali suits, chudidhar with fitted kurtis & Mumtaz Saree [as seen above] were what one who has lived that era can recall……unfortunately I was born 2 decades late but would have loved to live the 1960s era when fashion had made a grand entry into Bollywood. People were discovering new styles in both Indian & western couture, experimenting with their looks.

What I can remember after seeing the movie is the high hair updos, ‘Sadhna’ cut which was a name given to fringe haircut, elongated eye-liner, big earrings, tight fitted clothes and the famous ‘twist’ dance. Asha Parekh, Mumtaz, Meena Kumari, Sharmila Tagore, Helen, Saira Bano were the top actresses in this time era influencing the fashion. The clothes were bolder than the previous decade in this ‘eastman’ colour decade.

Of course how can I ever leave the men behind…………..Icons like Shammi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Dharamendra, Manoj Kumar, Sunil Dutt ruled the bollywood scene and they generally prefered wearing western attire. Even today when I see the movies from this era, I brings so much of joy………………..Mughal-E-Azam, Teesri Manzil, Junglee, Aradhana, Bramhachari, Sahib, Biwi aur Ghulam, Jigri Dost, Padosan, Pakeezah [though released in 1972 it was made in the 60s]……………always refreshing to see these movies.

1970s

The ‘Flower Power’ or the ‘Disco Age’ years must have been the era that left quiet an impression on minds of very bollywood fan. The bell bottoms, platform heels, colourful sunglasses, psychedelic prints, butterfly collar shirts, big  jewellery, Maxi dresses, tie-dye designs are still fresh in my memory.  ‘Big’ was beautiful in the 1970s……………now that can be your hair, the print on the fabric, buttons on the shirt or the hemlines of your pants…………….

The hemlines went up and the necklines plunged a bit…………bold, demure style followed in this era where actresses like Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Neetu Singh, Hema Malini, Jaya Badhuri Bachchan ruled the time. The ‘bangs’ or the ‘wings’ look was very ‘In’ during the 70s for women…………Men too loved wearing their hair long with prominent side-burns. The leading men in bollywood were seen wearing fitted Blazers which were a bit flared at the hip coupled with broad ties………..I remember my Dad still has a couple of those and still not ready to give them up saying it was huge trend during his college years. Three piece suit also gained prominence during this era where one could see the hero’s of Bollywood wearing this style on & off the silver screen.

Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharamdra, Shashi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Jeetendra, were the idols for the young generation. Movies like Sholay, Seeta aur Geeta, Deewar, Yaadon ki Baraat, Amar Akbar Anthony, Bobby, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Anand, Guddi, Chupke Chupke were the movies making waves in bollywood.

1980s

I am a sample piece from this era since I was born in 1980s……………I am not telling you the year though………..but the bell bottoms + platform heel trend was phasing out ……………enter the strappy sandals and denim. Loads of colour was also the focus of the 1980s but people prefered wearing single colour instead of going in for fusion.

Rekha, Sridevi, Jaya Prada, Shabana Azmi, Dimple Kapadia, Padmini Kolhapure, Amrita Singh, Poonam Dhillon, Neelam ruled the silver screen in the 1980s. The saree in plain colours was a rage when Mr. India released…………I could see all the friends of my mother buy sarees in plain colour and consider themselves Sridevi……………Bhagyashree made the white Salwar Kameez famous in ‘Kabootar Jaa Jaaa’ song from the movie ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. The hair style meant more volume and people were simply crazy behind Dimple Kapadia’s hair do in ‘Saagar’ that every beauty salon put up a poster of Dimple in order to boost their sales. Hope you all remember the ‘Sagar Choti’ ……………..that is where the name came from. This era also made pants much more of a fashion for common people with denims catching the focus.

Actors like Sunjay Dutt, Sunny Deol, Mithun Chakravarthy, Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Naseerudin Shah, Rishi Kapoor made the fitted pants or jean…a routine. Of course not forgetting Jeetendra who made the white pants with white shoes a must have for every guy………………………. The rugged look was ‘In’ for the guys of the 80s. Movies that left a mark not just at the box office but also in fashion were Umrao Jaan, Mr. India, Maine Pyar Kiya, Chaalbaaz, Silsila, Shaan, Sagar……………

1990s

I remember the frenzy that followed the weeks after ‘Hum Aapke hai kaun’ released in India, If I ever went to any wedding I could see a belle dressed as ‘Madhuri Dixit’……………….remember the famous purple saree [Pic above] from the song ‘Didi tera devar deewana’…………….

Colourful Bandhni, shoulder pads, scarves, chunky jewellery, ankle high boots, tight fitted skirts, hair bands, big decorative bindis and matt lipsticks were a rage in 1990s. And of course all the actress like Kajol, Urmila Matondkar, Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, Raveena Tandon, Juhi Chawla set the trend for it. Menswear had also changed to a lot of extent with waist coats, leather jackets, baggy pants, loud print ties, dungrees, colourful denim making an entry into their wardrobe. Even if a guy is not all muscles he would wear a T-shirt underneath his over-sized shirt to make him look like a hunk……………..yeah I know you have been there too, buddy. Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan have sported that look in many of their movies. Talking about movies, I feel films like Hum Aapke hain Kaun, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil toh Pagal hai, Yes Boss, Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam, Rangeela, Raja Hindustani made an impact on the fashion industry as well.

These movies also made way for designers to enter Bollywood in a big way………….famously known was Manish Malhotra for transforming Kajol in DDJL, Kuch Kuch hota hai or giving a make-over to Karisma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani…………Designers made it big and created a new path where the clothes were not required to be rented from the dresswala but to be picked up from a boutique. The 1990s era was a gateway for Fashion designers who were able to showcase their creations not just in movies but also on Ramp and international beauty pagents. Actors & Actresses became more image conscious with respect to what they wore…………..each one wanted the designer to create a unique style for them. In india this was a revolutionary period in terms of fashion for sure……

2000s

Enter the era of ‘Stylist’ since the designers were already here……………the bollywood actors & actresses started making more frequent appearance on the red carpet hence needed someone to style them both on and off the screen as well. The best example of course can be Dhoom 2 where stylist  and fashion editor of Vogue India Anaita Shroff Adajania had made all the people look ‘hot’ with her styling tricks. She was also a part of the cast of ‘Kal ho na ho’ which was another style forward movie. But people loved the ‘Dil Chahta hai’ gang that changed the way men looked at themselves in the mirror.

Suddenly ‘Metrosexual Men’ were very much in vogue………..they styled their hair well, wore designer labels only, went in for a regular manicure/pedicure & professional grooming, carried a pair of stylish shades…………..in short men became much, much more fashion conscious which was a woman’s business till the turn of the century. Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan,  Saif Ali Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal we owe this change to you guys……..

It was ‘More the Merrier’ for women too who had an array of style to choose from…………she could go vintage with the classy ‘Devdas’ look by wearing kundan jewellery with designer saree or look like a million bucks by adorning short dresses which Kareena Kapoor carried off  in ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ ………else look feminine in the Anarkali chudidhar which Sonam Kapoor wore in ‘Saawariya’…………..the choice is unlimited.

Kareena Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherjee, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, Bipasha Basu are the front runners from the beginning of the 21st century. New faces like Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut are being looked up as the ‘next best thing’ in Bollywood fashion. The movie list that set a fashion trends would go on forever since today fashion changes as quickly as the movies in the theatre……….hope the next decade is even more fun-filled.

Best Indian Celebrity Bride

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 6, 2010

Sania Mirza
The most recent Indian celebrity bride but in this case her marriage was a cross border one. is The world witnessed so much of drama during the much hyped wedding of Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik. I do admire that Sania Mirza kept a dignified silence and supported Shoaib during such trying times………………anyways I am no one to comment about any person’s personal life but will be definitely be commenting about their style. Despite all the chaos she looked every bit of a glowing bride. Even though I am not a fan of her look during her Nikaah where she wore her mother’s wedding saree and the sangeet chudidhar outfit. I do understand the sentimental value associated with wearing your mother’s vintage wedding saree but the styling was just too hotchpotch with the pallu of the dupatta simply hiding her pretty face. I would have draped her saree differently and pinned the dupatta in a much more stylish way so that it gives the illusion that it is a part of her saree. The pink chudidhar which she wore for her sangeet simply made her look all washed out since the colour was way too light. The hairstyle with loads of gajra was simply too old-fashioned. She would have definitely rocked had she styled her hair and kept them open. But she definitely did us all proud during her reception ceremony in Pakistan by wearing Shantanu-Nikhil Lehengas………….one is Grey with crystal work all over she wore in Lahore and the other one in beige with bright vermillion red embroidery work she wore in Sialkot. The bright colour and glitters made her look like a ‘Diva’. She accessorized it very well with a ‘Dior’ clutch, vintage jewellery, bridal shoes and a stylish hairdo. These two looks were my favourite for her and not to mention that the designer duo Shantanu-Nikhil did a lot of justice to her look. And yes people she did repeat her jewellery, shoes and clutch bags during her week-long wedding celebration which I feel is absolutely fine. If you get a priceless, classic piece of accessory or outfit stick to it for a lifetime…………..and wear it as many times as you desire.
Hope her fairytale wedding has a smooth sailing forever………………………..

Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Shetty always hits the bullseye with her dressing and is in one word a ‘Style Diva’. Even on her D-day she did not disappoint us with her bridal look. Here dressed in traditional Saree which had Swaroski crystals sewn in the ‘Ambi’ design all over was designed by Tarun Tahiliani. Tarun has always done justice with her look, no one better could have dressed her in the Bridal Trousseau like he did. We loved the look which was enhanced with the use of traditional Kundan, ruby and emerald Jewellery. The Bride was dressed in South Indian attire complete with veil of jasmine flowers ‘Gajra’ adorning her hair but wore the North Indian Chuda and kalire in order to keep up with the Punjabi tradition since she her husband hails from Punjabi background. She has the perfect body to carry on any outfit and all we can say to this bride that you simply look adorable. But I was disappointed when she wore the golden outfit which was a combination of a Saree and an Evening Gown for her Wedding reception.  She looked more like an Oscar trophy rather than a diva. Plus the westernised dress with the Indian Jewellery simply did not blend well.

Riddhima Kapoor Sahni

She was famously known as Rishi and Neetu Kapoor’s daughter before her own wedding happened where people took notice of her style and her Bridal outfits. What we liked about Riddhima is that she was different from other traditional Brides. Her Bridal trousseau had a variety of different looks. She wore a beautiful pista green colour with crystal work lehanga teamed with a Corset with plain dupatta fitted as a veil with Diamond and Emerald jewellery on her engagement. Unusual choice better worked really well with her skin tone and her body. For the wedding she wore a red coloured Lehenga with gotta work all over. Riddhima Kapoor Sahni makes our list of Celebrity bride for having originality and an elegance which ‘Kapoor Women’ have always had.

  Priya Chatwal

She got married to Vikram Chatwal who is the son of famous hotelier Sant Singh Chatwal. But she took all the attention away from the well-known groom when she came out dressed in outfits designed by Tarun Tahiliani. Baby pink colour was the most least expected colour a bride would wear in India, but Priya made the right choice with her pink organza Lehenga since her pheras as per Sikh customs took place in the morning. But for the Barat the night before she wore a dazzling Red colour Brocade Lehenga with heavy embroidery work. Loved the Jewellery that she wore which included timeless pieces like Rani Haar, Kundan with precious gems, traditional punjabi Matha tikka and of course Chuda with golden Kalire. Part of wedding took place in the exotic Rajasthan and the other half in the capital city New Delhi which was surely the wedding of the year 2006.

 Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

The lady needs no introduction  when it comes to Indian Couture. Dressed like a bride as per ‘Bunt’ tradition, Aishwarya looked ravishing in a golden colour Saree designed by Neeta Lulla on her wedding day. The bride was decked in gold, kundan, precious gems and diamond jewellery from head to toe[literally]. Check out her elegant south Indian Matha tikka and baju bandh. We love Indian traditional jewellery since it brings out the best in every Indian girl on her D-day. I loved all the Kanjeevaram Sarees which she wore post her wedding also. I must say that after becoming a ‘Bachchan Bahu’ she has never looked more Elegant. Of course their wedding was a media frenzy but the couple glowed and looked every bit in love.

Karishma Kapoor
To describe Karisma’s style in plain words is difficult but I truly feel that she has been the most ‘Classic’ Celebrity till date. For her wedding she selected the colour Pink for her Bridal Attire which was a perfect choice for a daytime  ceremony. The Lehenga was grand and in accordance to the image of ‘Kapoor’ family. She looked like a ravishing punjabi bride wearing the traditional punjabi chuda and golden kalire. The credit for her look must be given to her Designer Manish Malhotra who got the best out of her by transforming this simple lady to a glamourous Diva of our time.  She has been original throughout with her choice of clothes and hence she is one of my best choice for the Best Celebrity Bride.

How to dress in your 30s!!!

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on April 28, 2010

I have come across many people who dread the age 30 and crossing over for them is a big deal but honestly it is totally in your mind coz 30s is the next 20s. Looking at beautiful women in their 30s and still rocking the fashion scene, I feel age is just a number now and it is ok to let people know that you might be 30 years old but have become wiser, much more calmer with time. A woman in this age group is more confident about her body and comfortable in her own skin. Her skin glows coz her pimple face years are behind her and her wrinkles are yet to arrive………….in short she is in the best shape but that does not mean she does not have other concerns in her life.

A woman in her 30s is at her busiest stage in life whether it is about children, work, family, social life…………..she is always in a hurry. But nonetheless she has never looked more stunning since she is at a stage where she can blend the elegance with beauty. Gone is the age-old myth that a woman in her 30s needs to cover up……………if you have a good healthy body, go ahead flaunt it………..

Please remember to dress your age and not younger, coz you will end up looking like a big mess believe me since we all see such disasters on the red carpet quite often. Embrace the 30s and you would have never looked better in your entire lifetime. Indian silhouettes like Sarees and Salwar Kameez are evergreen whatever be your age but go in for well-fitted tailored pants, formal tops paired with denim, knee-length skirts, evening gown, long flowy dresses work for this age group. Say goodbye to mini-skirts even if you have the body to carry it off…………it simply is not age appropriate……..besides one can look even more sexy without showing off too much of skin. Go in for floral dresses for the summers teamed with a pair of shades, bag and flat shoes or sandals like gladiators strappy ones [avoid flip-flops unless you are at the beach] for day-wear, a smart formal top combined with a belt on top of a formal trouser/skirt and stilettos/kitten heels for office wear.

For a more casual look try going in for a t-shirt [no skin fits please] or a shirt with jeans as per your body type since skinny jeans might not suit all body type. Halter neck look great be it day-wear or evening time………….I even love to see women in their 30s wearing square and v-necks to focus on their collar bones and neck.  Evening gown or knee-length dresses work for this age group which makes one look alluring in a very classy way when worn with a small clutch and a pair of open toe heels. Open toe heels are my favourite be it with Indian or Western attire they look good any outfit.

Oversized bags should be avoided at any cost unless you are travelling go for medium-sized leather bag in a sober colours like black, brown and beige which you can match with maximum outfits in your wardrobe.  Also don’t forget to co-ordinate your bag with shoes and belts. Saree can be worn with halter necks for a glamorous look, Kurti chudidhars are a must-haves, Empire waist dresses are to die for………………Fabrics like chiffon and crepes work for this age groups……….One shoulder dress/top make a woman look ‘oh-so-fabulous’. Also one can try lace tops, wrap dresses and ankle length boots [avoid if you live in a tropical city]

Avoid too chunky or girlish jewellery [please no cartoon motif here] instea. d opt for silver and gold combined with diamonds or precious gems. Go for long chains, chandelier earrings, classic stackable diamond rings and bangles with western outfits whereas do wear heavy kundan jewellery like earrings, necklace and bangles with your Saree/Salwar Kameez since I feel this age can easily carry off heavy Indian jewellery………………..as a rule concentrate either on the outfit or the accessorises do not have both in excess. If your Indian attire has heavy all-over embroidery then go light on jewels and vice versa.

The photos displayed below are of the celebrities in their 30s who still rock the page 3 with their fashion sense and have never looked better.
