GQ ‘Men of the Year’ Awards

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 1, 2011

GQ magazine gave away ‘Men of the Year’ awards in Mumbai………………..and we  had to write about who wore what and how did they fair on the red carpet. So here we go……..

Shahrukh Khan has been voted the best dressed man in India but I sometimes wish he would experiment with a bit of color rather than always playing safe in black. Though he does look good in his statement black tuxedo complete with push back hair.

Mrs. Khan of the other hand is definitely a graceful dresser……..Gauri was seen at this event wearing an ‘Emilio Pucci’ lace dress, Judith Leiber clutch and Jimmy Choo shoes. I like the fact that she did not go all matchy-matchy with her accessories instead opted for a silver clutch & nude open toe heels. Simple, elegant and absolutely appropriate for the event.

Farhan Akhtar seems to have forgotten the essential of these Tux……………the bow-tie of course. A handsome face like him definitely would have looked better styled if he had taken a little more pain in completing the evening look……………rather than just walking in without the tie.

Anushka Sharma was seeing wearing this green ‘Dior’ gown with loose curls on one side…………I am not much into this color but I cannot deny the fact that Anushka looked absolutely amazing. On anyone else the outfit would not looked so good, but Anushka sure makes it work.

Freida Pinto posed for the shutterbugs in this ‘Versace’ gown………….unfortunately the sequin-feathered tail gown could not make Ms. Pinto stand out in the crowd. In a single colour, the gown had too much detail work which did no justice to Freida’s petite frame. I wish she would have chosen one of her knee-length dresses which she is able to work so flawlessly.

It was a surprise to see Prateik in a suit looking dapper plus with a pretty arm candy!!…………now that’s ice-cream with cherry on the top. The lady in question is British model Amy Jackson who will be seen in India films soon. As for Prateik, please dress this way for red carpet events, casuals are best left for time-out with buddies.

Deepika Padukone looked glamorous in this gown [my guess is Ramona Narang] but the shoes were just so wrong on this outfit. I wish she would have opted for strappy heels instead of pumps. The hair, the make-up and the lady all do look fabulous, but one wrong thing can make the entire outfit look bad.

We might have to wait to see Siddharth Mallya carve a niche in the business world, but this man definitely rocks on the red carpet. I do like his sense of style and the effort he puts in to look good at every event. Even here he looked neat in these tuxedos……….some established bollywood stars should make a note on ‘how to dress’ for glam events.

Imran Khan never makes a mistake when he has to dress up a formal event. I suppose his style at GQ event speak a lot about his sense of style. Love to see him in well tailored suits and tux…………perfect 10 on 10 every time. As for his wife Avantika, she did look pretty in her red wrap dress and bronze peep-toes.  Except for the hair, I do dig her outfit………….nice.

‘Vision in White’ is how Simi Garewal likes to keep her style………..no doubt she looks incredible and absolutely defied aging but I do wish she would add more color to her styling in form of accessories. All white can be boring at times………..:-)

56th Filmfare Awards – Red Carpet Review

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on January 30, 2011

The big, big, big nite had many beautiful celebrities take stage at 56th Filmfare Awards. How could I stay behind in getting the red carpet review for the event. Though I somehow don’t agree to who won the award since I would have certainly picked other deserving actors. But red carpet review is my honest expression, no bribing here. The event was held at the Yash Raj Studios on 29th January, 2011 in Mumbai. So keeping it short and simple………….let’s see what our celebrities wore at the award function…………….and how well they fared on the red carpet.

Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif was seen here wearing a Manish Malhotra outfit but frankly I am confused over whether it is a gown or a lehenga with an ultra long kurti???? What this outfit needed was a shorter kurti or better, a choli with a dupatta. Secondly this outfit was way too heavy to be worn at an award function, would have worked better for someone’s marriage. My Verdict : Pretty detailing, lovely colour………..but it was a case of overdressing for the occasion. Remember less is more at such events.

Malaika Arora Khan

Malaika Arora Khan a.k.a. ‘Munni’ wore a white and golden gown with gold accessories and nude open toe shoes. A ‘Diva’ like her can gracefully carry off any western attire and she did justice to this ensemble as well. The fault however was the design since somehow the golden one shoulder detail work seemed out of the picture. The gown would have worked better if it was a strapless gown with the detail work only on the bustier. My Verdict : Love Malaika in this gown, else the outfit would have not looked this good on anyone else.

Sonakshi Sinha

It felt like a breath of fresh air the moment I saw Sonakshi wearing this pretty ‘Gauri & Nainika’ outfit which is just right, given her young age. The green colour with minimal jewellery and ‘bling’ in form of the clutch. She also won the ‘Best Debut – Female’ of her role in ‘Dabangg’ which was truly well-deserved. My verdict : Love it………..

Vidya Balan

How can a woman always end up looking so flawless on the red carpet in a saree???? That is what I always ask myself whenever I see Vidya Balan in a ‘Sabyasachi’ creation. The attention grabbing statement bib necklace, the designer blouse, the black saree with detail work on the border………………Divine. Plus have never seen Ms.Balan in red-painted nails……..who so ever inspired her to get all dressed did a pretty good job. I am sure many jaws dropped once she made an entry at the award event.  My verdict : This is the tipping point for Vidya Balan & designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, please don’t ever go back to your earlier looks.

Urmila Matondkar

Urmila who has remained faithful to designer Manish Malhotra, wore his creation again. What a relief to see this beautiful women looking gorgeous on the red carpet. Yes I am still confused with the length of the kurti but Urmila is able to carry it off well plus the ‘bling’ is restricted above the waist and on the hemlines. Since her earlier red carpet sightings were a bit of a let down, this is better off than her earlier appearances. My verdict : Like it, suits her ‘petite frame’ well.

Hrithik & Suzzane Roshan

‘Lady in Red’ accompanied by her knight in shining armour…………………literally. Seeing Hrithik in those shiny pants and the grey suit I thought he had borrowed it from his father’s wardrobe where Papa Roshan might have still stored his 1970s clothes.  Suzzane on the other hand fares a wee bit better except for the pink clutch which looks out of the place. Again I would love to see her wear jewellery like a pair of earring on her gown. My verdict : Hrithik can look amazing in Karan Johar – Varun Bahl creation or a ‘Tom Ford’ suit.

Kajol

Kajol who made an appearance after a long time, also took home the award for the ‘Best Actress’…………………stylewise she seemed to have grabbed a Manish Malhotra outfit in a hurry. She is yet to lose her baby weight but why hide it under an oversized ill-fitting anarkali. I am sure that Kajol would have looked way better in a simple salwar kameez or even a saree. As for the baby weight, all I can say she still looks adorable. My Verdict : Honey you are beautiful in whatever you dress up but drop the baggy oversized clothes. They make you look bigger than you actually are.

Imran & Avantika Khan

The newly weds Imran Khan and Avantika made an entry very much in love…………….Imran was dressed in a tuxedo while Avantika went in for a bubble gum pink knee-length outfit with a black belt and nude pumps. Though not a fan of the shoes, I am happy that Avantika took a risk wearing this shocking pink colour for the red carpet plus the hair done up in a ‘do’ works for me. I would have just changed the belt to something with more metallic studs and shoes to match it. Imran looks dashing as ever……………..how many of our stars actually dress up like him for the red carpet. They are young and can easily experiment with their looks. My verdict : As a couple they look lovely, but I prefer Imran’s sleek look in the Tux over Avantika’s ensemble.

Preity Zinta

Is that Preity???? Whoa I never thought of seeing her dressing in Indian attire on the red carpet……………….no doubt she is looking refreshingly different and pretty but why is the beautiful work on the inner skirt which looks more like a lehenga hidden underneath the drapes??????? Is this another new styles of Manish Malhotra???? If your outfit has detail work please don’t hide the amazing work done by our hardworking Indian craftsmen. Preity looks beautiful but I am not digging her net saree. My verdict : Could have looked way better if the saree drape was different.

Rani Mukherjee and Shahrukh Khan with wife Gauri

Shahrukh Khan and Gauri made an entry with Rani Mukherjee and a friend, where the ladies donned midnight blue gowns  looking flawless. Like Gauri’s one shoulder Donna Karan gown but the oversized clutch is what I am not a fan of. Rani went for the shimmer halter neck dark blue outfit which for her petite frame works wonders. Shahrukh Khan is dressed as usual in a black suit and bed hair but this time the ladies got me drooling over their outfits. My verdict : Shahrukh is smart to have beautiful arm candy to complete his look……………;-)

Prachi Desai

Prachi Desai who was one of the nominees came in this blushing pink gown which was indeed very dreamy but her hairdo somehow woke me up from that dream. The braided hairdo would have looked amazing on an Indian attire than on a gown……………….anybody recall Vidya Balan wearing a saree with braided hair. How classy was that???  Call me traditional but this is somehow not working for me. I would have styled her with side swept hair kept open. My verdict : Love the dress, hate the hair.

Amitabh Bachchan with Bahu Aishwarya

Papa Big B made an appearance along with Aishwarya…………..I do recall that he had boycotted this award function last year……….let bygones be bygones for now. Aishwarya who was nominated in ‘Best Actor – Female’category was looking ravishing in this Manish Malhotra off-white creation. I truly wished she would have at least won the ‘Critics Award’  not that Vidya was not deserving, she is a brilliant actress………………but Aishwarya did stand out in ‘Guzaarish’. Maybe this is just my opinion but stylewise Aishwarya looks elegant. Big B on the other hand wore a two-toned blazer which he was able to carry off for this glitzy event. He received an award for completing 40 glorious years in Bollywood. My verdict : Father & daughter-in-law look graceful. Aishwarya is definitely my pick for the ‘Best Dressed’ at the Filmfare.

Prateik Babbar

Is this the same young guy we had seen last year at the Filmfare wearing sneakers with a suit???? Hell, yes it is Prateik Babbar looking suave and happening…………….Dhobi Ghat seems to have done wonders to his style sense. Thank God we are able to see his good looks in this clean get-up of his. I am sure he would have found many girls eager to party with him the night away. The black single button blazer suit with clean-shaven look gets a thumbs up from me My verdict : He looks very sophisticated…………Ohh La La…….

Raveena Tandon

Last time when I saw Raveena on the red carpet, I jumped out of my seat quite literally. But this time I am not disappointed with her choice. The black anarkali is also MM creation [Hope you know MM stands for Manish Malhotra who has dressed half of the ladies for this event] is definitely a good break from her earlier red carpet appearances. Though the dress itself does not stand out much, Raveena still looks good in it. My verdict : Strictly Like it, though I feel Raveena can do much better. I would dress her in more contemporary, sophisticated fashion.

Sridevi & Boney Kapoor

Sridevi is looking ‘HOT’ as the days are passing by……………..seriously I wonder why she never wore such beautiful gowns on the red carpet earlier. The only thing which should have been skipped is the shimmery stole. The satin gown itself is gorgeous enough, why let it get distracted by anything else??? As for Boney Kapoor, I cannot see him when his beautiful wife takes all the attention on the red carpet. My Verdict : Sexy outfit, skip the stole.

HDIL Couture Week 2010 Bash

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on October 6, 2010

Another couture week is here but in my opinion I feel we should limit ourselves to a maximum of 2 couture week per year that showcase all designers………………why do we need so many couture week where one gets to see the same designs, the same designers and of course the same celebrities again………………have we become addicted to couture weeks???? Do we love fashion so much that the sense is going out the window???? I often ask myself these questions but for the sake of fashion, I am ready to let go of this Q & A session in my mind………..

The HDIL couture Week 2010 started with a bash held at Grand Hyatt.

Shahrukh & Gauri Khan along with Rani Mukherjee

Shahrukh Khan with lady love Gauri an friend Rani Mukherjee posed for the cameras………..Shahrukh dressed in a brown shirt and black trousers looked quite ready to party the night, Gauri in a beautiful red Valentino and Rani in a short aquamarine dress designed by a Greek designer…………….all three looked good on the red carpet especially Rani since the outfit fits the bill for her petite frame. As for Mrs. Khan, I would have opted for a shimmer black or grey clutch plus shoes……………..Shahrukh was at an ease when it came to dressing up, but hey it is just a bash………….

Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone who is our Style Star for the month, wore a satin beige one shoulder top with black fitted skirt and satin heels with rosette on them……………..on the whole I am not digging the look because of the shoes and the lack of glamour in her look. It gives vibe that one is trying to minimize the sexiness quotient in this outfit by adopting a ‘girl next door’ make-up & hair. I would have prefered if the top would have extended hemlines till knees and acted as a short cocktail dress…………Plus those shoes just don’t gel that well……………..though love the one shoulder top along with the crystal clutch……………..but a beautiful soul like Deepika needs to look glamorous by adding the accessories.

Raj Kundar & Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Shetty also made an appearance with hubby Raj Kundra in tow but I have to say………….why does Raj always have that messy look on his face??? With such a fabulous looking ‘biwi’ as arm candy, he should dress to the core complete with good personal grooming. I feel that he should either go in for a beard or no beard…………….the style ‘in between’ does not suit him at all. Whereas I have no complaints about Shilpa………………she looks perfect in her Little black dress with gold trimmings and loooooooooooooovvvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeee those shoes. Must say that combining black and golden in western wear is not easy and Shilpa knows how to do justice to it……………Mr. Kundra would expect you to clean up next time.

Karisma Kapoor

I can’t get enough of this ‘Diva’………………….there have been no instances till date that this fabulous ‘momma of two’ has ever dressed up shabbily. Not a hair is out of place whenever she is on the red carpet……………….in this outfit, I simply adore her look in a little black dress with hoopla earrings adding a dash of glitz to the look while keeping the clutch and shoes simple. The key to achieve her look is to let one piece get all the attention while other pieces act as a background. Simple yet ‘oh so classic’……………….I don’t mind declaring that she is one of the most well dressed women of our country.

Queenie Dhody

“The animal, the animal instinct in me…………….” that’s just a long lost song which I happen to remember looking at Queenie. Her favourite animal prints are doing a lot of appearances on the red carpet, unfortunately none of them work. The dress combined with golden jewellery, belt and the animal print shoes are overwhelming and absolutely not age appropriate…………….I would rather see a 20 year old young lady wear this outfit than Queenie……………as I said in my earlier posts, animal print in 40s works better if used in small amounts. This dress would have worked better if it was in a plain dark colour with alluring pair of heels.

Malaika Arora Khan & Arbaaz Khan

Malaika & Arbaaz came in as a pair wearing nautical stripes……………but the matchy-matchy is just getting to me. Arbaaz’s torn denims are definitely a red carpet no-no please paired with those formal mocassins……………..sheer disaster. Neither do Malaika’s leather pantlook and the heels paired with Louis Vuitton clutch don’t do much for her look. My say is this look is OK if you are going for dinner out with family or buddies………………but for a couture week bash………….please dress up a bit eventful.

Manish Malhotra, Urmila Matondkar and Sophie Choudhary

Did Urmila make a dress out of a silk scarf????? Looking at her dress I feel that she just did that……………..and those shoes………..kill me someone but they have spoilt the entire look. People firstly leave the animal print alone, secondly I would have liked it a bit if the shoes were strappy heels or open toe pumps. Why do ourbollywood women have that affinity with flowers on their feet. Manish Malhotra seems like he has had a very tiring day and just came to the party to get a break. While Sophie looks ready to pary in her short printed dress with Bottega Veneta clutch and black basic heels. Out of the three, Sophie definitely wins my vote for keeping in simple yet party right.

Gayatri Oberoi, Sonali Bendre and Goldie Bhel

Gayatri Oberoi poses here with Sonali Bendre and her hubby Goldie Bhel……………..Gayatri looks ultra glam in the Herve Leger bandage blue dress pairing it with Judith Leiber clutch and golden heels. While Sonali kept it simplein a little black dress and bronze heels while Goldie who also kept it simple,  is enjoying his moment with the lovely ladies. My favourite out of the three has to be Gayatri for looking ‘Oh la la’ in that dress of hers.

Raveena Tandon

Raveena Tandon was sighted after a loooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnggggggg time wearing black on black. Where is the glitter??? The all black attire is now getting to me……………Raveena could have worn a beautiful pendant or earrings or even jazzy belt with funky shoes. But a beautiful woman like Raveena, this look is not doing any wonders for her.

Bhavna and Chunky Pandey

Bhavna and Chunky walked in where Bhavna was wearing a pretty navy blue strapless dress with a stylish belt, while Chunky is more in a very casual avatar in denims and a white shirt. But somehow I am digging his yellow mocassins which adds the much desired pop of colour to the outfit. It is unusual choice but works well on Chucky’s look. On the whole, the couple looking good together.

Arjun & Mehr Rampal

Mr & Mrs. Rampal camein hand in hand where Mehr wore a Malini Ramani kaftan one shoulder outfit and Arjun was in his casual avatar. Thankfully Mehr added that much needed colour to her style but would have preferred this outfit in a shorter version. With that hot bod, why hide it under loose clothes when you can show them off with elegance. Arjun seems to have just got out of bed and onto the red carpet……………….Wake up Arjun…………….its time to party.

How to Dress in your 40s!!

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on April 30, 2010

‘Life begins after 40’ holds so true for many women………maybe since in your forties a women finally gets a lot of time to think about herself since the past 2 decades she has been thinking about family, work and career. The 40s age era is about getting to know yourself better. Her focus is now primarily on finding an identity for herself apart from her family. Unfortunately I have seen women dressing up in their 40s as if they are still in their 20s. The fact of the matter is that the more you try to dress younger the more older you end up looking. There is no harm in aging gracefully……..

I like the fact that Indian have started adopting western wear in their wardrobe combining it beautifully with Indian pieces. Best example can be an Indian Kurti with a trouser or a knee length with Indian Jewellery………..this trend has actually caught the eye of the global fashion arena. A woman in her 40s has a strong personality which should also reflect in her dressing. My style for a woman in her 40s would be defined shoulder patterns, boat necks, trousers [loads of them in different colour], a little bit of layering to soften the look, fitted tailored jackets, Kurtis in beautiful Indian summer colours, well fitted Salwar Kameez, an elegant Saree with embroidery emphasis on the border or the pallu……….

I also love to see the women of this age group dressed in gypsy skirts which are long flowy silhoutte coupled with fitted top preferably in sleeveless and long earrings…………….this gypsy look is ‘oh-so-desirable’  when you remember the ‘hippie era’. If you wanna go classic opt for a satin tunic top with denim or trousers and simple accesories. Another favourite of mine would be long sleeve blouse on top of a skirt or trousers. The chinese collars with detailing work if you have a long slender neck else stick to round or v-necklines. Under any case avoid too tight outfits if you don’t wish to be on the ‘trashy dress list’.

If you are more inclined towards Indian outfits go subtle when it comes to choosing embroidery on the fabric or matching your jewellery with your outfits. Wear a saree or a chudidhar but with delicate accessories, please leave the heavy jewellery out for big occassions…………..it is necessary to have some glitter but not all over. There are women who want to go under the knife once they see the first signs of aging…………relax even with wrinkles a woman does look beautiful and wise. Attempt to wear neutral shade or lighter shades which reflect gorgeously on your skin giving it an instant glow. Include colourful silk scarves over formal wear or style it the way you want to. One can include beautiful mules in their shoe collection apart from stilettoes or flats.

As for bags I have seen many celebrities carry the ‘Birkin’ bag which I honestly feel is highly over-rated both in terms of fashion and price. If you wanna look your best it is not necessary that you will be able to achieve that look only by buying the most expensive designer brand. Get creative and stop following the entire herd over specific brands………..in fact find what looks good on you. Funnily the most well dressed women have always opted for lesser known brands and made them famous by wearing them on the red carpet. Originality might have it’s risk but if it works, the entire world will sit up to give undivided attention.

Some famous Indian celebrities whom I admire for their style and looking good after so many years. Believe me it is a lot of hard work to look this good in your 40s……………..but it is possible.
