Red Carpet Review – Pantaloons Femina Miss India 2011

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on April 15, 2011

PFMI 2011 was held on 14th April, 2011 in Mumbai where Kanishtha Dhankhar [centre]  has been crowned Pantaloons Femina Miss India World 2011, Hasleen Kaur [left] was crowned Miss India Earth 2011  and  Ankita Shorey [right] won Miss India International 2011.

At the grand finale, the jury consisted of Kangna ranaut, Dino Morea, Fardeen Khan,  Ritu Kumar, Shiamak Davar, Leander Paes, Tarun Mansukhani, Sajid Nadiadwala and Prachi Desai.

Here is our say on what the celebrities wore for the event and how did they fare???

Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut who was one of the judges looked like a dream in the navy blue off shoulder gown with the necklace………..the styling though looked very 1990s, but Kangana carried it off effortlessly. The only hitch would be the shoes which were not that impressive. With such a designer gown, one should have worn a stilettos with any detail since the length of the gown is till the ankles. But nonetheless the hair, the clutch, the jewels and the dress make it up for the look.

Dino Morea

Dino Morea came dressed in a basic black blazer paired with from what I can see are denims…………….though I have already declared this style as ‘out of vogue’ but dino still manages to charm me with that shirt and the well set hair. Hmmm…………..i wish he would have worn a pair of black trousers. On the whole, strictly like it………..

Ritu Kumar

Designer Ritu Kumar came dressed in one of her recent collection, the knee-length sleeveless Anarkali with silver detailing absolutely works for her. The silhouette is very age appropriate plus the silver buttons draws the attention hence the accessories were better subtle.

Fardeen Khan

Fardeen Khan came dressed in a black suit sans tie look, he looked like a thorough gentleman………………I must say he does make an effort to dress up well for the red carpet events. No complaints here, the dude looks super classy.

Shiamak Davar

Dance Guru Shiamak Davar gave me a surprise wearing a white blazer with an upturned collar…………..since I have mostly seen him wearing a shimmer jacket or shirts. If it was anyone else, I would have laughed and called the person ‘Butler Cadbury’………………..but Shiamak with his killer smile makes the outfit work well.

 Leander Paes

Leander Peas who was also on the panel of judges, walked on to the stage in an all black attire………………….I need to see some colour and the only one I see is on the outfit of the girl escorting him on the stage…….Such a handsome man with such a disastorous red carpet look. Leander do take some style tips from Mrs. Peas…………I am sure that will help.

Prachi Desai

Prachi Desai does look cute in a black halter neck gown with a lace clutch and dazzling earrings……………a more colourful gown would have been better since she is still young and can very well experiment with her looks on the red carpet. Even this simple look works for me………..

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week A/W 2011- Day 5

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on April 14, 2011

Every good thing must come to an end………….& philosphical talks really don’t suit me. The last day of fashion week had many designers to look forward to but few favourites of mine are being featured. Take a look at what you have in store for the Fall season.

Anita Dongre

I got to see pastels in her Spring/Summer 2011 collection, but the Fall/Winter 2011 collection was a different story altogether. Loads of dark hues with hint of shimmer and shine to them for that glamed up look……outfits were every bit fabulous. Though I did not expect the indo-western fusion, I am pleasantly surprised the way it has turned out. Anita presented the lehenga styled skirts in a variety of colours with detail work combined with jackets & tops. I loved the brocade jackets combined with short dresses………..that pop of colour against the winter background………..makes my imagination run wild. Te fabrics used for these creations were more of velvet, silk & brocade. My verdict : Very wearable and fashionable………..flared skirts are back in a big way for the upoming winter season.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee

Though many people were not in awe of Sabyasachi’s recent Spring/Summer 2011 collection, I still like it for the fresh designs and the mix & ma of fabrics. I also like the fac that Sabyasachi takes alot of risk in creating new collection…………..many designers unfortunately don’t which is why we cannot find any new designs on the runway most of the times. This time around his collection reflected a bit like his spring collection but the shades were darker and the colour black was incorporated in maximum of his designs. The fabric, the detail work were undoubtly beautiful, but waht lacked was the ‘fit’ of the silhouette. The collection had casual shirts, tops, skirts, pants, kurti, half saree, jackets………..but the bohemian look might not work for many. My verdict :  The collection would have been a head turner if the outfits had a better fit.

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week A/W 2011- Day 4

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on April 12, 2011

I am absolutely surprised by the new collection of Abraham & Thakore………..they have amazingly played around with saree drapes and created such a fashion forward collection. For this fashion week, they are certainly my favourites.

Abraham & Thakore

Culottes are back in vogue, courtesy of Abraham & Thakore. I honestly do admit that I was not that impressed by the duo’s collection…………….but this time around they have done justice when it comes to presenting a fashion forward collection. It is not easy to do work with saree drapes……………many new looks even fall flat. But this collection is smart, stylish and totally wearable. Sarees made into skirts, worn with a sleeveless top or jackets, draped with a belt, worn like a stole……………loved everbit of it. My verdict : Abraham & Thakore, well done for such a creatively unique work which stands out of the crowd.

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week A/W 2011- Day 3

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on April 12, 2011

Sorry for posting the highlights of WLIFW Fall/Winter 2011 a wee bit late but I promise to make it up to all my readers. The day 3 had me eagerly waiting for Manish Malhotra’s creation but unfortunately I ended up waiting at Airport with a ery slow speed internet connection. Nonethless here’s how the Manish Malhotra’s recent collection turned out to be………….

Manish Malhotra

I think I have already seen these outfits………………where??? At Lakme Fashion Week eld earlier in the month of march. Unfortunately there was nothing new……………..I was looking forward to some darker shades with some new details fit for the winter season. The floral details however beautiful still have a very summer feel too them. The same Anarkalis and floor length outfits are very last season…………I am kinda of bored since I get to see every celebrity wearing it.I only wish I would have got to see something absolutely new…………maybe in next fashion week. Fingers crossed.

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week A/W 2011- Day 2

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on April 8, 2011

The Day 2 began must have been awaited by many fans of Ritu Kumar….myself included………. to see her recent collection. Here is how the collection turned out to be……

Ritu Kumar

Ritu Kumar presented an Indo-Western range for Fall/Winter which was contemporary indeed and way better than her previous collection. There was loads of colour………….colour is exactly what we love. The signature block prints were also seen that was widely used not just in outfits but also bags. I honestly am not that fond of the ruffle shirts since they fall a bit flat………..not very impressive. But I am in love with the printed short dresses, the colourful jodhpuri pants, the kurtis and the jackets……………..all these in bright colour are to die for. My verdict : Ritu Kumar has a ‘Winner’ collection on her hands………….thank you for bringing back the bright colours.

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week A/W 2011- Day 1

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on April 7, 2011

And another one bites the dust, the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2011 started in Delhi yesterday in full swing. I am so looking forward to see the creations of the best designers from our country. But this time around I will only be displaying the creation of designers whose collection is worth a look and wearable. Here’s your sneak peek at what you have in store……….

Tarun Tahiliani

The Czar is back with his new collection but only this time it was a unique blend of South-east Asia with India. The styling with the hats was very Vietnamese since such type of hat is usually used by the farmers in Vietnam & China……………the hair tied in a pony with the long earrings was very Chinese inspired. Overall the styling part was superb, the collection had distinctively 2 sections i.e. one with bright colours like reds, orange, maroons, golden and cream while the other had midnight blues and black. I love, love, love the jackets showcased in this collection paired with saree and anarkalis. The sari designs however reminded me a bit of his last year’s Fall collection. The detail work on velvet was commendable…………something not seen in the fashion weeks till now.  Though I do confess that I am not a fan of the sheer fabric creation in black with detail works as seen in this collection. My verdict :  Beautiful wearable outfits which would stand out of the crowd………….the jackets, the vibrant colours are a must have this winter season……………….but expect to see much more from Mr. Tahiliani.

Rehane

Colours, colours…………….ohhh glorious colours, but wait I am confused if this collection of Rehane is a summer wear or for winter???? The bright pinks, orange, purple, blues and greens are fit for the upcoming summer season. Rehane’s signature dresses definitely worth a look with crochet detail work……..very wearable, cute and pretty. Though I did find this range more suitable for women of a younger age group. I wish, Rehane would have made a collection for women of all ages…………..Loved the 1950s styling which was playfully feminine. My verdict : Love the colours, love the designs which were a beautiful blend of east & west…………would love to see a more elaborate collection from Rehane for women of all ages in the future.

Aruna Seth – The Shoe Fairy

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on April 4, 2011

For all the Cinderellas around the world, Aruna Seth is definitely God sent……………..especially on their Wedding Day. This young entrepreneur has been creating waves in the Bridal industry for her elegant designs. She has dressed celebrities like Goldie Hawn, Sophia Bush, Paris Hilton, Emily Blunt to name a few on the red carpet in her famous creations. Every celebrity in London owns at least one pair of ‘Aruna Seth’.

Her creations have featured in magazines like Vogue UK, Wedding, Brides, OK!, UK Tatler, Hello!, Good Housekeeping, Grazia…….her shoes get featured every single month in a number of bridal magazines in UK. But the question still lingers in my mind…………… Who is the face behind this big brand ‘Aruna Seth’???

Designer Aruna displaying her creation

Aruna Seth has had a major influence of her family since the beginning……………. her father – the creator of ‘Ascot’ brand of shoes, is an established name in the shoe business. Her father hails from India while her mother is from Jamaica & the family settled in UK, Aruna got to see the best of both the worlds. She learnt the craft of shoe making from her father by helping him overlook the day-to-day work at their shoe workshop. She later learnt footwear designing from London College of Fashion and started her own brand in 2006.

Each of the beautiful shoe is handcrafted in Italy to ensure best quality and designs only 100 pairs of each design for exclusivity purpose. Aruna emphasizes not just on outer beauty of the shoes, but also inner comfort with special pads on the inside. Unlike other designer shoes, you can wear her shoes and walk around for hours without any pain. Aruna Seth’s shoes are definitely for keeps for years, they will still rock even if they are many years old. My say is if you want Ultra luxury in Footwear, Aruna Seth is your answer………

Though many people in India are still unaware of her label, I am sure she won’t be a stranger once her creations are showcased here. My style wish for Aruna Seth would be to see every Indian celebrity wearing her amazing shoes on the red carpet……………till now the shoe choices of our desi celebrities on the red carpet has not been that commendable. Hope Aruna can help change that……..:-)

One of the famous designs of Aruna Seth have to be the Farfalla Butterfly heel collection which have the crystal butterfly motif on a peep toe shoes………….the choice of heels or flat is yours. Also another creationof hers which I regularly see on the red carpet are the beautiful crystal bow heels & wedges, one of the creation is displayed below in Scarlett red……………..Love at first sight………There are shoes designed in Lace, Boots in suede, strappy sandals & handbags in leather and clutch bags with crystal detailing in her collection. The entire range is available in a bouquet of alluring colours which will surely take your breath away.

I am fortunate enough that for my very first section ‘Interview with the Designer’ I was able to get a quick Q & A session with the Creator herself. She & her PR manager were kind enough to acknowledge the existence of my teeny tiny website. I wish her more success and wish she would showcase her creations in India soon.

Q & A with Aruna Seth

1. Major influences in your life……….Who has been the inspiration for you to enter the shoe world?

Aruna : My father, who has been making shoes for over 40 years, designing and creating beautiful shoes. Designing shoes is in my blood.

2. My signature style is…

Aruna : Sparkly Swarovski, the cerise wedge is the Aruna Seth signature shoe, I hoped to liven up traditional bridal shoes with a bit of glamour

3. Your Shoe creation which is ‘HOT’ right now is…

Aruna : The Aruna Seth crystal butterfly shoes, the perfect height for some glamour, a beautiful crystal butterfly on the peep-toe, padded for extra comfort and available in different colours from nude, ivory, candy pink and fuchsia pink…Katherine Jenkins owns two pairs of the butterfly shoes after being unable to make up her mind on just one shoe.

4. The perfect wedding shoe is…

Aruna : One which compliments your wedding dress perfectly in terms of colour and material…there is no perfect shoe w.r.t to shape & colour, brides can be experimental when it comes to shoes and try a hint of colour.

5. The key to picking the perfect shoes is…

Aruna : Choose what you love, don’t leave the shoe picking until last-minute as shoes are equally as important as the dress, comfort is key, pick the right height for your dress, consider your location as wedges may be best for a garden wedding and be a shoeaholic its your wedding so pick shoes for your hen-party, wedding and honey-moon.

6. Any Wedding tips you can give our readers when it comes to choosing the perfect shoes for the D-day.

Aruna : Always keep in mind that work with your wedding dress to find the perfect shoe.  Use material swatches to compare your dress and shoes.  Pick a shoe colour matching your wedding dress colour; a pristine white dress goes best with white or a pale pearl colour and an off-white gown, goes best with pearl or ivory-coloured bridal shoes.  If your dress is long, shoes with embellishments or spike heels may damage the fabric.  If your dress is short then the shoes are on display, a bit of fancy sparkle on your shoe may be more important.

7. One thing about designing shoes that always makes you smile

Aruna : Supplying bridal shoes for what is meant to be the happiest day of someones life is extremely satisfying.  Many of our brides stay in touch and send us pictures.[Check out the pics on her Facebook page] We’ve even heard of a pair of Aruna Seth bridal shoes upstaging the bride and being photo-graphed more than she was.

Aruna Seth is the first Designer to feature in new ‘Interview with the Designer’ section on Indian Fashion Police. To know more about her collection, recent launch and make purchases please visit her official website www.arunaseth.com or ‘Like’ her Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/ARUNA-SETH.

Karma Suthra – Find of the Month [April 2011]

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on April 1, 2011

‘Find of the Month’ was launched last month and I am happy that my readers have responded so well to this section. Every month I promise to present a new product, designer line or jewellery creation which many of you might not be aware. The only aim of  ‘Find of the Month’ is to get the best and the latest from the Indian Fashion & Beauty Scene………..to tap the budding talent…….. I am sure there are tonnes & tonnes of new designs and products waiting to be discovered by someone………….I had to take an initiative to bring to you the hidden gems of India.

This month of April, ‘Karma Suthra’ jewelery is my ‘Find of the Month’ and will be featured for the entire month under this section. I am constantly in search of something new to display on my website and never ever lose a chance to make it visible to people visiting here. A friend of mine happen to ‘Like’ a jewelery group ‘Karma Suthra’ on the social network ‘Facebook’…………… my curiosity to know more about it’ and it’s creator Divya Thomas grew. What struck me the most was the extensive use of so many beautiful colours in her designs that I got to see while surfing her website. The bright red, blues, greens, yellows fused with ethnic silver, pearls & other materials made the jewellery stand out every bit.

Designer Divya Thomas wearing her own creation

Her jewelery line was contemporary yet have an old worldly charm to it…………….and she makes these creations for real women like you & me who can very much wear her designs plus you don’t have to spend like a celebrity to feel like one. Divya who is originally from Bangalore, has been settled in USA since past 12 years but shuttles between the two countries due to her work. She started ‘Karma Suthra’ in the year 2007, since then her creations have featured in leading magazines like Vogue India, Jade, Savvy, Femina and newspapers like ‘The Hindu’ & DNA India. Her designs are instant sell out the moment she launches them or puts the picture online her website & ‘Karma Suthra’ facebook page. Wear-ability for women of all ages is the forte of  ‘Karma Suthra’. She has the creatively gifted Srila Chatterjee as her ‘Muse’ and has even designed an entire collection for her.. Do I need to give any more introductions??? You can have a look at her creations as a proof………..the designs are very ladylike, very fashion forward and sometimes very ethnically Indian. She has drawn inspiration from nature and made them into a jewelery…………….she absorbs all the beauty around her to make the best pieces one can imagine.

My favourite in Karma Suthra has to be the ‘Mermaid collection’ launched last year…………they are so very exquisite and unique. Have a look at the collection below which consists of Necklaces, earrings and bracelets.  Divya from this year onwards has started launching a new collection every single month which you can see on her official website www.karmasuthra.com

After seeing her alluring designs, I have a wish……………ok make that 2 wishes……………1) A talent like her gets to display Karma Suthra in Indian fashion weeks 2) Her line of creations be available across the major Indian cities……….I am surely gonna visit with my girlfriends the moment it is available in Mumbai.

Creatively gifted………………..absolutely positive on that note but I am very much touched by the fact that this lady still remains down-to-earth in her approach despite riding high on success. I am thankful to Divya for giving me an opportunity to have a short Q & A session with her…………….this is my very first interview with a designer. Since past 1 year I have approached so many designers for an interview, but unfortunately never got a single reply back……….not even a negative one……..sigh.  But Divya was sweet enough to revert back with every answer, I guess that’s the making of a successful entrepreneur.

Q & A with Divya Thomas, Creator of the jewelery line ‘Karma Suthra’

1) What or who has been the inspiration behind your jewelery line???

Divya : In 2006 , my daughter and I were out shopping when we spotted a little bead store called ‘The Flame kissed beads’……….Utterly small and delightfully colourful little shop. They were offering classes and I signed up instantly, not sure why…….. Not once did I notice an artistic flair in me. This was definitely a calling. I made a very beautiful Swarovski necklace that very night after 4 hours of being taught how to string crimp etc.. That was it……. there was NO STOPPING ME. The more I looked around, the more inspired I was. Right from people to trees to animals to objects to just about anything was an added boost to my creative voice.

For instance once I saw a beautiful snake, I picked colours from it and made a necklace[You can check the photos of this creation on her Facebook page]. It was sold instantly. My pieces are a reflection of my moods.

2.You have created jewelery with so many different materials like wood, silver, coral, semi-precious stones, beads, pearls but which of these beautiful little things makes your imagination run wild?

Divya : This is one area where i completely disagree with discipline. There are no set rules when it comes to making or wearing jewelry. I thrive on anything organic. Love sandalwood, smells good and looks great.  Rudraksh combined with turquoise,  Snake vertebra with pearls & emeralds , experimenting with coffee beans…………..there are infinite possibilities.. Giving the unimaginable a chance to stand out , scream for attention and look lovely……….that  is my thing.

3. Which has been your most popular collection till date??

Divya : My fall collection was brilliant. Made some statement pieces that went to VOGUE. Pieces from TILI collection is also very special. Also my Mermaid collection.  So far so good. Amen.

4.You have already down shows in U.S.A and in Bengaluru. Any plans of participating in  Fashion Weeks held in India???

Divya : I’ve had 2 shows in America, one at the Raintree in Bangalore (fabulous response), one in Cochin at the Avenue Regent which was brilliant and am thinking of having one in either Bombay or Bangalore end of the year. Will keep you posted. Fashion week definitely a thought, the only glitch is that i am overseas, and will have to co-ordinate it accordingly.

5.  Future plans for you brand ‘Karma Suthra’

Divya : Right now I am going with the flow, I refuse to plan never works for me. I’d love to see my work on some people and that’s what I am working towards.

6. Anyone in particular that you have loved designing for till date???

Divya : Designing for Srila Chatterjee, Executive Director of Highlight films & Founding partner of  ‘Blue Frog’ Club in Mumbai  has been the HIGHLIGHT of my career. She has brought out the best in my work. [Srila Chatterjee who is also a trustee of ‘Akanksha’ – NGO for underprivileged children]

Divya (left) posing with Srila Chatterjee (right) who is wearing on of her creations.

7. Where are your creations currently available in India???
