66th Cannes Film Festival – Closing Ceremony

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 27, 2013

Cannes13-Vidya16 Cannes13-Vidya17

Vidya Balan attended the ‘Zulu’ premiere at the closing ceremony of Cannes in Sabyasachi of course. But the skirt of this anarkali was the disappointment as it looked very wrinkled & lacked the flowy grace. Coupled with the loose hairdo which I am certainly not a fan of……………this look could have been way more better. ūüė¶

Aishwarya attended the Life AIDS Charity ball in a sparkling ‘Roberto Cavalli’ gown…………….after disappointing hairstyles, the loose curl locks looked pretty good on her…………plus the gown itself did not need any accessorizing as it had plenty of shimmer. Wish she would have posed on the red carpet in this very look…………Sigh!

66th Cannes Film Festival – Day 9

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 24, 2013

Aishwarya Rai attended the amFar’s 20th Cinema against Aids Gala at Cannes in a golden Tarun Tahiliani saree. This outfit was a nice change from the earlier choice of outfits & I love the elegance the outfit exuded. The clutch & the jewels complemented the outfit well but not liking the hairdo at all…….a french updo might have worked really well with this look………….the high updo is again very beauty pagent like.

Fashionistas have pleaded Mallika to cover up on the red carpet…………….this year she exactly did that……….maybe a wee bit too much. In a grey ‘Dolce & Gabbana’ lace dress, Mallika did look beautiful but the volume of this outfit failed to make any long lasting impression. Nonetheless I do like her in a much more classy avatar.

66th Cannes Film Festival – Day 8

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 23, 2013

Ameesha Patel decided to show up on the Cannes red carpet for the premiere of ‘All is Lost’ in Manish Malhotra anarkali. I am not gonna complain a wee bit this time since she did look really good in this beautfiul outfit. This is how Ameesha should look on the red carpet anywhere. Love this sophisticated look on her & hope she keeps up with these looks on home turf as well.

Ameesha posed for the photographers at the photocall session in a white-pink Manish Malhotra as well. The hair was tied in an updo, the dress was ideal for daytime wear & the jewellery kept to the minimum. Ameesha has at last done something right…….. ūüôā

Posing along side Ameesha was actress Puja Gupta who was dressed in ‘Gauri-Nainika’ gown….the look needed accessories and a better hairstyle. Seen here are Puja Gupta, Director Susi Ganeshan & Ameesha Patel.

Nandita Das who a part of this year’s jury judging the short films, also arrived in a beautiful purple silk saree. Nandita has kept her look simple with just some traditional Indian jewellery.

A¬†bright yellow churidhar for a sunny day out for photocall was what Nandita opted for. The silk churidhar was combined with a tussar dupatta……..a lady who sticks to her own style sense and keeps it simple can seldom go wrong.

66th Cannes Film Festival – Day 7

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 22, 2013

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan continues her red carpet journey at Cannes as she attended the ‘Cleopatra’ screening. ¬†Aishwarya opted for a Gucci gown in satin blue and looked absolutely different in an updo. Never seen her work this look earlier so a change is always nice…………but have to say that this look felt a bit pagent like……….What say people……you like???

Nimrit Kaur attended the Lunchbox screening at Cannes in Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla saree. The mirror work blouse was combined with a pastel saree for this daytime event. Though not in absolute awe of this look, Nimrit did look pretty.

66th Cannes Film Festival – Day 6

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 21, 2013

Just as we were starting to enjoy the beautiful red carpet looks of Aishwarya, this look came as quite a shocker to me for this diva. Aishwarya walked the red capet for the screening of ‘Blood Ties’……..the heavily embellished ‘Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla’ gown was combined with messed up hairstyle & a big golden clutch. There was absolutely nothing exceptional about this look…………..unfortunately this is one of the worst looks for this year at Cannes. Somehow felt the outfit was too heavy on Aishwarya, wish she would have opted for a much more slimming silhouette.

On the other hand Vidya Balan continued to floor us with her looks at Canneswhere she attended ¬†the premiere for ‘Un Chateau en Italie’……… another ‘Sabyasachi’ creation this time Vidya combined the outfit with pearl strings & pearl-kundan earrings. The make-up was kept minimal which is how it should be during daytime & Vidya had her wicked smile to complete the look……………LOVE!!

Model-Actress Tejaswini Kolhapure was spotted at Cannes where she attended the ‘Bombay Talkies’ screening. Tejaswini wore a Payal Singhal outfit but the disappointment was her hair & make-up which made the look absolutely shabby. With a bit of highlight to the yes & styled hair this look could have been much better.

66th Cannes Film Festival – Day 5

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 20, 2013

The Cannes veteran is back again with style…….Aishwarya Rai Bachchan walked the Cannes red carpet in ‘Elie Saab’ couture gown. As predicted by IFP, ‘Elie Saab’ had to be one of her outfit choices for the event. A slimmer version of Aishwarya has emerged this year and boy she did make a pretty picture in it. Like the outfit but love Aishwarya’s hair & make-up. The look was kept neat & simple, which made it look fabulous.

Sabyasachi was also one of Aishwarya’s pick for this year at Cannes. She wore the lehenga for celebrating ‘100 years of Indian Cinema’ at Cannes……………the hair, the outfit ¬†& the jewels were absolutely flawless. Love this look on Aishwarya……Classic all the way.

Aishwarya also looked stunning in a black & white outfit for the interviews before she headed for the red carpet. Loving her new slender look and IFP can sure say that this yummy mummy is back to rule at Cannes, once again.

Vidya Balan also in Sabyasachi opted for a silk saree for the screening of ‘Bombay Talkies’……..the look was different from her earlier appearance at Cannes & different is what we like. I somehow love the elegant Indian looks that Vidya has donned in the past few days………..a few glitches here & there can be ignored since she emerged to be one of the ‘Best Dressed’ in our Bollywood industry. Kudos to her for not taking the gown route & embracing the saree with such class.

South Star Chiranjeevi, along with his wife, son Ram Charan & Daughter-in-law Upasana graced the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival. Father & son did look dapper in tuxedos at this event.

Actress Nimrit Kaur was also spotted in a ‘Sabyasachi’ creation as she walked the red carpet along with actor Nawazuddin Siddique. All I can say she looked good and designer Sabyasachi had the entire day 5 dedicated to himself….. ūüôā

Mallika Sherawat has polished up her look for this year’s Cannes Film Festival & IFP is more than delighted to see her in couture gowns. She walked the red carpet yesterday in a ‘Dolce & Gabbana’ lace gown………..her hair & make-up were kept simple. I might not be in awe of the gown but Mallika did look pretty in this outfit………What say people???

Also walking the red carpet were the directors of ‘Bombay Talkies’ Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar & Dibanker Banerjee. Anurag & Karan opted for tuxedo whereas Dibanker went the Indian route in a bandhgala jacket. Zoya was seen wearing a white ‘n’ maroon saree with what appeared to be like Parsi ghara motif on it.¬†

Irfan Khan was also present at the screening of ‘Bombay Talkies’ and sure surprised me with his formal look. The only complain that I have is the unshaved look & the drooping neck tie bow. Seems Irfan was in a hurry to reach the red carpet on time … ūüėČ

66th Cannes Film Festival – Day 2

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 17, 2013

After an adventurous Day 1, Indian celebrities brought in Day 2 with a lot of style. But it was Freida Pinto who took the cake on Day 2 with her vintage inspired look. Freida looked absolutely like a Hollywood starlet in this grey gown by ‘Sanchita’ topped with 1920s inspired hairstyle. One of her best looks so far at Cannes for sure.

Sonam Kapoor again surprised people in this voluminous ball gown by Dolce & Gabbana. Love the colour of the outfit plus the fact that Sonam kept the styling simple & let the print do all the talking. Though I am yet to see a look that makes me go ‘WOW’ but this is pleasantly different than her earlier red carpet looks.

The day is never gonna be complete without Vidya Balan’s red carpet appearance………..Ms. Balan who again opted for Sabysachi added alot of jewels by designer ‘Pankaj Surana’. Not a big fan of nathani on Vidya since it seems to be an extra add-on which was unnecessary. The look might have worked better without the nathani as the necklace looked alluring on this silhouette. As for the outfit… complains at all. No one could have made Vidya look so elegant as Sabysachi did.

66th Cannes Film Festival – Day 1

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 16, 2013

66th Cannes Film Festival went on floors with the star studded¬†premi√®re¬†of ‘The Great Gatsby’ where Mr. Amitabh Bachchan walked the red carpet with the cast of the movie.

But I was sorely disappointed to see him in a sequin studded dinner jacket…………truly wish he would have opted for a simpler silhouette than opt for too much of shine.

The photocall session of ‘The Great Gatsby’

Vidya Balan was seen in a Sabyasachi Lehenga on the red carpet of the opening ceremony. The draping of the dupatta definitely spoilt the entire look………..wish the draping was done more neatly……..even better if Vidya would have worn the dupatta on the side & not covering her head. As for the jewels & the outfit I have no complains at all.

The Jury members walk the red carpet at the opening ceremony.

I loved the saree look of Vidya at the photocall of the Jury at Cannes. The look was by Sabyasachi & jewels by Amrapali but love the sophistication it had. Wish Vidya would have worn this look to the red carpet………….sigh.

Freida Pinto walked the red carpet in a sorbet pink colour Gucci gown………… for her petite frame I found the gown a bit too overwhelming plus the hairdo did not do any good to her look. Freida would have rocked the red carpet if she would have left her hair open and shortened the length of the gown a wee bit.

Sonam Kapoor wore ‘Anamika Khanna’ & a nathani by ‘Sunita Kapoor’………..the lace saree was combined with a ¬†beaded jacket. The look had a very international feel to it but I thought the nathani made the look ‘too desi’. A pair of studd earrings might have worked better. But we do know that we can only expect something new from Sonam every time she walks the red carpet.¬†

Also spotted were Sonam & Freida together before walking the red carpet. The two beauty ambassador of ¬†L’oreal did look fashionable. Sonam is wearing a saree by¬†Huemn and earrings by Suhani Pittie.

Mallika Sherawat in a golden colour gown & looking all polished was a shock to me since she did look pretty. Though not a fan of the gown but Mallika’s hair & make-up plus the way this entire look was put together was worth a note. Hope to see a classy Mallika emerge at future sightings on the red carpet.

Vidya Balan arrives like a ‘Royal’ at Cannes

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 15, 2013

The Cannes madness begins with actress Vidya Balan arriving at the venue in true Indian style. Vidya wore a red ‘Sabyasachi’ Lehenga which had detailing limited to the hemlines …… she paired the look with a matching potli bag. The earrings are from ‘Amrapali’ & Vidya kept her hair/make-up minimal.

IFP was sure that Vidya who is a Sabyasachi & Amrapali loyalist could never go wrong with their designs. Vidya has been invited to this year’s Cannes Film Festival as one of the Jury member. Waiting & wanting to see more of her red carpet looks. The start is stunning and I truly hope that her Cannes journey leaves a beautiful red carpet memory etched into our minds.

Recollecting the red carpet looks from Cannes

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on May 12, 2013

Cannes Film Festival is a big event for our desi celebrities to walk the international red carpet dressed in the finest by India’s leading designers. We have very interesting list of Celebs who will walk the red carpet this year – The Bachchans, Freida Pinto, Sonam Kapoor, Vidya Balan and many more. IFP takes you through the years to list down some of the best & the forgettable red carpet looks of Indian Celebrities that we have witnessed in the past few years.

Best Looks at Cannes

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is a veteran at Cannes and also one of the celebrities to give the best red carpet looks over the years. But her best till date is the golden-green ‘Sabyasachi’ saree which she wore for the preview of ‘Raavan’ at Cannes [above] in the year 2010. ¬†The beautiful detailling on the saree combined with emerald green blouse, sleek parted hairdo and minimal jewellery scored Aishwarya the best red carpet look ever. It was very Indian and simply fabulous.

Other red carpet looks include Aishwarya Rai in Elie Saab at Cannes 2011. The pastel colour reflected beautifully on her polished skin while the peplum detail at the waist helped her to conceal her baby bump……… move for the red carpet.

Her other previous favourite looks include the black gown in the year 2005 & a blue gown which had a dazzling snake neck-piece in the year 2007. Hope her look this year tops all her previous looks.

Arjun Rampal & wife Meher Jessia were the best dressed couple at Cannes last year when Arjun opted for a Jodhpuri jacket paired with Jodhpuri pants by designer Rohit Bal………….. plus add a moustache for that Indian touch & we were floored. Wife Meher complemented his look in her yellow gown by designer Tarun Tahiliani. Kudos to them for picking this very contemporary Indian outfits for the international red carpet.

Sonam Kapoor keeps us eagerly awaiting for her walk down the red carpet at Cannes but her very first appearance at this event was by the far the most memorable one too. Sonam opted for a beautiful ‘Jean Paul Gaultier’ gown and Amrapali jewels that left an impression on our minds. She brought a lot of fun & freshness to the red carpet……….we love her for the fact that she isn’t afraid of taking fashion risks.

Sharmila Tagore stood her own in her choice of sarees when she was one of the Jury member at Cannes 2009. In a sea of gowns & dresses, Sharmila choose pastel colour sarees devoid of heavy detailing and complemented each of her looks with her collection of vintage Indian jewels. By far one of the more elegant looks as Sharmila brought her touch of royalty on the red carpet.

Forgettable looks at Cannes

One of Aishwarya’s early look were unfortunately the disastrous ones too………she was styled by Neeta Lulla for the event that gave us red carpet shock which we are yet to get over with. Seen above is Aishwarya in a green saree, beaded blouse & hairstyle by your enemy……. we really wish to forget this look from the history of Cannes.

Sonam Kapoor though did not look that bad, she failed to create an impression in this gown as well. Sonam is seen here wearing ‘Alexander McQueen’ gown at last years Cannes Film Festival. She did not take any fashion risk her and played safe with the hair, the make-up & the outfit of course. A young girl like Sonam definitely needed to be more adventurous.

Deepika Padukone’s first outing at Cannes in Rohit Bal did not make head turns……………..the reason was so many celebrities before Deepika had already posed in a saree plus there was nothing extraordinary in her look that would have made up sit up & take notice. Wish she would have worn a gown instead and gone wild with her make-up back then……… is hoping that she will not fail us the next time.

Mallika Sherawat has to the ‘Queen of¬†Disaster’¬†when it comes to dressing up for the red carpet at Cannes. Mallika got the outfit from ‘Dolce & Gabbana’, told her hairstylist to mess up her hair & wore high ankle heels to take her fashion revenge from people who love to write about her style.¬†What I fail to understand is that why did she make such a style mess on the international red carpet, instead could have tried on the desi red carpet & spared us this fashion moment.

Know Your Saree – Paithani

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on April 11, 2013

Paithani collage

After exploring the Kanjeevarem from South India to the Chanderi saree from Madhya Pradesh, IFP takes you to Maharashtra where the beautiful ‘Paithani’ saree came into¬†existence. Paithani silk originated from a town named ‘Paithan’ in Aurangabad district in Maharashtra. This saree is a rich heritage that the state of Maharashtra has to offer to people all over the world. Paithani sarees are worn by women in Maharashtra during auspicious occasions like marriages and other important family celebrations. The art of weaving this royal silk has been passed on to generations since the Maratha Empire Era……..despite many centuries have passed, this saree is one of the best ever made in India.

Available in silk, Paithani sarees have a heavy zari border & pallu woven out of golden threads. Motifs of peacock, parrot and ¬†lotus top the list of the zari designs on Paithani sarees. Earlier the zari borders were woven out of pure gold threads mixed with copper but currently ¬†silver is used as the base for the gold coated threads. Traditional colours preferred would be yellow, green, purple, magenta, red……….the brighter the shade, the better it looks. Sometimes two different shades of silk threads are used while weaving to get a¬†kaleidoscopic effect of the saree. Each Paithani saree might take upto 18 to 24 months time in weaving…….that also depends on the intricacy of the designs.¬†

This saree has been portrayed very beautifully in some of Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings in which he has beautifully depicted a Maharashtrian lady adorned with jewellery & a ‘Paithani’ saree.

This age old silk has found admiration from the celebrity world in abundance. Most recently Genelia D’souza wore a Paithani saree in red ¬†for her wedding to Riteish Deshmukh while other well known faces like Rani Mukherjee, Vidya Balan, Kirron Kher, Mahima Chaudhary & Maria Goretti have worn it at red carpet events.¬†

Red Carpet at TOIFA 2013

Posted by Indian Fashion Police on April 7, 2013

Times of India Film Awards or better known as TOIFA was held this weekend in Vancouver, Canada. IFP gets you a glimpse at the red carpet of TOIFA and how our stars fared on it.

Abhishek & Aishwarya pose on the red carpet at TOIFA complimenting each other’s style in Indian wear. Aishwarya was dressed in a green anarkali by ‘Sabyasachi’ while Abhishek was spotted in a bandhgala. As a couple they looked nice but I still¬†believe¬†this look would have been much more glamorous.

Nargis Fakhri dressed in a glittery ‘Komal Sood’ gown posed in style. On someone else the gown would have been a total wash-out but Nargis looked ‘Hot’…………..especially the¬†fuchsia¬†pink lips.

Priyanka Chopra dazzled in a black & golden ‘Arpan Vohra’ outfit at TOIFA………..this one is definitely one of her best red carpet looks. The dress is sexy, her side swept hairstyle is fashionable and the make-up is beautiful. Wish Priyanka would continue these amazing red carpet appearances in future too.

Neha Dhupia knows how to work a ‘Sabyasachi’ outfit. IFP loves her military inspired look which was definitely a tough one to carry but Neha pulled this look off with sheer elegance. The pulled back hair, flawless make-up and minimal accessories…….. ūüôā ūüôā

TOIFA celbration

Ileana D’cruz shares a joke with Prabhudeva on the red carpet………here I actually felt that Prabhudeva looked way better than Ileana who is usually dressed perfect. Maybe this was her day off………………not liking the gown or styling of this look. ūüė¶

TOIFA celbration

Ranbir Kapoor has finally heard IFP’s plead to woo us on the red carpet…………….the man looked dapper in a three piece suit and trimmed stubble. This is definitely how we want a star to be seen on the red carpet. IFP has got at least this wish fulfilled………sigh!!

Shahrukh & Gauri Khan wanted to paint the town red………..well at least their appearance did feel like that. Shahrukh finally opted for some colour by wearing a maroon dinner jacket while Gauri wore a ‘Tarun Tahiliani’ saree. I do like ¬†Gauri’s hairstyle which is a refreshing change & it works with this outfit.

Aditi Rao Hydari in a ‘Gauri & Nainika’ gown could have been a match made in fashion heaven…………..unfortunately the reverse happened. I cannot pin point if it was the shiny fabric or the colour that did this look in……..wish the gown would have been in¬†fuchsia colour. Maybe it would have worked……………at least for now this look spelt¬†disaster.

Anushka Sharma wore a suit again on the red carpet…………not that IFP has any complains since she looked so good with those hair bangs & red lips. Anushka was the ‘Host’ for the evening along with Ranbir Kapoor so I think they had a dress code to follow for this event……….but a fabulous girl like her deserves to be seen in couture gowns & Indian-wear………there is always a next time.
